Expat Dies after Eating Poisonous Mushrooms
An American citizen living in the Costa Brava has died after accidentally ingesting poisonous mushrooms. Another man remains in hospital in Girona in critical condition.
The coroner is waiting for toxicology reports, but death cap mushrooms were found growing on the property where the poisoned men were discovered.
A police spokesman says it appears the men picked, cooked, and consumed the mushrooms at the home about six kilometres from Cadaqués.
Mushroom poisonings are more common in Europe than in North America, which may explain the men’s mistake. Death caps bear a striking resemblance to straw mushrooms, used regularly in Asian cooking.
The identity of the men is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
