VANESSA

T he opulence of the grand reception hall of the Celestial Station stunned me, a far cry from anything I’d ever seen on Earth. Shimmering holographic displays danced in the air, casting ethereal light across the faces of my fellow contestants. Above us, a star-field ceiling stretched into infinity, so realistic I almost believed we floated among the cosmos itself.

Panoramic windows lined one wall, showcasing the vast expanse of space. Pinpricks of starlight dotted the inky blackness, and I pressed my palm against the cool glass.

“Quite a sight, isn’t it?”

I turned to find a tall, willowy woman with iridescent green skin standing beside me. Her large, almond-shaped eyes blinked slowly as she gazed out the window.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” I admitted.

She smiled, revealing pointed teeth. “First time off-world?”

I nodded, suddenly feeling very small and out of place.

The room buzzed with nervous energy as contestants mingled. A muscular man with blue-tinted skin and tribal markings circled the room, his eyes darting from person to person as if sizing up the competition. Near the bar, a petite woman with feathers instead of hair chatted animatedly with a hulking figure whose skin looked like polished granite.

A small blue alien approached me. His markings pulsed with a soft light as he spoke.

“Welcome to the Celestial Station! I’m Klix, one of the show’s aides. If you need anything at all, just give me a shout.”

He darted off, weaving through the crowd with surprising agility.

I blinked, still processing the brief encounter. The constant barrage of new sights and sounds left me dizzy. I clenched my fists, trying to ground myself.

“Welcome, stargazers and soulmates!”

The room fell silent as a striking figure glided to the center of the room. Her iridescent blue skin shimmered under the lights, and her silver hair seemed to float around her as if suspended in water. Piercing violet eyes swept over the crowd, and I swore they lingered on me.

Her voice rang out, clear and melodious. “Greetings, celestial seekers. I am Lysandra Vex, your guide through this cosmic journey of love.”

This was really happening. I was light-years from home, about to embark on an interstellar dating show.

“You’ve all come from different corners of the galaxy, each with your own unique stories and desires. Here, on Stardust Souls, we’ll explore the universal language of love.”

A ripple of excitement coursed through the room. I caught the eye of a handsome blue-skinned alien, and he winked at me. My cheeks flushed.

“And now, allow me to introduce my co-host,” Lysandra continued, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. “Caelan Solis.”

A tall, striking figure stepped forward. His silver skin gleamed under the lights, and his deep turquoise gaze passed over the crowd. “Thank you, Lysandra,” he said, his voice smooth as silk. “It’s a pleasure to be here with all of you.”

Something in the air shifted. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but there was a tension between Lysandra and Caelan. Their smiles seemed forced, their body language stiff.

But before I could dwell on it, Lysandra clapped her hands, drawing our attention back to her. “And let’s not forget what our lucky winners will receive! The grand prize is an all-expenses-paid vacation to Elysium Prime, the galaxy’s most exclusive resort planet. Imagine basking on beaches of diamond sand, dining under the light of three moons, and experiencing luxuries beyond your wildest dreams!”

A collective gasp rippled through the contestants, and I felt a thrill of excitement. A vacation like that would be the adventure of a lifetime.

“Now, let’s discuss your first challenge.” Lysandra’s eyes sparkled as she continued.

This was it. Time to get serious.

“In one hour, you’ll be entering our cosmic escape room. The first pair to break free will win a special prize—one that’ll give you a significant advantage in the next round.”

My pulse quickened. An escape room? In space? The concept both thrilled and terrified me. I’d done a few back on Earth, but this... this was on a whole other level.

“Each pair will be transported to a unique location within our simulated galaxy,” Caelan continued. “You’ll have to work together to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles, and find your way back to the station.”

I scanned the room, trying to spot my partner. Which of these alien beings would I be paired with?

“Remember,” Caelan added, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, “in space, no one can hear you scheme. Use your wits, charm, and any other assets at your disposal to come out on top.”

I couldn’t help but notice Lysandra’s slight frown at Caelan’s words. There was definitely something going on between these two.

But my focus quickly shifted as Lysandra began to announce the pairings. My palms grew sweaty, and I held my breath, waiting to hear my name.

“Now,” Lysandra said, drawing my attention back to her, “let’s introduce our couples.”

She began listing off names, some familiar, others completely alien to my ears. With each pairing, my anticipation grew.

“Jake Miller and Silla Taelon.”

“Rachel Thompson and Tarnox Zendric.”

