2. Greedy

Chapter 2

Greedy

Pregnant.

Hunter’s pregnant.

Kabir’s got the fucking blood work to prove it. We’ve all got the proof, now that he’s shared it with all our devices.

I blink at the report on my screen, my heart stuck in my throat.

Fucking line sixteen.

I know enough about hCG levels to know what these numbers indicate. If Hunter is pregnant, she’s only five weeks, six at most.

I force my attention up and search for her, desperate to understand what’s going on. Did she know? If so, how could she have kept this from me? Again ?

When I find her sobbing in my father’s arms, shoulders shaking, the truth is plain as day.

Spence’s announcement is news to her.

Which means he and I will be having words—at minimum—as soon as we leave this house.

Pregnant.

Pregnant?

Is it even possible?

Hunter started her period the day before Magnolia took her. If her cycle started just over a week ago, there’s no fucking way she could be pregnant. Right?

Unless, of course, the bleeding was caused by something other than her period.

With a long exhale, I recall all the times we’ve been intimate since then. When she was riding my face and Leev was sucking me off a few days ago, there wasn’t any blood.

Are her periods always that short? Or could the blood have been from implantation?

I’ve only encountered one maternity unit in my pre-med classes thus far, but according to texts, a woman can spot or even bleed for any number of nonemergency reasons.

If that wasn’t her period…

If that was implantation bleeding…

Fuck .

Molars grinding, I do my best to recall each of our encounters over the last several weeks.

None of the timing makes sense.

Though she has been with Kabir.

Levi, too.

I made love to her the night her mother came back to town about a month ago, but I didn’t come inside her. Neither did Levi.

We had intercourse up at the cabin last week, but even if her bleeding wasn’t caused by menstruation, if the number on line sixteen is accurate, that was too recent. She couldn’t have gotten pregnant then.

Pregnant.

A sob snags my attention. My father is still cradling Hunter in his arms.

Hunter is looking at Kabir.

If she’s pregnant, she’s most definitely having another man’s child.

My heart plummets to the floor.

This is our second chance. This is our shot.

She can’t be fucking pregnant.

If she is, we’re about to have a mini–British Invasion on our hands.

Or a little blond-haired, blue-eyed baby Levi.

This can’t be happening.

If anyone was going to get her pregnant, it was supposed to be me .
