Chapter 13 Emily
EMILY
Shit. This was not good. I stopped breathing for what felt like a full minute as I blinked up at him in shock.
He cursed under his breath before hanging his head. “I’m sorry,” he said and I nodded, bringing my arms up to wrap around myself. A shiver wracked my body as the heat from the shower began to dissipate. Donovan quickly grabbed a towel and wrapped it around me, apologizing again.
“It’s fine,” I said, trying to keep my tone light and calm. It wasn’t fine. I was trying not to freak the fuck out.
Donovan tossed the condom and rinsed his hands before grabbing his towel and wrapping it around his waist. He led me out of the bathroom and guided me to the bed, sitting on the edge.
I followed suit, lowering myself onto the mattress next to him and picked at the edge of my towel, unable to meet his eyes.
“I’m clean,” he rushed out, and my gaze snapped to his. “I get checked routinely and I haven’t… I don’t… It’s been a while,” he said with a wince.
Oh.
“And I’m always safe,” he assured me. Then he stood and began to pace.
“I don’t know what happened,” he continued, running a frustrated hand through his hair.
“I’ve never had one break on me before.” He was spiraling, and I was worried he’d give himself a panic attack.
I stood and reached for him, placing my hand gently on his arm.
He halted mid stride, and his wild eyes lifted to my face.
“I’m on birth control,” I informed him, and his shoulders relaxed fractionally. “I haven’t been with anybody in a long time.” His brows pinched in confusion, and he tilted his head thoughtfully as though trying to work out a puzzle. “What about Josh?” he asked hesitantly.
“I never slept with Josh. We messed around some but hadn’t taken things that far yet,” I admitted with a shrug. “Which is probably why he cheated on me,” I added with a self-deprecating chuckle. I plopped down on the bed again and studied my hands in my lap.
“Hey, that’s not your fault,” Donovan said reassuringly, reaching for my hands and lacing his fingers through mine. “You could probably sense it deep down he wasn’t right for you and that he was a fucking idiot.” That made me laugh for real this time.
“You’re probably right,” I agreed, heaving a deep breath and pushing Josh from my mind.
“Anyway, I’m diligent about taking my birth control.
I don’t think we have anything to worry about.
I haven’t missed a dose since I was nineteen.
” Donovan’s relief was palpable as the tension eased from his face.
“We should continue to take precautions, though, just to be on the safe side,” I said, and he cocked an eyebrow.
“I mean, i-if you wanted to do it again. Tonight,” I clarified, so he wouldn’t think I expected anything more beyond the here and now.
He halted my rambling with a gentle tug to my towel. The fold at my breasts gave way easily like it had just been waiting to be unraveled. The towel pooled around my waist, and Donovan’s eyes darkened with need as he took in my bare breasts.
“You’re in luck,” he replied, his gravelly voice making my stomach clench with need.
He lifted his hand to cup my breast, dragging his thumb over my pebbled nipple.
A whimper escaped my lips, and my thighs pressed together.
“Because I’ve got enough condoms to ensure you’ll be screaming my name until the sun comes up.
” He pulled me to him possessively and captured my lips with his demanding kiss.
Then he spent the rest of the night making good on that promise.