“Ethan Parker and Nala Maelis.”

My palms grew sweaty as I waited for my name to be called. Who would I be spending the next hour with, trapped in some alien puzzle box?

“ Wilson,” Lysandra called out. “You’ll be paired with... Dr. Zarnak Thal.”

A towering figure moved towards me through the crowd, and my jaw dropped. Dr. Zarnak Thal, if that’s who he was, towered over the other contestants, easily seven feet tall with broad, muscular shoulders. His skin was a light, icy blue – almost white – with shoulders covered in a layer of short, dense fur.

But as I studied him, I noticed something. Behind that imposing exterior, there was a hint of uncertainty in his eyes. Maybe he was just as nervous as I was.

“Alright, lovebirds,” Caelan’s voice cut through my thoughts. “You have one hour to get acquainted with your partners. And then, the real fun begins.”

As the crowd began to disperse, mingling and chatting excitedly, the giant alien came to tower over me.

“Hi there,” I said, holding out my hand and summoning my warmest smile. “I’m . Looks like we’re partners!”

He regarded my outstretched hand before carefully taking it in his much larger one. His grip was firm but gentle, his fur surprisingly soft against my skin.

“Dr. Zarnak Kolvari,” he replied, his tone formal. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

I racked my brain for something – anything – to say.

“Hey, did you hear about the claustrophobic astronaut?” I blurted out. “He just needed a little space!”

He frowned. “I fail to see how an astronaut’s psychological condition is relevant to our current situation.”

I bit my lip, fighting back a giggle. “It’s a joke. You know, because we’re in space? And about to be locked in a room together?”

His eyes widened slightly. “Ah. I see. That is... quite clever, Miss Wilson.”

“Please, call me .” I smiled up at him. “And terrible jokes are one of my strong points.”

He bowed. “Then you should call me Zarnak. Humor is a good talent to possess.”

We moved to a far corner, his impressive stature parting the crowd effortlessly.

“So,” I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt. “What’s your specialty? Any skills that might come in handy for an escape room?”

Zarnak shook his head. “I’m afraid not. My work usually involves studying alien ecosystems, not navigating through them virtually.”

“That sounds fascinating! “ I perked up. “What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever encountered?”

For the first time, I saw genuine enthusiasm light up Zarnak’s eyes. “There was a fungal colony on Epsilon VI that communicated through pheromones. It created intricate chemical symphonies that-”

He stopped abruptly, his expression closing off. “My apologies. I’m sure you don’t want to hear about xenobiological minutiae.”

“Are you kidding?” I grinned. “That sounds amazing! I’d love to hear more about it sometime.”

Zarnak blinked, clearly surprised by my interest. “I... thank you. Perhaps after we successfully complete this challenge?”

“It’s a date,” I said, then felt my cheeks flush again. “I mean, not a date date, obviously. Just a... friendly exchange of information between challenge partners.”

A small smile tugged at Zarnak’s lips. “I look forward to it.”

The excitement of our first challenge mingled with a healthy dose of nerves, creating a potent cocktail of adrenaline that coursed through my veins. I glanced up at Zarnak, marveling at how his towering form dwarfed mine.

His face was a mask of calm concentration, but I noticed the fur on his arms standing slightly on end. It was oddly comforting to know that even my stoic alien partner felt the pressure of the moment.

“Ready?” I asked.

Zarnak gave a curt nod. “Affirmative.”

We stepped inside a circular chamber bathed in soft, pulsating light and I gasped as the walls shimmered and shifted around us, covered in what looked like living circuitry.

“Incredible,” I breathed, spinning slowly to take in the futuristic decor. Holographic displays flickered in the air, showing strange symbols and alien script that danced before my eyes.

Zarnak moved methodically around the room, his yellow eyes narrowed in concentration. I watched him, admiring the way his muscular form moved with such purpose and grace.

“,” he called, pulling me back to the here and now. “I believe I’ve found something of interest.”

I joined him at a sleek, black pedestal at the side of the room. A large, curved screen hovered above it, displaying a complex array of alien symbols. My fingers itched to touch the smooth surface, but I held back, not wanting to trigger anything prematurely.

“What do you make of it?” I asked, leaning in close to study the symbols.

Zarnak’s brow furrowed as he examined the display. “These symbols bear similarities to several known alien languages. See here?” He pointed to a row of glyphs. “This structure is reminiscent of ancient Zygonian script, while these elements...” His finger traced another set of symbols. “They share characteristics with modern Thalaxian pictographs.”

