“We planned to wait and tell everyone after we spoke to someone first.” His eyes and hers met mine. Paige smiled. Scorpion kept talking.
“The reason is that Paige is pregnant as well. She’s two weeks behind Jauhnna. We’re hoping you’ll help us keep things afloat. We weren’t expecting to both be pregnant at the same time.”
When Scorpion finished, the hollers and clapping were even louder. Paige was watching me. I smiled. She blew me a kiss and mouthed, Come here.
I pushed my chair closer as someone, I believe it was Butcher, yelled, “When are they due?”
“Jauhnna’s due date is November second and Paige’s is November sixteenth,” Scorpion supplied.
I made my way through the bodies, which was hard when so many were going up to the couples to congratulate them.
I slowed down to let them get done. As I sat there, a small lump developed in my throat.
Both couples were so in love, and now to have this great news added to it…
I was happy as hell for them while being a tad envious.
I’d told Scorpion when he met Paige that he’d have to have an old lady and family for me. He was doing it.
Eventually, I made it to their table. I hugged Jauhnna and shook Diablo’s hand first, giving them my best wishes. When I was through, Paige took my hand.
“We wanted to tell you first, and then it was decided at the last minute to tell everyone tonight. However, we’d like you to come with us for a moment. Please.”
“You don’t need to beg me, Dragon Lady. I’ll go with you anywhere, anytime,” I assured her.
The three of us made our way out of the common room into a small crash room. I signaled Dozer to stay out in the common area with Fenrir. Scorpion closed the door.
“What did you need to tell me? I knew Scorpion was up to something when he gave me that look. Congrats, guys. I’m thrilled for you.”
Paige leaned over and we hugged, then kissed each other’s cheeks. Scorpion and I hugged. After that, it was Scorpion who spoke up.
“We wanted not only to tell you the good news first, but there was an ulterior motive behind it. One, we hope you’ll still consider.”
“What?” I asked.
It was Paige who answered. “We would love nothing more in the world than for you to be this baby’s godfather. If we have more children, we’d love for you to be their godfather, too. We know it’s a big responsibility and a lot of work. But we know they couldn’t be better taken care of than by you.”
My breath caught as what she said hit me. They wanted me to take on their kids. They trusted me that much. The first response was joy, followed by concern.
“I’d love nothing more, but what about my physical condition? I won’t be able to do everything an able-bodied parent could. Sure, I can give them love and attention, but there’s more than that.”
“We knew you’d say that. As a godfather, the most important thing is to be there for them in whatever way you can. You’re there for us. We know you can do it for this baby,” Paige said.
“Then I’d be goddamned honored to be this baby’s godfather,” I accepted.
They both smiled, then Scorpion cleared his throat.
“There’s one other thing. If something were to happen to us, Mom would become the baby’s guardian, but we’d like it if you’d agree to serve as co-guardian with her.
She’s still rather young, but we know she’ll be more at ease if someone else is there.
If she were to be gone, then it would rest with you.
We know this is a lot to deal with, so take your time and think about it. ”
“That would require giving them a home, emotional support, and love, which you’d already be doing. We’ve outlined our financial plans and just need to settle on guardianship and other details to finalize our wills. We just want to be prepared,” Paige further explained.
They were hitting me with a lot. Godfather was a huge thing, but adding guardianship if Scorpion and Paige died made me feel sick.
I hated thinking of them ever dying. I wasn’t concerned about money, a house, or anything like that.
It wasn’t as if I’d have my own family to add to the mix.
It was as if he read my mind. Scorpion had to pipe up with more.
“We know that when you get an old lady, it might have to change, but we’ll deal with that when it happens,” Scorpion tacked on.
Shaking my head, I had to set him straight.
“Scorpion, Dragon Lady, I love both of you, and I know I will love this baby. There’s hardly a slim chance I’ll get a family of my own, so no need to worry about me changing my mind.
Though you can if you feel someone else is better suited.
However, until then, I’ll proudly be godfather and co-guardian with Jamila, and I’ll do anything else you need me to do.
I’m so freaking stoked for you.” I gave them my biggest grin so they knew I was telling them the truth. Paige burst into tears.
“What did I say?” I asked, aghast at the thought of making her cry.
I reviewed my words to determine what caused it. She buried her face in her hands. Scorpion brought her to his chest, gently squeezed her upper body, and then smiled.
“It’s nothing. She’s finding that even good news sets her off for no reason.
It’s the hormones. We’re going to see the doctor for her first full appointment next week.
We had the pregnancy confirmed, but no ultrasound or anything.
It’s next Thursday. We want you to be there, if you can,” Scorpion declared.
I was the one with wet eyes, thinking about how much they touched me with their faith in me and love for me. Now, to be able to experience this as if I were the baby’s parent, too, would be even more incredible.
“I’d love nothing more,” I croaked.
It was a while before we pulled ourselves together.
They informed me of the time for the doctor’s appointment next week, as well as the time to meet one evening after work to discuss the details of guardianship and finalize the paperwork.
I left that room filled with so much happiness that it drowned out the sadness that this was the only way I’d ever experience this.
It made me love my two best friends even more.
The whole club partied until the women and kids were too tired to stay awake.
When that happened, their old men gathered them up, goodbyes were said, then they were hustled out of the clubhouse and off to bed.
Since Diablo had his arms full of a sleeping Jaycee, Scorpion carried Chasin for them.
I loved catching a glimpse of the father my friend would become.
Children had always been drawn to both of us.
He’d make a great dad, and without a doubt, Paige would be an awesome mom.
As for Diablo and Jauhnna, we already knew how great they were. Those were some lucky kids.
Not long after they left, the cum sluts and hangers joined us.
