Chapter 21
ELARA
Night settled into the cave like a lid being shut. No sunset, no warning. Just light thinning until the world went quiet.
Rhydian cleared the entrance and built a small fire between blackened rocks, shielding the flame with his body until it finally took. It burned, stubborn and low.
I sat across from him with my knees to my chest, watching it like it might die the second I blinked.
The Shadowlands pressed close at night. The silence deepened, thick enough to feel like weight on my shoulders. No insects. No distant animals. No echo when the wind moved. Even our breaths felt swallowed as soon as they left us.
Aeliana was quiet.
Not gone. Never gone.
But distant in a way that felt… merciful. Like a storm banked far enough away that I could finally unclench my jaw.
Rhydian finished securing the fire and sat beside me, close enough that our shoulders nearly touched. He did not crowd me. He did not speak. He simply occupied the space like he was guarding it, like the night itself might try to take something from me if he looked away.
My hands were shaking again. I hadn’t noticed until he did.
His gaze dropped to them, and something in his expression tightened. He reached out slowly, deliberately, like a man approaching something skittish.
“May I?” he asked.
The question shouldn’t have undone me.
It did.
I nodded, the motion small, and he took my hands in his, cupping them gently, warming my fingers between his palms. His touch was careful in a way that made my throat ache. Not possessive. Not demanding. Like he was afraid pressure alone might shatter me.
I exhaled, long and unsteady.
“I’m tired,” I said.
He looked up at me, eyes dark in the firelight. “You should sleep.”
I shook my head. “Not that kind of tired.”
The words hung between us, fragile and exposed.
“I’m tired of running,” I continued, my voice roughening. “Tired of surviving things I never asked for.”
Rhydian didn’t interrupt. His thumbs brushed slow grounding circles over my knuckles, his attention unwavering.
“I don’t know how to be anything else anymore,” I whispered. “I don’t remember what it feels like to just… exist.”
The fire dipped lower, shadows climbing the rocks around us, and Rhydian shifted closer, just enough that his knee brushed mine. The contact sent a quiet shudder through me.
“Elara,” he said, and the way he said my name was different than before. It was soft in a way that made my chest tighten painfully. “You don’t have to survive tonight.”
Something in me broke open at that.
Rhydian didn’t speak at first.
He was close enough that I could feel the heat of him, close enough that my body reacted. His presence pressed in like gravity, quiet and inescapable. When his hand finally lifted, it hovered at my waist, uncertain, as if he were asking permission without words.
“Tell me if this is too much,” he whispered.
It wasn’t a challenge. It wasn’t seduction.
It was restraint.
I shook my head, breath already uneven. “I don’t want too much,” I said. “I just want… to feel normal for a moment.”
His fingers brushed my side. The touch grounded me instantly. Warm. Solid. Real. I succumbed to the impulse before I could stop myself, my forehead resting against his chest, my breath ghosting over the worn leather of his armor.
Rhydian exhaled slowly, like he’d been holding that breath for days.
Then his magic stirred.
It moved through the cave the way sound moved through bone, low and careful, a pulse beneath the stone.
The air didn’t change, but the silence did.
His echoweaving slid outward in soft, invisible threads, touching the walls, the ceiling, the narrow mouth of the cave like a hand checking locks in the dark.
He leaned closer to the fire and whispered, barely audible, as if the rock might carry it away.
“You’re safe with me, Elara.”
A low hum unfurled in the air between us, subtle enough that I almost missed it at first. It wasn’t sound so much as vibration, a gentle resonance that settled into my skin like a memory.
It brushed along my shoulders, down my arms, over the curve of my spine, easing tension I hadn’t realized I was carrying.
My eyes slid closed.
“There,” he whispered. “You feel the truth in my words, don’t you?”
The hum deepened, warming, wrapping around me like an invisible hand. It didn’t command. It didn’t take. It followed my breath, rising and falling with it, syncing itself to my pulse until I couldn’t tell where my body ended and his magic began.
My fingers curled into his shirt without permission.
Rhydian stilled, just for a moment, like he was recalibrating, then his hand came up to cradle the back of my neck, firm and steady. His thumb brushed beneath my ear, the touch sending a shiver straight through me.
“You feel that?” he asked quietly. “That’s me holding you together.”
I nodded, throat too tight to speak.
When he kissed me, it was slow. Unhurried. His mouth moved against mine like he was memorizing the shape of me, like he wanted this moment etched into him.
