Chapter 39
Chapter Thirty-Nine
S ophie wearily sat down on the bed after returning from the hospital to see her parents. Her mother was going to be kept overnight because her blood pressure was dangerously high and needed to be monitored. Her father refused to leave her side, telling her to go home and get some rest, that she could come in the morning and give him a break.
“You look wiped out.”
The mattress sank next to her as Jody sat down.
Laying her head on his shoulder, she gave a shuddering sigh. “I am. I’ve never been so scared in my life.”
His arm came around her, holding her close. “Let’s take a shower and go to bed.”
She just wanted to crawl in bed and pull the covers over her. However, Jody didn’t give her the option, picking her up and carrying her to the bathroom.
“You bully.”
Jody chuckled and pulled her glasses off. “They’re crooked.”
“He messed them up when he slapped me.”
Jody ran his lips over her bruised cheek. “Does it feel better?”
It kind of did.
Sophie didn’t put up a struggle as he removed her clothes then his before tugging her into the shower.
The warm water soothed her tense muscles as Jody washed them off.
“Are you angry with me?”
“Why would I be angry?” he asked gently.
“I could tell you were hurt by what I said. All I could think was if I did something wrong, he was going to kill you.” Despite how warm the water was, she shivered. “I never believed in soul mates until I was afraid of losing you. I don’t think I could bear being without you.”
“You weren’t going to get rid of me that easily.”
Jody turned the water off, pulling her out of the shower to dry her.
“I don’t want to wait. I want to marry you now.”
“We’ll wait.”
Hurt, she put her glasses back on.
Jody grinned at her. “Oh, we’re going to get married, baby, have no doubt about that fact. But I’m not going to drag you to the courthouse after you just had a terrifying experience. A week should be long enough for Ginny, Alanna, and you to plan the wedding.”
After blow drying his hair, Jody went to call Silas while she did hers. Jody was still in the living room when she lay down. Leaving the light on, she closed her eyes while she waited for him to come to bed.
Half-asleep, she snuggled against him when she felt him slide in bed behind her.
“Did the sheriff get the clock?” she asked drowsily. She had given the restaurant key to the sheriff at the hospital.
“No, it wasn’t there.”
Her eyes flew open in the darkness.
“How is it gone?”
“Greer thinks whoever took it broke into the restaurant’s back door after the man who you met in the parking lot called him.”
“No one saw anyone break in?”
“No, and the clock wasn’t at the house where your parents were kept.”
“So, there was one more person involved who we don’t know who they are?”
“That pretty much sums it up.”
Sophie hesitated to ask the question she wanted the answer to but debated if she really wanted to know.
Jody’s hand slipped around her waist to rub tender circles on her stomach.
“What happened to the man who drove me here?” she asked softly.
“Don’t ask.”
“Okay.” She wasn’t going to argue for an answer she didn’t want to know, anyway.
His hand slipped between her thighs. “Why haven’t you asked me about hearing Silas’ voice at your apartment building?”
“Because I already figured it out.”
“You did?”
Wiggling her hips under his exploring hand, she slid her hand until she found his shaft. “Mmhmm … Silas must have hidden a microphone in my purse.”
Jody laughed. “That’s ridiculous.”
“No more ridiculous than him telepathy-talking to me.”
“He wasn’t talking to you through telepathy.”
“That’s a relief. For a few seconds, I thought I was going crazy.”
“You’re not crazy,” he assured her.
Unable to take his teasing any longer, she released his cock to roll over, then placed a thigh over his hip and buried her hand in his hair.
Before she snagged his cock back into her hand, Jody had taken the option away from her and was thrusting inside of her.
“A little warning would be nice next time,” she moaned as he stroked inside of her.
Jody’s mouth went to her neck, making her melt under his touch. “Why? Your pussy is wet …”
“You can be such a man when you want to be,” she complained without heat.
“Do you want me to stop?”
Her hand went to his ass, pulling him back.
“Silas isn’t the only one in the family who has special gifts.”
“What gifts?” she asked him absently, only half paying attention.
“Matthew can create fire, Isaac can walk in the shadows, Jacob can control water …” Jody punctuated each revelation with a thrust of his cock.
“Sure, and I can make lightning shoot from my fingertips,” she joked, thrusting her hips toward him as her nails bit into his butt cheeks.
“None of us can do that … yet.” He groaned, rolling her over until she was on her back and he could thrust harder.
“What can you do?”
Her muscles tensed as explosions began racking her body as she came.
“I can rock your world.”
