Chapter 5 #2

“It was a pleasure meeting you, Naina,” he said, his voice low enough for only her to hear. “I look forward to getting to know you better.”

Naina managed a shy smile, her voice barely above a whisper as she replied, “Likewise, Ruhaan.”

As she watched him leave, she knew with certainty that her life would never be the same. Whatever the future held, Ruhaan Singh had awakened something within her – a passion and a curiosity that she never knew existed. And deep down, she couldn’t wait to explore where this new chapter might lead.

The next month had been a blur of stolen moments and flirtatious text messages from Ruhaan.

Each ping of her phone had sent her heart racing.

Naina had never experienced anything like this before…

the constant anticipation, the butterflies in her stomach, the way her cheeks flushed at the mere thought of him.

He had opened up to her about his past relationships. He had been honest about his two ex-girlfriends, a fact that both impressed and intimidated her. In turn, she had shyly admitted that she had never had a boyfriend before.

The engagement ceremony was an intimate affair, with only close family members in attendance. As Ruhaan slipped the delicate diamond ring onto her finger, their eyes locked, and she knew she had given a piece of her heart to this man already who was now her fiancée.

As the families mingled and celebrated, Suman suddenly appeared at Naina’s side. “Come with me,” she said, tugging on Naina’s arm. “I have a surprise for you.”

Confused but intrigued, Naina allowed her sister to lead her away from the gathering and up the stairs to the terrace. As they emerged into the cool night air, Naina gasped. There, leaning against the railing with a rose in his hand, stood Ruhaan.

Suman grinned, nudging Naina forward. “This was all Ruhaan’s idea,” she explained. “He wanted some alone time with his beautiful fiancée.”

He stepped forward, offering Naina a red rose with a charming smile. “I hope you don’t mind my little scheme,” he said softly.

Suman cleared her throat dramatically. “Well, I’ll leave you two lovebirds alone,” she teased. “But remember, we’re all waiting downstairs, so don’t get too carried away!”

With a wink and a laugh, Suman disappeared back down the stairs, leaving Naina and Ruhaan alone under the starlit sky.

Naina’s heart raced as Ruhaan took her hand, gently pulling her closer. “I’ve been waiting all evening to get you alone,” he murmured, his eyes intense as they gazed into hers.

“Ruhaan,” Naina began, her voice trembling slightly, “I... I never thought everything would happen so quickly. This past month, your messages, they’ve been...”

“Driving you crazy?” Ruhaan finished with a smirk. “That was the idea, my dear Naina.”

He reached up, gently cupping her cheek and leaned in, his lips hovering just inches from hers. “May I kiss my beautiful fiancée?” he asked.

Unable to form words, Naina simply nodded.

As Ruhaan’s lips met hers in a tender, passionate kiss, she felt as though her entire world had shifted on its axis.

In that moment, under the twinkling stars and wrapped in Ruhaan’s strong arms, Naina didn’t know the darkness that awaited to consume her future was just a night away.

Present

Naina was jolted from her reminiscence by a soft knock at her door. “Mom?” Neil’s voice called out.

Quickly composing herself, Naina smoothed her hair and took a deep breath before opening the door. There stood her son, his eyes heavy with sleep but still bright with the energy that seemed to constantly radiate from him.

“Hey, sweetie.” She bent down to kiss his forehead. “Done with your playing quota for the day?”

Neil rubbed his eyes and yawned.

“Now c’mon, go brush your teeth and then straight to bed.”

“Can you read me a story?”

Naina’s heart melted at the request. No matter how complicated her life became, these simple moments with her son always grounded her. “Of course, baby.”

Neil was happy and hurried to the bathroom to brush his teeth. Suddenly the boy’s sharp eyes caught sight of something unusual. “Mom, what happened to that photo frame?” he asked, pointing to the broken frame on Naina’s bedside table.

She felt a pang of guilt at the lie she was about to tell. “Oh, that? It just slipped from my hand and broke. Don’t worry, I’ll fix it soon.”

She quickly placed the photo in her bedside drawer, out of sight, before settling onto the bed with a storybook. Soon, Neil snuggled up next to her, his small body warm against her side.

As Naina began to read, her mind wandered, the words on the page blurring slightly. She blinked hard, trying to focus, but found herself dozing off mid-sentence.

Neil’s giggle brought her back to the present. “Mom, you’re falling asleep,” he said, poking her gently.

She chuckled, ruffling his hair. “Sorry, sweetheart. It’s been a long day.”

“You know, if I had a dad too, then both of you could take turns reading to me at night.”

Her heart constricted at his words. She tried to keep her face neutral, but a small frown escaped. “Neil...”

Seeing her reaction, Neil quickly backtracked, wrapping his arms around her in a tight hug. “I was just saying, Mom. It doesn’t mean I want a dad or anything.”

She knew her son well enough to recognize his attempt at manipulation, but she couldn’t help but smile at his quick thinking. Closing the book and setting it aside, she pulled Neil closer.

“I know, sweetie,” she said softly, running her fingers through his hair. “And you know what? You and I make a pretty great team, just the two of us.”

Neil nodded against her chest, his eyes finally starting to droop. “We’re the best team,” he mumbled sleepily.

She continued to hold him, gently rocking back and forth as she had when he was a baby. Soon his breathing evened out, signaling he had finally drifted off to sleep.

She loved her son more than anything in the world, and their little family of two was perfect in her eyes.

