Chapter Sixty-Three

Scarlett

Rage is screaming through me as I sit down between Trick and Kian at the campfire .

Xane Orion is a fucking asshole!

I’m so mad that I ever thought he had the sexiest singing voice I’ve ever heard in my life. I’m pissed that I ever wasted a single second fantasising about him.

He’s a massive piece of shit for judging me for something I can’t do anything about.

I’ll never forgive him for that.

Trick puts his arm around me, and I lean against his shoulder.

“You all good?” he asks quietly.

Part of me wants to drag him back to that lake to finish what we started, just so I can come back and show that asshole our mating marks.

I’m not going anywhere. Choke on it, Xane.

But, lucky for both of us, I’m not a big enough bitch to claim a guy for the wrong reasons.

When Trick gives me his mark, it’s gonna be because we’re both ready to make that life-altering decision, not because his stupid lead Alpha made me so angry I wanted to piss him off as badly as I possibly could.

“I’m fine,” I tell him, sitting back up.

His arm falls away, but he gives me a ghost of a smile.

I guess I’m gonna have to try a bit harder to stifle my anger.

I don’t want Trick to think it’s directed at him.

Unfortunately, I can’t think of a way to do that, so I just lean in and kiss his cheek.

Then, I turn back to the fire, and I look at Kian.

He’s already got his gaze on me.

He smiles when we lock eyes.

“So, where are the marshmallows?”

“I’ve got them right here,” he says. “Once the fire’s ready, I’ll pass them out.”

I nod, looking at the embers he’s stoking and knowing it’s gonna be a while.

Food can be a decent distraction, but we won’t be eating straight away.

Great. I’m gonna have to find another way to douse this anger.

“Riley’s not joining us?” I ask.

“Food only slows down his drinking,” Kian answers. “He’ll probably be looking for chips at some point before morning, but right now he couldn’t care less.”

I turn, and I can see they’ve left a lantern where Riley’s still hanging out, probably so we have some idea of where he is now that it’s dark.

“We probably shouldn’t tell him there are snacks in his backpack,” Trick says. “He’ll start eating like a pig once he knows the beer is finished.”

“Yeah, probably,” Kian agrees.

I glance at Xane, but I don’t think he’s paying any attention to the conversation.

He’s facing the sea, staring into the distance.

The fire starts to crackle, and I look down to see flames sparking to life.

Kian smiles proudly as I lift my gaze to his face.

“Won’t be too long until we’re eating toasted marshmallows now.”

“Good,” Trick murmurs. “I’m starting to get hungry.”

Kian frowns at him. “Did you even eat earlier?”

Trick instantly looks guilty. “It was too hot to think about eating. It’s cooler now.”

“You skipped lunch?” I ask, realizing I didn’t notice.

“Yeah, but so did Riley,” he reminds me. “It’s fine. I wasn’t hungry. I am now.”

“Yeah, but this is a dessert, really.”

“Scarlett has a point,” Kian says. “You should go grab a sandwich now.”

Trick sighs as he gets to his feet. “It’s really not that big of a …”

“Don’t worry. I’ll look after our girl when you’re gone,” Kian adds, before grinning at me.

If I thought he might still be hurt after our misunderstanding this morning, I didn’t need to worry.

He’s back to being flirty, with a competitive streak now, I guess.

It feels kinda nice that at least these two like me.

“I don’t need a sandwich,” Trick starts.

I look back at him. “You need to eat. We’ve got a lot of miles to start covering tomorrow.”

He looks from me to Kian and back to me. Sighing, he looks around.

“Okay. Who has a torch, or whatever?”

Xane gets to his feet. “I’ll go with you.”

He has a flashlight in his hand when Trick looks his way.

“Don’t hurry back,” Kian teases.

I can’t see Trick’s face clearly, but it’s obvious he’s annoyed.

“I’ll be right here when you come back,” I promise.

“We won’t be long.”

He hesitates before he starts to follow Xane back to the jet.

I blow out a breath when they’re gone from sight.

“So,” Kian starts.

I look back at him, and he gives me a wry smile.

“So?” I ask, waiting.

He stops stoking the fire, putting down his stick and looking right at me.

“So, what did Xane say to piss you off?”

Yeah, I really don’t do well at hiding how I’m feeling.

I’m just surprised he waited for Xane to be gone to ask.

“You really don’t want to know.”

“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t need to know.”

He moves a bit closer, and I don’t want to lie to him.

I don’t want to lie to any of them. Not now.

Not when they know who I am.

So, I decide to tell him.