I tried to follow his explanation, but the complexity of it made my head spin. As he continued his linguistic breakdown, my mind wandered, searching for a connection I could understand. Suddenly, it hit me.

“Wait!” I gasped, interrupting Zarnak mid-sentence. “I think I have an idea.”

Zarnak raised an eyebrow. “Please, elaborate.”

“Okay, this might sound crazy, but... what if we approach this like Earth emojis?” I pulled out my communicator, bringing up the emoji keyboard. “Look, we use these little pictures to convey emotions and concepts. What if these alien symbols work in a similar way?”

Zarnak’s eyes widened slightly, a look of intrigue crossing his features. “An interesting hypothesis. While I’m not entirely familiar with Earth’s ‘emoji’ system, the concept of pictographic communication is not without precedent in xenolinguistics.”

“Great!” I beamed, feeling a wave of confidence. “So, let’s try to match these symbols to emotions or ideas. You can provide the linguistic insights, and I’ll make the intuitive leaps.”

Zarnak dipped his head. “Very well. Let us begin with this symbol here.” He pointed to a swirling glyph near the top of the display.

We worked together, Zarnak offering detailed explanations of linguistic patterns while I connected symbols to emotions and concepts. As we decoded more messages, our confidence grew, but we also encountered setbacks.

“No, no, no,” Zarnak insisted, his fur bristling slightly. “That symbol clearly indicates a state of agitation, not joy.”

I stood my ground, gesturing emphatically at the screen. “But look at the way it curves upward at the end. That’s got to be a positive emotion!”

We stared at each other, then both burst into laughter.

“Perhaps,” Zarnak conceded, his yellow eyes twinkling with amusement, “it represents a complex emotional state. Both agitation and joy.”

I nodded, grinning up at him. “Like how we’re feeling right now? Frustrated but also having fun?”

His gaze softened as he looked at me. “Indeed. A most accurate assessment.”

As we neared completion, the final sequence of symbols glowed brightly on the screen. Caught up in the excitement of our progress, I reached for the input panel.

“Wait-” Zarnak began, but it was too late. My fingers danced across the surface, inputting the sequence with a flourish.

The room hummed, the walls pulsing with increased intensity. A mechanical voice spoke in an alien language, its tone unmistakably confused.

Suddenly, ports opened in the ceiling and walls. A storm of colorful, sticky confetti burst forth, engulfing us in a whirlwind of shimmering particles. I yelped in surprise, instinctively moving closer to Zarnak as the confetti swirled around us.

When the storm subsided, we stood covered head to toe in sticky, rainbow-hued confetti. I locked eyes with Zarnak, taking in his usually pristine white mane, now a colorful mess.

Then, unable to contain ourselves any longer, we burst into laughter. The tension of the challenge melted away as we giggled like children.

“I believe,” Zarnak said between chuckles, “we may have made a slight error in our translation.”

I nodded, still grinning. “Yeah, I think we might have accidentally told it to ‘celebrate’ instead of ‘proceed’.”

I raised my hand to my forehead, only to feel the sticky confetti clinging to my skin. When I pulled my hand away, I knew I’d left a colorful imprint behind.

“Well,” I sighed, still smiling, “at least we made this challenge more festive.”

Zarnak’s expression grew serious, though his eyes still held a glimmer of amusement. “We should correct our mistake quickly. The challenge is not yet complete.”

We worked together to fix the translation, this time double-checking each symbol before I carefully input the sequence. The door to the next challenge swung open with a satisfying click.

Grinning triumphantly, I held up my hand for a high-five. Zarnak looked at it quizzically before understanding dawned on his face. He raised his much larger hand and gently tapped it against mine, sending a small shower of confetti flying.

As we moved towards the exit, we helped each other pick off the sticky confetti. My fingers brushed against Zarnak’s fur.

“Well,” I said, breaking the tension with a smile, “at least we’ll make a colorful first impression in the next challenge.”

Zarnak nodded, a rare smile gracing his features. “Indeed. Though I do find this particular shade of purple quite fetching on you.”

I felt my cheeks grow warm at his compliment. We paused at the threshold of the next room, and I was struck by pride in our success and excitement for what was to come.

I looked up at Zarnak, finding his yellow eyes already fixed on me. With a shared nod of determination, we stepped forward into our next challenge, leaving a trail of glittering confetti in our wake.
