Chapter Forty-two
With the shooting rampaging in the distance, Luke didn’t hear exactly what the female voice yelling out to him said. Thinking it might be Lori Jackson, he called to the driver again, his commands meant to be obeyed. “Out of the car, now.”
The man on his knees with his hands behind his head spoke words that chilled his blood. “It’s Honey. Honey Bolder. She said she knows you, and you’ll protect us.”
What the fuck? Honey. Wha…!
Confused as hell, he checked out the prisoner who’d thrown his gun toward Luke and seemed to be honest in his appeal.
“Look man, I’m telling you the truth.” The dude waved one of his hands toward the vehicle. “She just saved your ass, man. It’s Honey.”
“Get up. In front of me.” Luke angled his gun at the car. “Why didn’t she show herself?”
“I don’t know. She was fine when I got out.”
Ahead of Luke, Sage found Honey slowly coming out of her fog. He helped her rise and stood aside to let Luke look himself. “See.”
“Lord Jesus, It’s Honey.” In seconds, she threw herself into his arms and was clinging as tight as humanly possible.
“It’s you, Luke. Naz almost killed you. Oh, my God, I drove into the man on purpose. I’m not sorry. He was going to shoot you.” She pulled back to look at him. “Are you okay?”
With his arms around her, he spoke calmly, soothingly… understanding that her babbling stemmed from shock. “Never mind about me. I’m fine. What in all that’s holy, are you doing here and with this guy?” Luke pointed his gun at Sage, and Honey pushed it away. “He’s my savior. Got me away from that house. Before we could stop him, that killer got into the car with us. Sage and me, we had plans for him to let me go. Then he’s going to Mexico. I promised he could. Luke. I promised.”
Luke’s head swiveled between the two people staring at him and he slowly nodded. “Okay. You do it then. I gotta help the others. Sounds like there’s a shit show happening, and they’re gonna need backup.” He kissed her hard, and then pushed her toward the passenger side.
His demanding stare at Sage spoke volumes. “Get her to my place. She knows where it is.” He passed over the fob from the apartment where she’d stayed before. “You harm one little hair on her head, and nothing will stop me from putting a bullet in you. Comprendes?”
“Si. Comprendido. Gracias.”
Sage got into the driver’s seat, put the vehicle in reverse, and they left the yard. When Honey looked back, she saw Luke check the body for a pulse before running toward the other side of the warehouse where the sounds of war still rang in the night.
