Epilogue

Victor

After filling the backpack Amara had bought me with my few possessions, I wrote a note to thank her and then walked out of her house.

She wouldn’t be home for many hours, but I wasn’t worried about her coming after me.

If she wanted to find me, she could ask her son to track my aura, but she wouldn’t.

Amara believed in respecting other’s wishes. I expected that if I ever contacted her for help, she’d be quick to respond. That was comforting.

I felt a little bad as I made my way down the busy street. Amara would worry about me, but I needed to do this. After a month with Amara, I was impatient. I understood that she had important lessons to teach me, but I also thought I needed to have experiences on my own.

I picked a direction that put my face to the sun and walked. I kept going until I found the ocean. Pulling off my shoes, I tucked them into my bag and I stepped onto the sand. I made my way to the water, letting the cold waves lap at my feet.

Staring out at the vast water made me feel content.

I turned north and walked. I didn't know where I would stop, but for now I had the ocean at my side. A kind of traveling companion. I was a little scared, but mostly excited.

It was time to begin my life as a human.
