Epilogue #2
A minute turned into ten, which turned into Nix and me showering together, which turned into trading lazy blow jobs, which then turned into us both having to hurry the fuck up to get dressed and into the car.
“Damn,” I mumbled as I drove the car out of our driveway. “We forgot the pancakes. And the chocolate sauce.”
Nix chuckled, his smile brightening the gloomy morning like a ray of sunshine peeking through the cloud-covered sky. “I think we should keep the sauce in our bedroom. Let them wonder what happened to it.”
“Devious, sweetheart. You’re absolutely devious.”
Nix squeezed my thigh. “I’m learning from the best.”
I would’ve liked to give a snarky answer, but I couldn’t come up with one, so I simply enjoyed my mate’s touch, the warmth of his hand seeping through my jeans and into my leg.
Those casual touches, the way he always reached for me just like I always reached for him, were some of my favourite things about being mated.
His touch calmed me, his magic brushing against me instantly relaxing my muscles, no matter how much a long day of dealing with small and big problems had riled me up.
“Oh, did the Council ever follow up with you about Callum’s mysterious disappearance?” Nix asked into the quietness of the cab.
I huffed. “You mean after they initially contacted me about a theft and I ripped them a new one over the phone and received a formal reprimand?”
Nix laughed. “Yes.”
I rolled my eyes. “Once. They felt the need to inform me I’m no longer a suspect and that they’d closed the investigation because of the ‘nature of the stolen goods.’ I asked them if they meant the escape of a horribly abused person.”
“You didn’t.”
My wolf proudly puffed out his chest. “Of course I did.”
If no one ever challenged the status quo, things would never change.
“I didn’t think it was possible, but I love you even more now than I did a second ago.”
My heart skipped a beat, then thundered on. “Want to love me even more?”
Nix furrowed his brow, suspicion marring his smile. “What did you do?”
I huffed. “Why do you think I did something?”
“Because I know you.”
He did.
I set the blinker and turned to the right, onto Main Street.
“I didn’t do anything.” I rolled my eyes. “To be fair, I tried to send a couple of vampires after your former coven, but as it turns out, the trash took itself out.”
Nix whipped his head around, mouth falling open. “You tried to…wait. Vampires exist?”
I laughed. “Apparently so. And apparently, my dad is kinda friends with one? He and my mom met him when they stayed in New Hardenberg. Apparently, the vampire in question owns a bar or a club, or whatever. No idea what my parents wanted in a club, but they met this guy, and he turned out to be the owner and a vampire. Anyway, my dad asked the vamp if he could locate your former coven and uhm… take care of them. Or at least the coven leader. However, it looks like your former coven is in shambles after they were attacked by a wolfpack.”
“No.” Nix’s jaw dropped.
“Yes.”
“Knox’s pack?”
I nodded again, giving him a wide smile.
“About half of the coven died. Knox was taken out in the attack. Unfortunately, it looks like Bear has taken over, but the vampire promised to keep an eye on him and the pack. If they ever try to acquire another mage, we’ll know, and we’ll have a vampire on our side who’s willing to help us get any and all mages out. ”
“Best Valentine’s Day ever,” Nix cheered, his face glowing with happiness. “I have the best mate in the world. Amanda is dead. Knox is dead. I’m free. I have two friends who are mages too. I even accidentally adopted two kids along the way. What more could I want?”
I shrugged. “In-laws who adore you?”
Nix laughed. “I have those too. And a pack that values me.”
Of course they did. Because Nix was amazing and oh so kind. The kids loved him. Whenever one of them fell and scraped their knees, Nix healed them. It didn’t matter that those scrapes would be gone within minutes, he still did it.
He could also make them levitate. Which had quickly turned him into one of the most popular people in the pack. Every kid wanted a chance to fly, as they called it.
“Seems like your life is pretty perfect.”
Nix laughed, the sound so uninhibited and free it made my heart jump.
“Looks like it. And I have you to thank for that.”
“I didn’t do much.” It was all him. His personality, his kindness, his willingness to trust my pack.
“On the contrary. You made this pack the way it is. And it’s special. Everyone can see that. Take Callum, for example; he had no reason to stay, but he chose to.”
I snorted. “Yeah, but I think that has less to do with me and the pack, and more to do with Heath and Angelo.”
Nix furrowed his brow, confusion written all over his face. “What do you mean?”
I waggled my brows. “Let’s just say… things between them might get interesting.”
It took a while until the cloud of confusion lifted, and Nix’s mouth dropped. “Seriously?”
I nodded, the grin on my face growing wider. “One hundred percent.”
“And neither Callum nor Heath ever said a word!” He huffed, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “Seriously? Those three?”
“Those three,” I confirmed.
“Damn,” Nix whispered, a laugh escaping his throat just as I parked the car in front of the packhouse. “I can’t believe I didn’t see that one coming.”
“To be fair, I didn’t either. Not until Heath and Angelo disclosed their…
well, it’s not a relationship yet, I guess.
You know, because they both got promoted and kinda thought that as their Alpha I’d need to know about an office romance or whatever.
I didn’t really understand their reasoning.
It’s easy, you know? Mates trump everything. ”
“I love you and your way of thinking.”
Nix pressed a kiss to my cheek, then hopped out of the car, waving at me to stop staring into space and follow him into the packhouse, but I couldn’t help but watch him for a moment.
The easy way he approached the front door, the smile on his face that never wavered, his shoulders that stayed down, his posture relaxed.
My mate had come so far in the last three months that I couldn’t wait to see what three years might do.
One thing was for sure: I’d be by his side every single day and every step of the way. Always.
The End
