Chapter 19 #3

You are wearing me, the voice murmured. You breathe because I learned how to stop dying.

My stomach lurched.

I shook my head, harder now, as if I could dislodge her with the motion alone. The firelight jumped and shuddered at the edge of my vision, shadows stretching wrong along the stone. For a terrifying second, I couldn’t feel my feet. Or the ground. Or the line between my skin and the air around it.

“Stop,” I murmured, the word tearing out of me thin and desperate. “Please. Just—stop.”

You begged once before, Aeliana whispered, softer now, almost tender. Do you remember? In the crypt. When you thought I was already gone. I’ll never leave you again, Elara.

My breath stuttered violently.

Rhydian’s hand came up to my face, firm and warm, fingers bracketing my jaw, forcing my eyes to his. The echoes shifted immediately, his presence vibrating through me in a way that cut through the cold like a blade through fog.

“Elara,” he said again. “Stay here. With me.”

I clung to his voice like it was a rope thrown into deep water.

We will stay with the Warden Lord.

A shudder ran through me, grief and terror twisting together until I couldn’t tell where one ended and the other began. I pressed my forehead into Rhydian’s chest, breathing him in, heat and leather and something steady that the cold could not imitate.

“She’s so strong,” I said hoarsely.

Rhydian gathered me against him, one arm banded around my shoulders, his palm settling at the back of my neck in a quiet, grounding hold.

The cold lingered at the edges of my thoughts, watching.

Waiting.

And I knew, with a sinking certainty that made my bones ache, that this was only the beginning.

He kept me anchored against him, but his hand slid from the back of my neck to the side of my jaw, tilting my face up.

I felt his echoweaving shift before he spoke again, a subtle pressure in the air, not sound, not touch, but something attentive and deliberate, as if the world itself had leaned in to listen.

“Look at me,” he said softly.

I did.

Everything else fell away. The fire cracked somewhere behind us, distant and irrelevant.

The Shadowlands blurred into shadow and stone and breath.

His eyes held mine, dark and intent, not cold, not guarded, but stripped down to something raw and unwavering.

There was fear there. Relief. Want. All of it contained by discipline that was finally, dangerously fraying.

His thumb brushed beneath my eye, slow, reverent, catching a tear I hadn’t felt fall.

The contact sent a shiver through me that had nothing to do with cold.

His echoweaving answered it immediately, the air tightening just enough to steady me, to pull my racing thoughts back into alignment with my body.

“You are here,” he said, voice low, resonant, the words settling into me like a command the world itself had agreed to honor. “With me. Not Aeliana. You.”

The whisper inside me recoiled with displeasure, like something deprived of purchase. I felt it pull back, retreating into a corner of my mind where it could not reach him, where it could not drown me.

I leaned into his touch without thinking, my forehead brushing his, my breath catching as his presence closed around me.

His echoweaving deepened then, not constricting, not binding, but enclosing, as though he had tuned the space around us to the rhythm of my breathing, to the frantic thud of my heart.

I felt seen in a way that made my chest ache.

He kissed me.

Not frantic.

Not hesitant.

It was a kiss shaped by everything we had not said.

By nights spent apart and days spent believing the other lost. By fear held too tightly for too long finally spilling into something fierce and undeniable.

His mouth moved against mine with intention, grounding and claiming at once, as though he were reminding me of the shape of myself, of the fact that I still existed in my body and not just in grief or magic or fracture.

Heat spread through me in slow, dizzying waves, chasing away the cold that had lived in my bones since Aeliana’s posession. I tasted smoke and warmth and him, and it was too much and not nearly enough all at once.

I kissed him back just as fiercely, my hands fisting in his cloak, pulling him closer until there was no room left for doubt or fear or anything that might tear me apart again.

My breath broke against his mouth, a soft, involuntary sound that made his grip tighten, his echoweaving pulse in response, like the world itself had exhaled.

For a moment, there was nothing else.

No kingdoms.

No dragons.

No ghosts.

Just his mouth, his hands, the steady, living presence of him holding me together without asking for anything in return.

And for the first time since the funeral, since the mountain, since the whisper had begun to press and pull and haunt me from the inside—the voice went silent. Not defeated. Not gone.

But quiet.

And I clung to him like I knew exactly why. I pressed my forehead to his, trembling. “Stay,” I whispered.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said.

And for now, I believed him.
