Chapter 13 No More Separation

He dragged me all the way to the back seat before letting go.

Then he climbed in after me.

His face looked terrifying.

I reached for his hand, trembling. He flung it away.

“Do you really want to end us?

“Six years—do you think they were easy for me?

“I should’ve locked you up back then so you could never leave.

“If you love me, if you truly want to be with me—can you stop pushing me away the moment something happens?”

His eyes reddened. He nearly roared the last words.

Pedestrians passed outside. The sound rose, then faded.

I bit my lip hard.

He waited for an answer, yet still reached to ease my lip.

I tried for his hand again. He flung it away again.

He stared at me, his eyes bloodshot, his ears flushed red.

I opened my mouth. The words came out strained.

“It’s bad to be tangled with him. My mom nearly died escaping.

“Chen Yinian, he’s my real father. I can’t shake him off. I’m scared you’ll hate me. Scared your uncle and aunt will hate me. Your uncle has influence. I don’t want to taint him because of me.

“Let’s separate.”

My heart twisted with every beat. This would be final.

Chen Yinian froze. His pupils widened, his face paling.

Then he gritted his teeth.

“In. Your. Dreams.”

He grabbed the hand he’d flung away twice.

Calm returned to him suddenly.

“Now I get it. You’re just stupid.”

He opened the door and buckled me into the passenger seat.

On the drive back, his lips stayed pressed tight, anger with nowhere to go.

I thought about what had just happened.

He hadn’t heard about the miscarriage.

I let out a quiet breath of relief.
