Chapter Thirty-One

Stone laughed at the gift Roam and Sprite had just opened at their baby shower. Dex had gotten Roam and Sprite a case of condoms. Sprite had threatened Roam that he better not get her pregnant, at least for two years.

The MC was hosting a joint baby shower because Halligan Nelson and his wife had their daughter a week ago. Halligan and Loni had opened their gifts first and now Roam and Sprite were opening theirs.

His wife was holding Roam and Sprite’s son because Sprite didn’t want a shower before they had the baby.

She wanted it afterward so everyone could meet the baby and know what clothes they might need.

It was the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.

The club had small staffs at the businesses, so everyone who wanted to could attend the shower in the clubhouse.

They decided to completely close the tattoo studio to give them all a break.

Stone was looking forward to sleeping outside on the bed swings and enjoying movie-watching time with his family.

The girls had a list of what they wanted to see.

They were also going to visit the shelter because Brody mentioned the rescue was full with a lot of drop-offs.

He and Naomi had decided it was time the girls had pets.

Regina had just come back from putting the pet that War and Baron had thought would be such a sweet gift into his cage.

The rooster thought it was a dog and wanted to follow Regina around, and if she sat down, it wanted to sit on her lap, rubbing its head against her shoulder.

It also had a time issue, and instead of crowing at five a.m., it crowed in the afternoon.

It was the strangest animal, but Regina loved it.

She’d given up keeping it outside, but she had the cage for it when she wanted him contained so he couldn’t just poop anywhere or bother everyone.

Stone and Naomi had given Roam and Sprite the gift of time as their shower gift: a night of babysitting for all of their kids once a month for six months to give them a break. Sprite had jumped up, hugged Naomi, and told her bless you.

Finn walked into the room, glancing around. He and Ben were on guard duty. Although Finn had been better, there were still issues sometimes with inappropriate pranks. Stone wondered if Finn would ever be a full member.

“Where’s Dex?” Finn asked loudly.

“I’m here,” Dex called back, walking out of the back hallway that went to the guys’ rooms.

“Umm, you have some visitors out front. If it’s okay, I’d like to let them come in,” Finn stammered, looking nervous.

“Prospect, you better not be fucking with me,” Dex warned, narrowing his eyes.

“This isn’t a joke. Please,” Finn insisted.

“Bring them in, Finn,” War interjected.

Finn ran back out, and then he and Ben walked back in, leading a group of kids.

The oldest boy looked to be sixteen or seventeen, Stone thought. He was holding an infant in his arms and had the hand of a small girl. A girl that looked to be his daughters’ age was holding the hands of identical boys that Stone guessed were three.

“Which one of you is Hagen “Dex” Dunn?” the boy demanded, his voice shaking but brave.

Dex walked forward. “I am. Who is asking and why?”

“You’re the father of my little brother, and our mom was killed in a car accident two days ago. She gave us your name and address and told us to find you if something ever happened to her.”

Stone waited to see what Dex would do. This was wild, and it was a crapshoot what Dex would do.

“I have to go pee-pee,” one of the toddlers whimpered.

“Here, let me show you where the restroom is. Anybody else need to go?” Chloe offered, stepping forward to break the tension.

“Me,” the little girl whispered, raising her hand.

“You can come too,” Chloe smiled reassuringly, holding out her hand and leading the kids away.

Dex stared at the boy, not saying anything. It was killing Stone to have those kids standing there waiting for something to happen. Stone stood up and walked over to where they were.

“Hey, why don’t you all come on in and sit down. Where did you drive from?” Stone prodded gently as he led them to a table and chairs. Naomi had grabbed food and drinks for them while he was talking to them.

“Las Vegas,” the boy said.

Stone looked over at Dex. The Nelsons had come to the baby shower, and Halligan Nelson started chuckling.

“Oh, this is priceless,” he crowed.

Stone bit his lip, trying to hold in his laughter because Dex had teased Halligan so much over Halligan’s little present from his Vegas trip—the trip they’d taken together.

At least, it would never be boring in Bluff Creek.
