Chapter 21

Calista

I didn’t get much sleep because as soon as one of us opened our eyes, we were waking up the other. Last night, I had more orgasms than I’ve had in my last few relationships combined.

Then, this morning, Evan woke me up with his head between my legs and was lazily eating me out. His words in my head from last night about how it wasn’t for me, it was for him, make me so damn hot.

I’ve been with a few guys, and all of them saw me going down on me as a chore, something they had to do to get me ready for what they wanted. But with Evan proving he honestly enjoys it? Fuck, this man is going to be the death of me.

I’m in the bathroom getting dressed, and every time I move, I’m deliciously sore. In my younger years, riding Evan the way I did last night would have been easy, but now it’s a workout for sure.

When I pick up my phone before heading downstairs, I see I have a missed phone call from Kaylee and go outside to talk to her. There is so much to say.

“Calista?” she answers.

I just launch right into it. “Evan and I had sex, and it was amazing.” She lets me go over all the details of how it happened, but once I’m into the story, I realize she was more excited by the kiss than this.

“Kaylee? What’s wrong?” I ask.

“I know this is a big moment for you, and this is shit timing, but I’m finding it hard to be excited for you,” she says.

My heart sinks. “What is going on?”

“I was brought in for more questioning by a not-so-nice guy at the station, who informed me that I am now a suspect.”

“What the fuck?” I say before turning on my heel and marching my way back inside to confront Evan. He may not be working, but I know he’s keeping up with the case.

“We will settle this once and for all,” I tell her. As I go, I text Cody to get here and to sit with Evan. He asks if everything is okay. I say I don’t know, but I need him here now. I’m walking inside when he informs me he’s on his way.

When I walk into the room, Evan greets me with a happy grin. It disappears when I don’t match it.

“Kaylee is a suspect. Are you kidding me?” I say, raising my voice.

His brows knit together, and I can clearly see the pain on his face.

“I can’t talk about this. But she should go talk to Jack,” he says, pleading with his eyes for me to drop this.

For a moment, I’m torn. Did he know she was brought in for questioning when we were sleeping together? I have so many questions, but this isn’t the time for them.

“Have you talked to Jack?” I ask Kaylee.

“No,” she says softly.

“Okay, listen. Cody is on his way to stay with Evan, and I’m on my way to you. I will go with you to see Jack.”

“I’m scared.” Her voice is trembling and all the fight is out of her.

“I know. Get ready, and I’ll be there soon,” I say, and we hang up.

“Did you know last night?” I ask one question I have to know.

“No, I haven’t talked to anyone at the station in a few days,” he says.

As I move around the house to get my stuff together, Evan calls out.

“Don’t Evan. I will always choose her, and that is what I am doing right now. This is bullshit and you know it.” I leave to go upstairs, to change my clothes and throw my hair up in a messy bun.

When I come back downstairs, Evan is standing at the bottom of the stairs.

“I’m not asking you to choose. Your fierce protectiveness of those who matter to you is one of the many things I love about you, and I’d never ask you to change. Tell Jack I told him to call Rick about the details, and he will get him everything he needs. I will call him when you leave, so he’s ready,” he says softly.

“Why do I suddenly feel like I’m sleeping with the enemy?” I look at my feet unable to meet his eyes.

“I want you to know I choose you. Whatever comes our way, I choose you,” Evan says just as Cody bursts through the door.

I take a step back from Evan and don’t say anything.

“What the fuck is going on?” Cody says.

“Kaylee is now a suspect in Calvin's drug case, and she is in full-on panic mode. I’m taking her to talk to Jack,” I say, heading to the door and putting my jacket on.

When I look back, Evans's eyes are on me.

“I will be back later, and we will talk tonight,” I say to him, and I can feel the relief in his eyes. A small smile a nod is all I get.

“Go. I’ll make the call,” he says.

Getting in my car, I drive to Kaylee. Though I don’t remember the drive to my apartment and before I know it, I’m parking and running up the steps.

“Kaylee!” I call when I walk through the door.

“I’m here and ready. Nothing I can do to hide the puffy eyes,” she says, coming from the bathroom.

If I look hard, I can tell she’s been crying. But only because I’m her best friend and know what to look for.

“I don’t think anyone will be able to tell,” I say, taking her hand as we walk out and down the street to the outdoor store Jack owns. Though I’m praying he is working today and if not, they can get a hold of him.

“Welcome in! Let me know if I can help you with anything,” the girl at the counter smiles.

“Actually, is Jack in?” I ask.

“Right here,” Jack says, coming from the back room.

“If it isn’t that big city girl,” Jack greets us.

I force a smile, and he picks up on it, his eyes going between Kaylee and me.

“Please tell me you are still taking on some cases as needed,” I say.

“I am. Let’s go back to my office.” Then he beckons to us to follow him to the back of the store.

Once we’re in his office, Kaylee and I sit on his leather sofa. After closing the door, he grabs a notebook and pen before he joins us on the leather chair beside us, instead of behind the desk.

“What’s going on?” he asks.

“Evan sent us. As you have probably heard, he was shot at Kaylee’s house when they did a drug raid after finding out her ex was selling drugs from her house,” I start, and Kylee joins in.

“While I was at work, I had no idea he was doing it. On the day of the raid, I came home early because I wasn’t feeling good. I found Calvin in my living room. A few days before, I had broken up with him, so I was pissed he was in my house without an invitation. Then Evan was shot, and they put a pause on sweeping my house or whatever. I have been staying at Calista’s because I can’t go home,” she says.

“Still?” Jack asks.

“Apparently. When I call, I can never get an answer about what is going on with my house. I was told they’d have some questions, which I figured they would. Well, I was called in yesterday and told I’m a suspect. They tried to ask me a bunch of questions. I don’t know much, but I’ve watched enough shows to tell them I wasn’t answering any of them. They didn’t hold me, so I guess that’s good.”

“Evan won’t talk about it, but he told me to have you call Rick at the station for the details,” I add.

“Okay, so if they call you in, you have them call me. You did the right thing by not answering any questions. You don’t speak to them unless I’m there. It’s your right to have a lawyer present at all times,” Jack says.

After Jack has both of us give him all the details we can from the raid and the day Evan was shot, he goes to his desk and makes the call to Rick.

Nervously, I turn my phone over and over in my hands. While I want to text Evan because last night was mind blowing, I also feel like doing so will break some kind of friend code. Right now, she really needs me.

Jack has a commanding presence on the phone and a calming one when talking to us. It’s the first time I’ve had a chance to relax, and my brain is racing. Evan is on one side, and Kaylee is on the other, but I don’t see a way to bridge that gap right now. I really hope Jack has better luck.
