Chapter Twelve
Damon
Sawyer turns toward the living room as I head back to the office. I need to find out more about Adam Epson. This was supposed to be a small job, but the price was too high to just be another killing. The fact that they're so secretive about the client who hired us is setting off alarms in my head. If they’re willing to pay this much then they must be well known. I got lucky the other day with Tara being here.
T hey only told me the name Tara and that she was
having an affair. They didn’t specify that Epson was the target until later. I thought she was the target at first and they explained that she was going to be disappearing soon. I needed to be hired to clean up her other loose ends. I don’t ask questions when it comes to my jobs, but this one was too complex. I followed the instructions, but as soon as this fuck decided to threaten me, I snapped. I don’t like being told what to do in the first place. Being threatened when I know I am fully capable of fucking up whoever is behind that phone, rubs me the wrong way.
Plus, I am curious to see if I could get more money out of this. They fucked up giving me Tara’s name. When she mentioned Robert, we connected the dots. I suppose we would have figured out who she was eventually since Epson called out to her when he came home. People think The Reaper Boys are just some rough guys who don’t care about their reputation and go around killing whoever they want. The one thing they don’t know we have is Sawyer. He is a master behind the computer and can find out anything about anyone .
Sawyer is the main reason we are back here. I thought about letting it go but there was that little voice telling me to push more. Sawyer looked into Tara and the Robert she mentioned. You would never guess that her husband is Robert fucking Hachett. I don’t follow the news or elections. Being the mayor doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it opens you up to other bigwigs. As soon as Sawyer told me that he was the mayor I knew he was the one who set this up, but there is no way he has the balls to threaten me. Now I’m on a mission to find out who the fuck I’ve been talking to about this job.
This Dr. Adam Epson stuck his dick in the wrong pussy this time. Now he is going to pay with his life. I shift some office papers on his desk and try to find out who this man is. Hopefully, Matteo and Ryker are finding out more about Max Penfield because he is the next on the agenda. We normally don’t prolong a job like this because it interferes with our normal work, but I guess this is an exception. Maybe we should split up more often to cover more ground. We could be killing every day like Matteo wants if that’s the case.
“ Find anything?” Sawyer asks from the doorway of the office.
I sigh and shake my head. “Nothing that I already
didn’t know.” Sawyer joins me at the desk and looks at all the certificates and diplomas hanging on the wall.
“This guy is really full of himself.” Sawyer walks the perimeter of the room as I continue to search the desk. I don’t think we are going to find anything of use in this house. The real grabber will be his phone. If Ryker can switch doctors then maybe he can search Epson’s office. “I think we are wasting our time. We have better luck waiting until Ryker’s appointment on Monday,” Sawyer says.
I know he is right, but I hate waiting for shit. We should storm over to his place of work and slit his throat right now. Get it done and over with and we can clean up the affair mess afterward.
“Let’s find out more about Tara before she disappears,” I wiggle my fingers to look dramatic. I don’t know why they would feed me that tiny little detail about her before demanding the job get done. I don’t give a shit if she disappears or not. That little detail does pique my interest. I just hope I don’t go down some stupid fucking rabbit hole that leads to nowhere.
We sneak back out of Epson’s house and back into the car. Sawyer’s phone rings as soon as I pull away. Judging by the blaring music in the background, my guess would be Matteo and Ryker.
“Are they clear for Max?” Sawyer asks me. I nod and continue the drive back to the motel. I contemplate joining the boys for some fun, but we have bigger problems to deal with. I know I shouldn’t be thinking about Sarah, but ever since Sawyer found that Clara girl, it's all that I’ve been thinking about. I’m a dumb son of a bitch if I think this will lead us right to her. I doubt she even remembers me to begin with.
T hat thought is squashed by the other display of
thoughts that drive me to find her. She is mine whether she wants to be or not. I’ll kidnap her and keep her hostage until she realizes that she belongs here with us if that’s what it takes.
