Chapter Twenty-One Pemberley
The Gardiners arrived at Longbourn in the second week of June with the specific warmth of a family who had been through a difficult thing together and had come out the other side and wanted to see the people they had done it for.
Her uncle was everything comfortable. Her aunt was precisely herself, which was the version of herself Elizabeth found most restorative: observant, warm, and in possession of a quality of intelligence that did not perform itself but simply operated, quietly and continuously, in the direction of understanding things accurately.
They had planned, before the crisis, a northern tour.
The tour had been interrupted by the crisis.
Now the crisis was resolved, in the particular kind of resolution that was not a happy ending but was a contained one, and the Gardiners proposed, over dinner on the second evening, to revive the plan.
"We thought Derbyshire," her aunt said. She said it with the light, easy quality she used when she was being deliberate about something and preferred not to have it noticed. "The Peak District in June is very fine, and there are several places of interest in the area I have long wanted to visit."
She looked at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth received the looking with the composure of someone who understood exactly what her aunt was doing and had, over the past three weeks, arrived at the point where she was not going to pretend she didn't.
"I would be very glad of Derbyshire," Elizabeth said.
Her aunt's expression did not change. But something in it settled, the way things settled when they were confirmed.
They went.
The journey north took three days, and they were the good kind of days, the kind where the distance from home produced the specific quality of attention that travel produced in people who found the world genuinely interesting: everything slightly more vivid, the ordinary operations of a different county having the freshness of things not yet made familiar by routine.
Elizabeth attended to all of it with the open, genuine interest she had been trying to clear of its selective quality, the interest that was actually interested rather than the interest that was looking for confirmation.
Derbyshire was different from Hertfordshire in specific ways she had not anticipated.
The landscape had more intention to it: the hills were more deliberate, the valleys more committed, the whole county appearing to have arrived at its current arrangement through processes of some significance, which made sense given what she now knew about the geological arguments for the age of such places.
She had been reading Hutton.
She had purchased it in London, from a different bookseller, and she had read it on the journey north, and she had found it exactly what he had described: satisfying in the way of true things, which was not comfortable but was correct, and correctness had a quality she was developing an increasing appreciation for.
They stopped at an inn near Lambton, which was her aunt's village of origin, and her aunt met old acquaintances with the pleasure of someone who had been gone long enough that the return had warmth in it, and Elizabeth walked the village in the early evening and thought about river valleys.
The following morning her aunt said, over breakfast: "Pemberley is only five miles from here."
Elizabeth looked at her tea.
"It is," she said.
"I have always wished to see the grounds," her aunt said, with the patience of a woman who had said the significant thing and was prepared to let it sit. "It is considered one of the finest estates in the county. We might arrange to see it today, if the family is not at home."
Elizabeth thought about this.
She thought about what seeing Pemberley would mean, and what it would not mean, and what she had been deciding over the past three weeks, and what she had set down, and what she had not yet had occasion to say.
She thought: he may be in residence. It is June. Rosings was April. He may have gone north.
She thought: if he is in residence, and we arrive as tourists, the situation will be exactly what I do not want it to be, which is accidental and ambiguous and without any of the intention that the situation now deserves.
She thought: if he is not in residence, I will see his house and his grounds, and I will know what he is in those too, and that is its own kind of knowing.
She thought: and if he is in residence, and I am here, it will be his choice to come or not come, and his choice will be information, and information has served me poorly when I have been selective about it and well when I have not.
"I would like to see Pemberley," she said.
They arranged the visit through the housekeeper, as tourists arranged such visits, and the carriage went up the drive through grounds that did what grounds should do at their best, which was to belong to the place they were in rather than to impose upon it.
Not grand in the sense of display. Grand in the sense of having been attended to by people who understood what they were responsible for and had discharged the responsibility with care across generations.
The trees were old. The paths were well kept.
The water, when they came to it, was where it should be.
Elizabeth looked at all of it.
She thought about the drainage questions she had asked him in the bookshop, which had been at the time a way of asking something that was easier to ask than what she had actually been thinking about, and she thought about his answers, which had been specific and considered and had the quality of a man who knew his land from the inside.
This was that land.