The hum followed us as we sank down together, the fire dancing softly nearby, sparks lifting and dying in the dead air above us. The Shadowlands watched without judgment. No birds. No wind. Just the quiet thrum of Rhydian’s magic winding through the dark like a living thing.
He laid on top of me as if I were something precious and breakable, his weight braced over me, careful not to crush, careful not to rush.
The fur beneath my shoulders was cold at first, shocking in contrast to the heat of him, but his magic followed immediately, blooming outward, softening the edges of the world.
And then he leaned in, lips brushing my ear, and his voice did something I felt more than heard.
It wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be.
His echoweaving carried every word like a slow stroke across my skin, the sound wrapping around my throat, my ribs, my hips, as if he could touch me with language alone.
“Breathe,” he murmured.
The word wasn’t an order. It was an anchor.
His mouth pressed to my jaw. Another kiss, softer. Patient. Like he was proving something. Like he was reminding me I didn’t have to brace for impact.
“You’re safe,” he whispered, and the magic made it feel true.
My hands slid up his shoulders, found the heat trapped beneath his layers, the hard lines of him and the quiet restraint behind them. He shuddered once, like my touch went somewhere it shouldn’t have.
Rhydian’s mouth found mine again. Deeper this time, still controlled, still careful. But the air between us grew thick with it. With want. With the tension he’d been swallowing for too long.
His voice came again, low and roughened. “Tell me what you need.”
I laughed under my breath, bitter and small. “I don’t even know how to ask for things anymore.”
His fingers threaded through mine, pinning my hand gently beside my head, not trapping, not forcing. Just holding. Steady.
“Then I’ll ask for you,” he said. “One piece at a time.” He kissed the corner of my mouth, slow and deliberate. “Here?”
I nodded.
Another kiss, lower, along my throat. “Here.” His voice dropped until it was nothing but a vibration against my skin. “And here.”
The echoweaving followed each word, a soft pulse that made my body feel like it was being unmade and put back together in the right order.
I arched, the movement instinctive and humiliating.
Every touch was a question.
His hand skimmed my side, paused, waited. My breath caught and then released, slow and unguarded, and he took that as permission. His palm settled more firmly against my waist, warm and steady, thumb brushing the bare strip of skin where my gown had shifted.
Every breath he drew against me felt like an answer.
The hum didn’t get louder. It got closer. Like it was threading itself through the space between our bodies until there wasn’t any space left at all. It lived under my skin now, a quiet, insistent vibration in my ribs, my hips, my spine, reminding me I was still here.
Still real.
Still capable of wanting something.
I swallowed, throat tight. “Rhydian…”
His breath skimmed my ear. “Tell me to stop.”
It shouldn’t have been gentle. Nothing about him should have been gentle. Not with the way he looked at me, dark and careful, like I was something he’d been ordered to guard and still couldn’t stop craving.
My hands fisted in the front of his shirt anyway, fingers curling into the heavy fabric. Pulling him closer.
“I didn’t say stop,” I whispered.
Something like relief moved through him. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just a shift, like he’d been holding that breath for days and finally let himself have it.
Then his mouth found my throat.
A slow press of lips beneath my jaw, the rough drag of his exhale against my skin.
My pulse jumped like it recognized him. Like my body had been waiting for this specific kind of touch.
The hum followed, blooming where he kissed, lingering after he moved away, heat trailing in his wake like flame on stone.
I arched into him without thinking, my head tipping back to give him more.
Rhydian made a sound in his chest, low and wrecked, and the vibration answered it, curling around my shoulders like a tether. Sliding down my arms. Rooting me to the ground. Steadying me so completely the noise in my head finally went quiet.
“You feel it,” he murmured, lips brushing my skin again, softer this time. “Every time you breathe, you say yes.”
My breath hitched, and it was true.
I lifted my palm to his cheek, felt the roughness there, the heat in him that never quite left. “Then stop asking me what I want,” I whispered. “You already know.”
His gaze dropped to my mouth.
The hum trembled, suddenly alive with anticipation.
And when he leaned in, it wasn’t desperation.
It was devotion.
His hand slid from my waist to the back of my neck, steadying my head.
Like I was precious.
Like I was his.
I kissed him back like I believed I deserved to be wanted.
His hands moved like prayer.
Not searching. Not taking.
Just learning.
