Chapter 4 Is He Flirting with Her

-Drew-

My parents aren’t into capturing the moment.

I know Mom is an artist, but taking photos and being all mushy about the first day of school just isn’t her thing.

At breakfast, Mom and Dad talk with us both, asking what our class schedules look like and other back-to-school-related topics.

Dad and Daniel have been talking about the upcoming football season.

Daniel seems to like our neighbor, Miles, as I’ve learned he is the starting QB for the Rams. My brother is enjoying the fact that he may have secured the start for Friday's game over the previous starter. My brother has always liked being the best, and if I’m being honest, taking down his competition is a challenge Daniel enjoys.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that he is enjoying relaying this to us in great detail.

I almost feel sorry for this Max guy, because I know that if my brother has anything to say about it, Max will not be seeing much game time this season.

The rest of our morning is pretty normal, and Mom and Dad go their separate ways to start their days.

When it's time to leave, Daniel and I head out to the car. Due to all the moves, we only have the two cars. One for our parents and one for us to “carpool” to school. Mom has promised that they are going to start to look for a third car, but I’m not holding my breath.

As we head out the front door, I can see the Campbells next door.

Mrs. Campbell is holding her phone up and saying, “Smile for the camera,” while in the background I can see Annie and her brother holding those first day of school boards wearing matching smiles.

She looks over and sees us, and I can see her say something to her mom.

Annie hands over the sign while picking up her backpack from the stairs.

She starts to make her way down the driveway; while doing so, she gives us a smile and a wave.

This smile is different than the one she had on for her mom’s photos—this one lights up her whole face.

Annie is dressed up today, which makes sense, as it's the first day. In my experience, girls normally pull out their most impressive styles for the occasion. Every time I’ve seen her since we arrived, she’s been in soccer gear or casual summer styles.

Today her hair is down in waves, and replacing the leisurewear is a maroon dress.

It’s hugging her body in all the right places, and it shows off her toned legs to perfection.

Fuck, she is hot. I need to make a move, but I need to make sure she doesn’t have a boyfriend first. I plan to get some details today.

I can bring Annie into my conversations as she is my neighbor and the only person outside of her brother that I know here.

As I was plotting, I must have zoned out because Annie has walked over to me and Daniel.

“You all ready to start school today?” she asks.

I default to my standard smart-ass reply: “Yeah, it’s a new school, new kids, the center of attention kinda day.

” My reply earns me a smile, and I bask in it, but all too quickly Daniel says, “Sure, if you can be my tour guide around school today.” He smiles at her and then winks.

What the actual fuck was that! Is he flirting with her?

I look over at Annie and notice the blush across her cheeks.

Damn it, Daniel needs to stop this shit—it’s annoying me.

We normally don’t go after the same girls.

His type has been the ones that throw themselves at his feet; they leave nothing to the imagination and then he moves on after the easy hookup.

My type is Annie, hot without even trying, with just enough skin to tease, making me want to reveal the rest in private.

Annie’s brother makes his way over, giving us both a nod as he does.

“I swear that she took two hundred photos of me with that sign.” I laugh, and so does Daniel.

We don’t have to worry about that problem…

the opposite, in fact. Before he can say another word, their mom yells from the porch, and before I know it we are lining up to take a picture.

In the shuffle, I end up between Annie and her brother.

I can smell her perfume, something sweet like apples, and my fingers itch to run along her arm right next to me.

I look up at her mom and smile. Mrs. Campbell waves to us after she takes the picture and heads inside the house.

Miles breaks the silence with, “Well, it looks like you two almost lucked out,” and he laughs.

Daniel smiles, “Yeah, almost,” and he gives Annie a little nudge with his elbow.

I nod in agreement, but also I’m annoyed; why the hell is he touching her and flirting AGAIN?

With another nod to us, her brother walks off towards his car.

“Let’s go, Annie, I still have to get Steph on the way to school, and I don’t want to be late.

” Then Annie gives us both a smile and turns to follow his lead.

I can’t help but watch her go. Her backpack is covering most of her back but I can still enjoy the curve of her ass.

She makes a backwards glance, and I think I’ve been caught, but she doesn’t catch me.

She catches Daniel, jerks her head forward, and doesn’t look back.

I look at my brother and think what the fuck before getting myself in the car.
