Chapter thirty-two

It's my job now.

áINE

My breath stills in my chest as my heart starts pounding a mile a minute.

I call Kieran.

He answers on the first ring. "She's safe."

"What plans?" I demand, my throat tight with terror.

"The Hollow Point Kings have a buyer for her."

"Have? As in still have?" I ask, my tone drawing Dagda's attention from the front seat.

He's driving me to work while another SUV with mob soldiers I've never met follow in the SUV behind.

"You don't have to worry about their plans."

"How can I not?"

"Because I'm handling it," he says with the assurance I'm starting to rely on.

"Handling it how?"

"There won't be any Hollow Point Kings left to threaten her when me and my team are done."

Remembering what Mick said about unsanctioned killings, I ask, "Is Mick okay with that?"

I don't want that to matter. I want any and all threats to my daughters gotten rid of.

That doesn't make me bloodthirsty. That makes me a mom.

"I have his and Brogan's approval to remove the threat of the gang trafficking humans in our territory."

Should we be saying this over the phone? Ellie told me our new phones, (yes, I got one too) have encryption even she couldn't crack if she tried. But still. "Okay. Would Sadie be safer at the apartment?"

"I have a four-man team on her out of sight."

So she won't be worried if she notices them. "In addition to her bodyguards?" I press, needing to know, even though my brain says, of course they're extra security.

"Yes."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me. She's my daughter. Protecting her is my job."

If Troy had seen things that way, I would never have been forced to marry Kieran. Is it irrational that part of me is glad I was though?

"Be careful." I pause. "When you're taking care of things. Please."

"You worried about me, baby girl?"

"You're my husband. It's my job," I repeat his words back to him.

"Good to know."
