Just a Scratch #2

The crack of his neck vertebrae sounded like splintering timber.

The mutant's head snapped to the side at an unnatural, grotesque angle. The spine was completely severed.

Raze dropped the severed arm. The tail uncoiled. The commander's lifeless body crashed like a wet sack onto the metal floor, twitched once, and lay still in a rapidly spreading pool of blood.

The corridor fell into sudden, deathly silence.

Even the mechanical screaming of the alarm sirens seemed to suffocate in the crushing, black presence of this demon.

The remaining scattered mutineers at the ends of the corridors had fled.

All that remained was the smoke, the stench of shredded flesh, and the heavy, rasping breathing of the warlord.

He stood over the corpse. His skin was deep black, veins protruding like thick cables beneath the surface.

He lifted his head. His eyes were still two abyssal black holes with a glowing red ring blazing at their centers.

The demon searched for the next target. He needed flesh to bleed off the absolute, boiling destructive rage in his veins.

Then his gaze lowered. He found me.

I sat leaning against the steel casing. My left hand pressed firmly over the gaping cut on my forearm. Blood seeped hot and sticky through my fingers, dripping onto my combat pants. I was pale as chalk, my breath coming in quick, shallow bursts against the pain of my bruised spine and sliced skin.

His black eyes fixed on the red blood running over my skin.

The transformation in his mind happened in a fraction of a second. The raging war god who had just torn a traitor to pieces collapsed. The murderous rage imploded, leaving nothing but naked, bottomless panic.

He didn't cross the distance between us with an attack leap. He hurled himself toward me.

Two meters away, his knees gave out.

The massive weight of this monster crashed onto the grating. The impact shook the floor. He slid the last few centimeters toward me on his knees until his broad thighs almost touched my boots.

He raised his hands. The massive, blood-smeared claws hovered over my body, trembling.

He wanted to touch me, wanted to staunch the wound, but he didn't dare.

The fear of hurting me further with his raw, uncontrolled strength paralyzed him.

His chest rose and fell in panicked, hyperventilating bursts.

The glowing red fire in his pupils flickered uncontrollably.

A deep, broken whimper tore from his throat—a sound so utterly wrong for this killing machine that it sent a stab through my heart.

The thick, black tail slid silently across the floor, circling my hips without wrapping tight. It simply formed a protective ring around my body, shielding me from the rest of the world.

“Look at me,” I forced out. My voice was quiet, rough, but steady. No trembling. No tears.

He didn’t react. His gaze stayed locked on my bleeding wound. His chest heaved faster and faster. Panic was eating him alive. The loss of control I’d surrendered to in his chambers had now seized him.

I released my right hand—the uninjured one—from the cold steel beside me.

I raised my arm and pressed my palm flat against his cheek. His skin was scalding hot, damp with sweat and the sticky blood of his enemies. His jaw muscles twitched hard beneath my fingers.

The touch was a physical shock. He flinched as if I’d branded him with pure plasma.

“Look at me,” I repeated, louder this time. Sharp. Commanding. The boss mode that would drag him out of the darkness.

He jerked his head up. His gaze met mine.

I stared directly into the black abysses of his demon eyes. I didn’t pull back. I showed no fear of that monstrous face. I let my thumb stroke soothingly over his hard cheekbone. Cool, soft human skin against the hot, indestructible shell of an apex predator.

“Just a scratch, Boss,” I whispered, and a faint, dry smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.

The words slammed into his system. My calm voice, the lack of shock on my face, the steady, grounding touch of my hand on his cheek—all of it broke through the walls of his panic.

He blinked hard.

The transformation reversed. The abyssal black receded from his eyes, melting away like shadows in sunlight, until the familiar, glowing gold of his amber irises returned. The deep black skin lightened inch by inch back to dark, rich violet. The thick veins on his chest withdrew.

He let out a long, shaky breath.

His hands closed carefully around my shoulders. No dominance. No demand. Pure, desperate necessity. He pulled me forward.

I let myself slide into his grip without resistance, pressing my uninjured side against his hard, hot chest. He wrapped both arms around my torso and pulled me against him.

He buried his face deep in the curve of my neck.

I felt him draw in air, inhale my scent—sweat, adrenaline, and life—to prove to his own mind that I was still here.

The tail that had formed a barricade around us pulled tighter, settling heavy and warm across my legs.

“I thought he’d cut your throat,” he rumbled against my skin. His voice was fractured, deep—a distant echo of the monster he’d just been. His fangs grazed my collarbone. Not a bite. Just desperate contact with the reality of my pulse.

“I don’t let some gray lackey cut my throat,” I replied quietly. I raised my left hand and ran it carefully through his thick, jet-black hair. My fingers slid through the strands, scratching gently over his scalp. “He was too slow. You were faster.”

He lifted his head. His amber eyes were completely clear now. The strategist, the warlord, the dom—all of it returned to his features, but that protective, absolute core in his gaze remained.

His gaze traveled over my bleeding forearm. The wound throbbed painfully, but the bleeding wasn’t serious. A clean cut into the muscle tissue.

“My personal guard’s medics are on level two,” he commanded. The rough authority was back, but it didn’t sound condescending. It was the voice of a man locking down his empire to get what mattered most to safety. “We need to stop the bleeding. And seal the wound.”

He stood. His knees cracked slightly. He wiped the commander’s blood on his pants before bending down to me again.

He didn’t wait for me to stand. He slid one arm under my knees, the other behind my back. With an effortless, fluid motion, he lifted me from the floor. My weight was nothing in his arms. I leaned my head against his broad shoulder, exhaustion slowly creeping through the cracks in the adrenaline.

The thick tail swung calm and watchful behind him as he walked with long, steady strides through the smoky corridor. The mutineers’ corpses lay in the dirt. The fortress belonged to him again.

“Your tactics worked, little strategist,” he rumbled quietly as the hum of the intact emergency generators swept over us.

I closed my eyes and breathed in his heavy, soothing musk. The pain in my arm receded into the background. The power dynamic between us had reached an entirely new plateau. I was no longer the pet he wanted to domesticate. And he was no longer the warlord I had to flee.

We were an alliance of fire and ice, forged in the bloody bowels of this fortress.

“It always does, Boss,” I whispered into the darkness of his neck. “It always does.”
