Chapter 55
Lydia
The sound of the front door opening woke me up. My eyes blurred for a moment when I forced them open to look at my phone screen—five a.m.
Daniel was sleeping on his stomach beside me with one arm off the bed and a frown on his face. I kissed his forehead, surprising myself at the gentle gesture, and walked silently out of the room toward the apartment door.
I jumped back and gasped at the sight of Cole standing in the kitchen with blood all over his shirt, arms, and face.
His eyes caught mine, and he smiled. “Little one.”
“Are you injured?”
His smile turned wicked. “Not my blood.”
“I’m guessing you found the guy with the phone.”
Cole grunted. “We had a little chat. Sorry for coming here, but it was closest and I needed to clean up and grab a few hours of shut eye. Jake might drop my stuff off on his way to base in an hour or so.”
His jaw ticked. His body was tense. This giant man was showing all of the signs that would have sent me into defense mode, except I wasn’t scared.
“You’re angry, Cole.”
He grunted again. “We got more bodies to drop.”
I nodded and moved aside so he could walk past me into one of the three guest rooms. I grabbed a change of clothes from Daniel’s closet and used the bathroom in a guest room to shower so I wouldn’t wake him up.
I was sipping on a cup of black coffee, completely zoned out, when a soft knock on the door brought me back to reality.
I opened the door to the building’s old concierge, holding a black duffel bag.
“Good morning, miss. This was left at the front desk by Mr.Callahan.
Jake? I realized I didn’t know his last name, or Cole’s, for that matter.
I thanked him and left the bag on the floor beside Cole’s door before going back to my instant coffee.
My phone buzzed with a message from Kernel. This time it was a normal text message, not sent through his app. He didn’t want the others to see it.
?? I’ll make it right, Angel. I swear.
