Chapter Fifty-Eight

Xane

Trick and Scarlett walk away, and Kian starts to walk after them, clearly under the influence of the Omega’s perfume. I put my arm out before he can pass, and he stops when it bumps against his chest.

“Didn’t you hear me when I said we have enough problems?”

He blinks, and it takes a second, but the haze is gone from his eyes when he looks at me.

Yeah, he’s definitely feeling that perfume of hers.

“Hm? Oh. Right,” Kian murmurs, nodding slowly. “Sorry. It’s kinda hard to ignore … well, you know. You do know, right? You’re feeling it too?”

“She’s an Omega, and she’s perfuming. Any Alpha would notice.”

“Well, yeah, but it’s different with her. She’s …”

“We don’t know that.”

“I do,” he argues. “And I thought you did, too. What changed?”

“What didn’t change? She’s not who we thought she was.”

He frowns. “I thought you didn’t like that she was a reporter, or whatever? Now we know she’s not. She’s a musician. She’s into the same things we are. And she switched places with her twin for a good reason. If it’s not fate that made this happen, then I don’t know what to call it.”

He might have a point, but it doesn’t matter.

It’s not an excuse to make another bad decision.

After everything else that’s gone wrong, I can’t afford to make another mistake.

We’re in enough trouble right now.

As the pack’s lead Alpha, I’m the one who needs to get us out of this mess.

I can’t let myself get caught up in anyone else’s crazy schemes.

“We have a rough few days ahead,” I start, before sighing. I know he doesn’t care. He’s done nothing but think about meeting this woman for God only knows how long. “We don’t have time to start anything with her. We need to get to the resort before we run out of water. That’s the priority.”

He shakes his head. “Seriously?”

“I don’t want anyone getting sick. We’re in the middle of nowhere out here, if you hadn’t noticed.”

“We’re only a couple of days walk away from Golden Sands.”

“Four days, maybe three, depending on the terrain in the jungle.”

“I brought more than enough food and water to cover that for all of us.”

“We’ll see about that.”

Kian heads for the steps to the jet.

“I’m gonna grab all the snacks and put them on the tables in there. Maybe you’ll chill out once you can see we’re gonna be fine.”

He disappears into the cabin.

“We’re gonna be fine,” I murmur, trying to make myself believe that.

When I take in a breath, Scarlett’s perfume is still lingering in the air.

It tastes like fruit covered in caramel, sweet but complex.

Seems about right for a woman who has secrets.

When I exhale, the taste doesn’t leave me.

It remains in my mouth, fading slowly.

Something very bad is going to happen.

It’s a deep, dark warning that rises as I fight to ignore that taste.

Getting back to civilisation feels more important than ever.
