Chapter Thirty

KATIE

Even though Eric’s been in town for five days, I still find myself looking over my shoulder and waiting for Brittany to appear. Since she’s been MIA, I’m paranoid as hell about what she’s planning next.

My mother picked up Owen every day after school, so I decided to tell her what was going on with Loretta. I spared her the details she didn’t need to know and wanted to make sure she didn’t mention it to Owen or speak to Loretta. I have no doubt she’ll eventually reach out to Mom.

After learning she lied about the money, I sent her calls to voicemail. I’m pissed at myself for believing her.

“Hey, you heading out? I’ll walk with you,” Missy says, poking her head into my office.

I check the clock. “Not yet. I have about ten more minutes of stuff to do.”

“Okay, see ya tomorrow then! Thank God it’ll be Friday!” She releases a whoop-whoop, and I chuckle, waving goodbye.

Once I’ve cleared my inbox and tidied my desk, I grab my bag and lock my office door behind me.

I check my texts and smile when I see Noah’s name on the screen.

Just as I’m about to unlock my car, I notice Loretta standing next to it, waiting for me.

My adrenaline spikes, and I go into overdrive as I check my surroundings.

“Katie.” She wears a defeated expression.

“What’re you doing here?” I ask, squeezing my phone in my palm.

“I wanna see my grandson.”

Arching a brow, I ask, “Which one?”

She narrows her eyes. “What do you mean? The only one I have.”

I scoff, resisting the urge to roll my eyes. “You sure about that?”

“What on God’s green earth are you talkin’ about, Katie?”

“Well, seeing as Anthony is Gabe’s son, I was just wondering which grandson you were talkin’ about.”

“Wha-I have no idea what you’re—”

“Don’t insult me, Loretta,” I interrupt. “I’ve put the pieces together. Brittany was one of Gabe’s mistresses, wasn’t she?”

She inhales a sharp breath as if she’s debating on coming clean or not. If she knows what’s good for her, she better.

“Yes, she was. He got her pregnant, but Elliot and I didn’t know until after Gabe passed.”

“So that’s how you knew her and why you teamed up with her to kill Noah?”

She balks. “What? Of course not.”

“Explain the twenty grand then. And don’t you dare lie to me this time.”

“Katie, let’s sit somewhere and talk about this,” she pleads.

I look around the parking lot. “I’d rather not. There are cameras back here just in case.”

“You really think I’d try to hurt you?”

“I’d say never until someone started coming after Noah, and then you withdrew the same sum of money that Brittany paid a hit man.

It’s not hard to figure out what’s going on.

He’s responsible for Gabe’s death, and you and Brittany aren’t happy he’s back.

He took away your only son and Anthony’s father. ”

“Katie, I really don’t know anything about someone trying to kill Noah, but yes, I did give Brittany that money. Years ago when she gave us proof that Gabe was her son’s father, we paid her to keep quiet and leave town, knowing how it’d look and all.”

“How it’d look?” I raise a brow, knowing it was to save Gabe’s image.

“I knew it’d break your heart even more. You didn’t deserve learning the news of that after everything you’d already been through. It’d tarnish your memories of Gabe and would be a constant reminder of what he did to you. Elliot and I thought we were doing what was best for everyone.”

“By ignoring a child who was your blood relative? Of course I would’ve been hurt, but what he’d done couldn’t be changed.”

“Brittany’s extremely unstable and would’ve made your life hell, Katie. I did it for both of us,” she exclaims.

“Seems like she’s dead set on making Noah’s life hell. She’s behind everything, and when I saw you withdraw that money, I thought you could be too.”

“I assure you I only gave her that money so she’d leave town again. She was blackmailing us with rumors and said if we gave her the cash, she’d take Anthony and move away.”

“And you believed her?”

“Well, she did last time, so I was hopeful. When I saw she returned, I reminded her of our deal, and she said she had unfinished business.”

I think back to what Noah told me was said at the deli and what Loretta’s saying seems to match. While I have no reason to believe Loretta since she made up a tall tale previously, Belinda heard this exact conversation, so I know she’s telling the truth. “You knew she was coming after him then?”

“At the time, I didn’t realize what she was capable of. It wasn’t until things started happening that I put it together.”

“Noah had to hide for weeks to keep Jerry and Belinda safe,” I nearly shout. “Since no one knew it was her at the time, he couldn’t risk it.”

She pins me with a stare. “I’m a little surprised you’re defending him so much. You sure forgave him quickly. I know Gabe wasn’t perfect, but Noah—”

“I love him,” I blurt, my cheeks heating at the confession I’ve hidden from her for so long. “We’re together.”

