Chapter Three

Mel

"Are you sure everything's okay?" I asked my Aunt Dorrie. Despite what she was saying, I was worried.

She never asked for help. She was actually always the one helping, like she was with Mattie's little sister Cammie's bakery. The fact that Aunt Dorrie was asking for anything at all had me thinking I should be hitting the road today instead of in a week, like she was suggesting.

"I can be there in a couple hours if you need it."

"No, no, that's okay. Take your time and think about it. I can manage if you don't want to leave the city."

I paused, knowing she was worried I was acting rash, but I knew even if I was, that it was the right decision. I could feel it.

I loved New York City, but, as exciting as the city that never sleeps was, it still felt like everything I'd done lately… like a temporary adventure; it didn't feel like home.

I was willing to bet that Pine Grove might, though, and if it didn't, I would stay a couple of months, help Aunt Dorrie with the Pride Festival, and take care of the bees through Aunt Dorrie's vacation, and then move on to the next adventure.

I had a good feeling about Pine Grove, though; it was the only place that had really felt like home since losing the rest of my family.

"I don't need to think about it. All you needed to do was ask. I'll be there."

Dorrie had dropped everything to take care of me when I needed her. Of course, I wasn't going to bat an eye about doing the same for her.
