Chapter 17
Hours earlier
“Boss?”
I snapped out of my thoughts. The weather was less than ideal for what we were about to do. As soon as I had received the message from Mr. Gregorovich, I started planning.
It was strange why the meeting was set out doors, when I was sure we all would have preferred to remain indoors. Nobody in their right minds would have requested an audience in the dead of winter, unless they had ulterior motives.
“Is everything ready?”
“Yes. Everyone is geared up and waiting for your command, sir. ”
A neat selection of finely polished handguns lay on the wooden desk. I had yet to select the iron I would use as I had gotten distracted by the thoughts of her , again.
“Good. This can’t go wrong. You understand what’s at line here? If all else fails, I’m counting on you to be our last resort.”
“Of course. I won’t fail you.”
“ She is your top priority.”
“You have my word, boss. She saved me once. I owe my life to her.”
“Then it’s time to go. Good luck, Petras.”
Though I trusted my men I had hand selected for this mission, none of them came even close to Petras. He out of all of them had the most to prove. He had survived a near death experience, and through a long recovery and rehabilitation, he was back in action, ready to pay his debt. His eagerness and skills were the exact reason why I chose him to lead the sniper team.
Of course, at first I couldn’t be sure there would be a need for snipers, but with a little research of the surrounding area of the meeting place, I discovered a major disadvantage to whomever stood in it. The layout was open, bare, and offered little to no cover in case of a fight. The surrounding buildings were tall, covering every side except the entrance road, making it perfect conditions for an ambush.
Only a fool would enter without preparation and back up. Knowing full well how the minds of my enemies worked, had me believe they would do exactly what I expected them to do. I would have my men already positioned in the buildings before theirs even arrived.
Then it would be my turn to play the part. Pulling the coat over myself and heading down stairs, my thoughts went to her . It had been months since I last saw Katy, but that didn’t mean I hadn’t kept my eye on her. My informants had given me regular updates on her whereabouts, ensuring me she was well taken care of, otherwise I would have intervened sooner.
Her family had relocated to the south to a villa not far from where she vacationed as a child. A story she had shared with me during one of our date nights. It was fairly easy to place my informants as employees at their safehouse to keep tabs on them.
At first Katy had been unwell and distraught of our separation, rightfully so, and it pained me to have caused her that. Soon, I’d repay her for all the suffering she went through because of me. For weeks the reports I got were nothing but snippets of how her mental state had not changed. It almost made me abort the mission and abandon our goal.
But when I received the wedding pictures, I gained a renewed sense of purpose. The wedding seemed small enough but sent a clear message, that she was moving on with her life. I couldn’t accept that.
Originally my plan was to have her move to safety and eliminate the threat, but despite my best efforts, I still had no idea who was behind the hitmen. I worked tirelessly, combed the city, tore through the underground, fought, killed and bribed, and still ended up with nothing. I couldn’t bring Katy back knowing she would still be in danger. I had to bide my time and double my efforts.
A month later my informants delivered early sonogram pictures. They made me realize things were moving a lot faster than I had anticipated. I was on borrowed time. My suspicion was that the Gregoroviches would not be moving during the pregnancy, which gave me a deadline.
I imagined her, how beautiful she was, the way she laughed and the softness of her lips. She occupied my every waking thought, and at night when I took my cock in my hand, she was there in my dreams as well.
Time passed, the seasons changed and I had finally made a breaking discovery. As expected, my informants sent me new images from the villa. The baby bump had grown large over the summer. According to my calculations, at some point in November, the baby would have reached its due date.
I grew anxious by the day knowing I’d see her soon. It became harder to hide my obsession with her. Because that’s what I was, obsessed, completely consumed by her. Some days I felt like I couldn’t breathe because she wasn’t with me. Every day was like torture. But it was about to end.
About a month ago, my informants returned from their post giving their finished report as their targets had returned from hiding. Imagine my surprise when one of them gave me the final piece of the puzzle I had been looking for. The movements and dealings of one Mr. Logan Hunter.
Finally coming to the conclusion of who had been behind all the misdeeds. Digging deeper into his background, not only was he meddling with my business but several other mob families’ as well. It wasn’t hard to convince them to cooperate in taking down this hydra of a snake. Double crossing, insider trading, sabotage, corruption and theft were only a few of his crimes. Clearly he had no honor, no sense of loyalty to anyone.
Logan Hunter was a filthy rat and he had his claws on my Katy. My wife .
I’m going to fucking kill that bastard.
I picked the engraved glock with a silver finish and filled it with bullets, before securing it in its holster, right next to my heart. An extra set of magazines were tucked in my belt in case I needed them. And I was gonna need them. Lighting up my cigarette, I watched the live security footage of the parking lot where a handful of cars were waiting for us. It was show time.