The house itself was not what she had built in her imagination, and she was honest about what she had built.
She had built something cold and imposing, the architectural expression of a pride that needed witnesses.
What she found was something different: a house that had been lived in, that bore the marks of continuous habitation by people who had loved it, that had a specific quality of having been cared for rather than displayed.
The housekeeper was a woman of sixty who had worked at Pemberley for thirty years and who received their party with the direct warmth of someone whose regard for the house was genuine and who assumed, from long experience, that anyone coming to see it was capable of receiving it correctly.
She spoke of the family with the affection of someone who had known them all. She spoke of old Mr. Darcy with a reverence that was earned rather than performed. She spoke of Miss Darcy with the protective warmth of someone who had watched over her since childhood.
She spoke of the current Mr. Darcy with the specific, unguarded warmth of a woman who did not expect the warmth to be complicated.
"He is the best landlord and the best master," she said, "that ever lived. Not that I know of a better."
Elizabeth received this without the qualification she would have applied to it six months ago.
They were in the gallery when he arrived.
She had been looking at the portraits with the genuine attention she brought to things that interested her, which portraits did, because they were the most specific record of the people a house had contained, more specific than furniture or grounds because they had the dimension of individual faces, and she was looking at a portrait of a man she did not recognise who had Darcy's eyes, which were apparently a family trait of some persistence, when she heard his voice below.
She went still.
Not the stillness of alarm. The stillness of someone who has been carrying a resolution for three weeks and has just been given the occasion.
She heard him speaking to someone downstairs, a question about the horses, and she heard him move toward the staircase, and she thought: I did not plan this, and he did not plan this, and there is no version of this that is convenient, and I am not going to pretend there is.
He came into the gallery.
He stopped.
She did not know, looking at him in the moment he stopped, what she expected to see. She had not prepared an expectation because she had been trying, with the particular effort of the last three weeks, to receive things as they were rather than as she had decided they would be.
What she saw was a man who had arrived in his own gallery and found someone he had not expected to find and had no plan for, and was now doing what he did when he had no plan, which was to be completely himself in the specific way that happened when the situation made performance unavailable.
He looked tired. Not dishevelled. He was always well kept, the same quality of presenting himself without particular thought about the presenting.
But there was something in his face that was different from the Rosings version or the Hertfordshire version, something that was the man without the social context, and she found it, which surprised her, more familiar than those other versions.
"Miss Bennet," he said.
His voice had the quality it had in the bookshop. Not the managed quality. The direct one.
"Mr. Darcy," she said. "I must apologise. We understood you were not in residence. Our party did not mean to intrude upon your household."
"You are not intruding," he said. He said it with the speed of a man who did not want her to leave, and then appeared to hear that speed, and modulated it to something more even. "You are welcome at Pemberley. Always."
The word sat in the air between them.
Always.
She did not know if he had intended the word to carry what it carried. She thought he probably had. She thought he was a man who did not say things accidentally.
She introduced her aunt and uncle, who were examining the portrait of the woman with the landscape behind her and who came forward to be introduced with the easy warmth of people who were excellent company in precisely the situations that required excellent company.
Darcy received the introduction with the real quality, not the performed one, and he spoke to her uncle about the estate with the specificity she had come to recognise, and her uncle responded with the intelligence she had always valued in him, and she stood slightly apart for a moment and watched.
She thought: he is the same in this room as he is in every room. The room is different. The quality is the same.
She thought: I have been looking at the room. I should have been looking at the quality.
He turned to her.
She met his eyes.
The gallery was quiet around them with her aunt and uncle moving gently along the wall of portraits and the afternoon light coming through the tall windows and the house at Pemberley settling into the particular quality it had when the people in it were being themselves.
"Would you care to walk?" he said. "The grounds are very fine at this hour."
She looked at him.
She thought about the letter she had burned. She thought about the doorway. She thought about a long journey north and a morning at an inn near Lambton and three weeks of sitting with herself in the honest, uncomfortable way of someone who was trying to see clearly rather than correctly.
"Yes," she said.
It was the simplest word available and it was the right one, and she said it without qualification and without the social machinery she usually deployed to manage the space between herself and things she was not certain of.
He moved toward the door.
She followed.
