Chapter 31

Daniel

I wanted to fall asleep with her and stay like that forever, but my phone buzzed.

God, that sound she made when I touched her…

Becca was in danger—I needed to focus on that.

I lifted Lydia and slowly laid her down on the couch, taking the phone to the kitchen.

Jake’s voice boomed into my ear. “How’s Becca?”

“Still sleeping. Lydia passed out right after you left.”

“Shit. Did they hurt her?”

“No, she’s fine. She gets panic attacks. I think she was holding it back until she knew Becca was safe and you two left. She’s sleeping now. What do you got?”

“I’m with Cole. The guy that attacked Lydia bled out. I found him a few blocks away in a parked car. Brought his body to Cole so we could take a closer look, but there was nothing in the car or on the body besides a knife in his pocket. Pretty sure the car was stolen, no IDs anywhere.”

“Fuck, she killed him.”

“Relax, man. I get the impression she won’t give a shit.”

He’s probably right.

“What about the other guy?”

“Cole got him talking. Your girl was right, Becca was targeted. They were hired to hurt her, Danny.”

I leaned on the wall and closed my eyes, trying not to punch something and wake Lydia and Becca up. “Who?”

“Don’t know. Cole’s getting more info. If money was transferred, Terry will track it, and if it was cash, we’ll track their communications.”

“Jake—”

“I know. It’s Becca.”

“I did this.”

“We don’t know that. It might not be connected to our investigation. Don’t think about that shit now.”

“Need me there?”

“No, Cole and I got it. We’ll update Terry when we get anything we can use and crash at your place.”

“Don’t get blood on my couch.”

Jake scoffed. “Yeah, sure.”

I put the phone on the table and looked at Lydia, curled up on her side, facing the couch backrest. I took off my bloodied shirt and got on the couch behind her, not caring that I’d probably fall off.

I was too tired, and I wanted to hold her.

I pulled her close so that her back was against my stomach and her head right under mine, and let myself fall asleep.
