Chapter 13

“I think you’re wrong,” Cyan declared, as she and Steele sat in her vehicle, arguing. “I don’t think we should go back in there at all. Instead we should talk to Terk and ask him if that really is his Beacon.”
“We can, if we can get through to him,” Steele pointed out. “I’m not against that at all. I am, however, uncomfortable leaving somebody caught in there. Whether friend or foe, we don’t want them trapped in there.”
“I don’t care where they want to be,” she muttered, glaring at him.
“I’m sorry. I know he scared you pretty well,” he said.
She groaned. “It’s not even that. It was that laugh. And we can’t forget that you were attacked.”
“I know. I know,” he agreed. “And that is definitely a concern.”
“No, it’s more than a concern,” she argued, staring at him. “You don’t know who this person is or what they are trying to do.”
“No, I don’t. But if somebody is in trouble, I don’t want to leave them out there to suffer on their own. Plus, if they are trying to get at Terk, we can’t leave them there to figure out how to do that.”
She closed her eyes and then nodded. “Fine, I’ll wait here. You can go back in.”
He checked to see if she was serious, and she was. He nodded. “That’s fine. I’ll go then.” He exited her vehicle and headed toward the woods again.
She called out to him in an exasperated tone, “You’re going now?”
He turned back to her, frowning, and asked, “Is there a reason not to?”
“I mean, if someone is trapped and didn’t know how to get out, then why didn’t they come to us?” She stared at him intently. “Why didn’t they come talk to us? They had an opportunity. They had the means. Why did they not come and talk to us?”
“I don’t know. I don’t know anything about any of this,” he admitted, “but I’ll be sure to ask them.” And, with that, he turned and walked back in the direction of the gate. It took her all of five seconds before she bolted behind him.
