Chapter 29 Saff

Saff
My egg hatches.
I’ve been waiting for this moment for many turns of the suns. Now, he is here, a purple tangle of limbs, pushing through a hardened shell.
My heart blooms.
A puff of smoke comes from a small snout. His eyes go wide. He stumbles back, cracking the last of his shell, breaking it into tiny pieces.
“You have done well.” Orion.
I have no patience for the God any longer. Now that I have my young, I’m done with him.
“Yes.” I know my child is a magnificent creation.
“Youngling, come,” I say the words through our minds. Us dragons have always had the ability to mind speak. We choose to talk to people we find worthy. Dove is the only person I’ve found deserving in this world.
My child, in his gangly, purple glory, trots over to me diligently, side-eyeing Orion. He will recognise him as a being of power. More powerful than us dragons or any other creature in this land. Thus is the way of the Gods.
Turning, I brush past Orion, encouraging my young to follow. He will be unable to use his fire until he is at full maturity. First, he will learn the art of flying. He needs to understand balance and grow strength in his wings.
I have waited centuries for this moment. Once I have fulfilled my promise to Dove, we shall leave this place.
