ASYLUM

We stood on the cemetery's edge, hidden in the trees, watching Sirena dance with the watchers.

They didn’t know we were there. That we were always there.

I smiled as I took in the scene of them dancing and kissing. If I didn’t know better, I’d think it was a sane group of people, not a clutch of killers.

“She looks happy,” Mirage’s voice broke the silence.

“Mm, she does,” I murmured. “I’m glad. She deserves it after everything we did.”

“You did.”

“You helped.”

“Did I? I’m pretty sure you were the one with the shovel,” Mirage said softly.

“You were the one who told me to put her in the box,” I replied.

I watched as Shadow lifted Sirena. She wrapped her legs around his waist, and he spun her, her laughter filling the air.

“I miss her laughter,” Mirage said.

“We will hear it again soon.”

“I hope so. How will we do this?”

I cocked my head to the left, listening to the soft voices filtering through my head.

“Mm, perseverance. It’s what’s gotten us this far. It’s our turn now. We must come clean on all our dirty deeds. Redemption blooms where truth is sown. A quiet seed in hearts alone. Confess the dark, release the lie. And peace will rise where secrets die.”

“Are you afraid?” Mirage asked softly.

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

“Then let me handle it. I’ll bring us home.”

I pulled the rabbit mask over my face, backed away from the edge of the cemetery, and moved deeper into the woods.

We had many secrets.

After all, I am he, he is me, and we are we.

And we were ready to tear this fucking world apart.