But Neil’s innocent demand had stirred up feelings and memories she’d long tried to suppress.

The weight of single parenthood, the lingering what-ifs, and the face of a man she’d once thought would be by her side through it all, all these thoughts swirled in her mind constantly in loop as she held her sleeping child.

Next Day

Naina descended the stairs, her eyes still heavy with sleep, only to be greeted by a flurry of activity in the living room. Her uncle and aunt were at the center of it all, warmly welcoming a family she didn’t recognize.

As the upcoming event, their 25th marriage anniversary, drew nearer, more guests and relatives had begun to arrive, filling the house with a constant buzz of excitement and chatter.

She stood at the foot of the stairs, momentarily overwhelmed by the scene before her.

She spotted Suman nearby and discreetly elbowed her sister.

“Who are they?” Naina whispered, nodding towards the elderly couple her uncle and aunt were fussing over.

Suman leaned in. “That’s the Chopra family. They’re part of Dad’s social circle now.” She paused, her eyes darting to a young woman standing slightly apart from the others. “And that’s their daughter, Poonam. She’s about your age, quite the looker, isn’t she?”

Naina followed Suman’s gaze, taking in the stylish and admittedly beautiful young woman. Poonam Chopra was standing there with her perfectly manicured hand resting on her hip as she surveyed the room with a slightly bored expression.

“Bit over-pampered, if you ask me,” Suman continued, a hint of judgment in her tone.

“Only child syndrome, I suppose,” Naina teased.

The sisters giggled and stood back, observing the interactions from a distance.

Suman leaned in again. “You know, I heard that Kaushalya aunty has her eye on Poonam for Ruhaan.”

Naina’s heart skipped a beat, a frown creasing her brow. “What do you mean?”

“Oh, you know how she is,” Suman added with a roll of her eyes. “Always plotting and planning. Apparently, she thinks Poonam would make a perfect wife for Ruhaan if things go well.”

Naina’s frown deepened as she scrutinized Poonam more closely. The woman was undeniably attractive, with a poise and sophistication that Naina couldn’t help but envy. She tried to imagine Ruhaan with Poonam, and the thought sent an unexpected pang of jealousy through her chest.

As if summoned by her thoughts, Kaushalya’s voice rose above the general chatter. “Poonam, beta,” she called out, her tone dripping with sweetness, “you look absolutely radiant this morning. That outfit is simply stunning on you.”

Naina recalled how Kaushalya had once praised her in a similar manner. She watched as the old woman fawned over Poonam, asking about her interests and skills with the same scrutiny she had once applied to Naina.

“And do you cook, Poonam?” Kaushalya inquired, her eyes gleaming with interest.

Before Naina could hear Poonam’s response, a movement on the stairs caught her attention. Ruhaan descended, his hair slightly tousled and his t-shirt hastily thrown on. He looked as if he had dressed in a hurry. Her heart raced at the sight of him.

Their eyes met across the room, and suddenly the chaos around them seemed to fade away. Memories of their kiss from the previous night flooded her mind, causing a blush to creep up her neck. Even Ruhaan’s gaze was intense, focused solely on her as if she were the only person in the room.

He began making his way towards her, when Kaushalya’s voice cut through the air once again. “Ruhaan! Come here, beta. There’s someone I want you to meet.”

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, but he didn’t break his stride. As he approached Naina, he slowed down, pretending to adjust his shoe. Kneeling beside her, he whispered urgently, “I need to talk to you.”

Naina felt a shiver run down her spine at his proximity, but the sight of Kaushalya’s eager face as she watched Poonam, hardened something inside her. She fixed Ruhaan with a cold stare, ignoring the pleading look in his eyes, and walked away without a word.

He quickly stood up, ready to follow her, but his mother’s voice rang out once more. “Ruhaan. What’s taking you so long? Come here this instant.”

With visible reluctance, Ruhaan allowed his mother to guide him towards the Chopras. Naina watched from the corner of her eye as Kaushalya made the introductions, her hand firmly on Ruhaan’s arm as if to prevent him from escaping.

“This is my son, Ruhaan,” Kaushalya announced proudly. “Ruhaan, meet Mr. and Mrs. Chopra, and their lovely daughter, Poonam.”

Poonam offered Ruhaan a dazzling smile, extending her hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ruhaan. I’ve heard so much about you.”

Naina felt her stomach twist as she watched the interaction. Ruhaan shook Poonam’s hand politely, but his eyes kept darting back to where Naina stood. She could see the tension in his shoulders, the slight frown that creased his brow as he engaged in small talk with the Chopras.

Suman approached Naina, who was lost in thought as she absently rearranged a vase of flowers. “Hey, did you ever get that saree you were looking for last night?” Suman asked, snapping Naina back to reality.

Naina blinked, momentarily confused. “What? Oh, the saree. No, I didn’t.”

“Well, now’s your chance,” Suman said, nodding towards the living room where Ruhaan was still engrossed in conversation with the Chopras. “He’s downstairs, so you can slip up to his room and grab it without any awkward encounters.”

Naina hesitated for a moment, weighing her options. The thought of entering Ruhaan’s temporary living space made her heart race, but she pushed aside her conflicting emotions. “You’re right,” she said with a determined nod. “I should get it now. Thanks for reminding me.”

Naina made her way upstairs trying to focus on the excitement of the upcoming ring exchange ceremony for her uncle and aunt. For now, she had decided to enjoy this family moment. That’s it. Rest all could wait.