“Oh.” She swallows hard. “Can’t say I’m entirely shocked, considering how close you two were before the incident. Does Owen know?”

“Yes. But not about that night. And I’d like it to stay that way,” I clarify. “He’s too young to understand.”

“What’s goin’ to happen if he finds out from someone else?”

“I’ll figure that out when the time comes, but for now, there’s no reason he needs to know. It was a very unfortunate accident.”

Loretta huffs, and though this is a hard topic for her to discuss, she keeps her opinions to herself.

“I would never hurt Owen or put him in harm’s way,” she says softly. “I miss him, Katie. Please let me see him.”

As much as my heart goes out to her, I can’t agree just yet. “I’m sorry, Loretta. Until Brittany is caught, he’s staying close to my mother and me.”

“I love him more than anything. It’s why I wanted Brittany out of town. I don’t want him finding out about his dad’s affair any more than you do.”

“Of course I don’t, but he has a half brother. I can’t keep that from him forever.” As much as I don’t want Brittany near any of us, Anthony’s an innocent child who’s suffering from this too.

“Brittany wants Noah to pay. Gabe promised her this whole fantasy life, and she blames Noah for ripping it away from her. From the sound of it, she’ll stop at nothing to make that happen.”

I scowl at the thought of Gabe promising the world to another woman. “Exactly what did he tell her?”

She lowers her eyes and is reluctant to speak.

“After she told him she was pregnant, he promised to leave you. Gave her this whole speech about being a family and giving her everything she ever wanted. She was sleeping with him, so he probably fed her whatever she wanted to hear, but either way, she believed him. When she provided us with a DNA test that proved Anthony was his, we were adamant about you never knowing. So she blackmailed us to keep her secret.”

Hearing that is a punch to the gut, but I’m not entirely shocked either. If he was capable of cheating on me when I was pregnant, then he was capable of leaving me too. If he would’ve been up front about not being happy in our marriage, the fight that resulted in his death might’ve never happened.

Or rather, I should’ve confronted him months before that and left him. I stayed because I wanted our son to have a family, but that takes a lot more than two people being married.

“And I’m guessing the money ran out pretty quickly, and she knew she could score the cash to help take out Noah if she blackmailed you again.”

“Yes,” she confirms. “That’s my best guess.”

“I wanna believe you had no idea what she had planned, but I have to keep Owen safe. Until she comes out of hiding and can be caught, protecting my son is my priority.”

“I understand that more than you know, Katie. I wanted to protect my son too. His image. His wife and child. I wish I knew why he cheated on you, and I don’t wanna believe he told Brittany those things, but regardless, I love him no matter what, just like you love Owen.

Whether it was a mistake or he really planned to leave, I’m not sure. Just know my intentions were pure.”

“I believe you, Loretta,” I say, meaning every word. She’s been there for me since the moment Owen arrived, and I’d never second-guess her love for him. But since I don’t know what Brittany has planned next and how she involved Loretta, I won’t take any chances.

“Thank you. I understand you have to do what’s best for Owen, but please let me see him soon. We miss him terribly.”

I nod. “I’ll consider it, okay?”

“For what it’s worth, I like seeing you happy. I hope Noah realizes how amazing you are.”

“I appreciate that.” I smile, feeling the weight melt off my shoulders now that it’s no longer a secret. “Owen really likes him too.”

“I’m sure he does. I wish I could forgive and forget like you, but as a mother—”

“You don’t have to explain anything to me,” I interject.

“I can’t imagine that kind of pain. It hurts too much to even think about how I’d cope if I lost Owen.

I’ll never put that kind of pressure on you, and Noah will never push those boundaries either.

But now you know where I stand and that Noah is in our lives now. Permanently.”

“Thanks for telling me. And thank you for taking the time to speak to me. I was going crazy after you stopped answering my calls.”

“I better go and pick up Owen before my mom starts to worry,” I tell her, reaching for my keys.

“Alright, dear. Drive safe. Give him a hug and kiss from me, okay?”

I flash her a small smile. “Will do.”

Loretta walks back to her car, and then I get into mine.

My heart races, and my brain buzzes. I can’t believe that conversation just happened, but I’m relieved as hell.

It’s believable that she’d pay Brittany to get out of town to protect Gabe.

Image is everything to the Reids, especially when it comes to their only son.

The question now remains: where the hell is Brittany and who is she conspiring with?

As soon as I get to my parents', I wrap Owen in a big hug.
