Chapter 10

Chapter ten

When Avyanna leaves for town, I get dressed and look around her apartment.

There’s really nothing to it. With her being a hunter, it makes sense.

She travels a lot for work, and there’s only so much she can travel with, especially if she’s trying to get somewhere quickly.

I can’t help but wonder if the hunters have some sort of moving agency on speed dial or something of the sort.

I roll my eyes at the stupid thought. What does it matter if they have a moving agency? Avyanna can literally become other people; I’m sure she’s able to get new stuff without needing money.

I’m just so used to my father, who could basically snap his fingers to get anything he wanted.

I swear he had more money than I could ever comprehend, and he made sure everyone knew it when he was alive, too.

For as long as I can remember, my father moved us from house to house, all over the world, each one furnished to the nines.

I never knew whether he owned the homes we stayed in.

Every time I tried to ask, he told me it wasn’t my place.

He also made it very clear that none of his assets would come to me when he died.

It wasn’t like I could argue with him because the only ones who knew I existed were the guards who used to protect me.

Since I was a little girl, I’ve longed for a family and to feel like I belong somewhere.

Being locked up inside house after house, I gave up on that dream.

Now that Avyanna has gotten me away from the guards who kept me under lock and key, maybe I can finally be happy.

I know it’s going to be difficult to integrate into society with my inability to look at people, but I want to make it work; I’m tired of being confined to one place.

The soft click of a door echoes down the hall, and I go on the defensive.

Part of me hopes it’s Avyanna, but if she’s already back, I’ll be shocked; she wasn’t gone for long.

However, I keep having to remind myself that we’re far from any of the shops.

I just didn’t think it’d be easy to find a veil.

Heading toward the living room, I go to round the corner and run smack dab into Avyanna. I nearly fall, but she catches me, a smile cresting her lips.

“Going somewhere?” she asks nonchalantly.

”I was going to see if you were already back or if I was going to have to turn someone to stone for coming in here. Thankfully, it was the former and not the latter.”

Her smile widens. “It’s almost Halloween. Costumes are in every store that can get their hands on them. So, in light of that, I got you a full costume since you said you’ve always wanted to dress up.”

Tears well in my eyes as I stare at her. My breath catches in my lungs when she pulls a beautiful black dress and a corresponding black veil out of a bag. No one has ever done something so nice for me.

Her eyes lock onto mine, and she drops everything she holds to wrap me up in her arms. “What’s wrong, my little relic?”

I sniffle. “That was just so sweet of you.”

She rubs her hand in circles on my back and chuckles. “Well, you did give me an amazing orgasm before I left. It gave me a little bit of a pep in my step, if you know what I mean.”

Pushing away from her, I roll my eyes. “Is that all I need to do to get anything I want from you?”

“Maybe,” she says, rolling her bottom lip between her teeth and staring at me with hooded eyes. “Why don’t you go change before I decide to take you back to the bed and have my fill of you?”

My clit starts pulsing, and I curse under my breath. Her nostrils flare, a sign I’m learning means she smells my arousal, so I rush to pick up the bag of things she brought me and hurry to change.

After I squeeze into the form-fitting dress Avyanna bought—somehow perfectly knowing my size—I head into the bathroom to don the veil.

As soon as I spot myself in the mirror, my jaw drops to the floor.

I’ve never worn a dress like this. The beautiful silk hugs all my curves perfectly, although the dress is relatively short compared to the ones I’m accustomed to, barely reaching mid-thigh on me.

The neckline is another thing altogether, plunging down to show off my usually nonexistent cleavage with lace adorning the cups in intricate designs.

Avyanna’s silhouette coming up behind me in the mirror has me refocusing my attention. Her brows furrow as she gets closer. “Everything okay?”

I roll my shoulders back and step closer to the mirror to put my veil on. “Yep. All good.”

Her lips purse, meeting my gaze in the mirror. Heat blossoms low in my belly, making me want to flee. How am I already so infatuated with her?

She clears her throat, and I realize I was staring at her lips. “What’s going on in that pretty little head of yours?”

I gnaw on my lip. “I’ve never worn a dress like this, and… I really like it. Thank you.”

The corner of her lips tips up into a small smile, and she comes to stand directly behind me. Placing her hands on my hips, she pulls me flush to her. I whimper, loving having her so close.

I watch in the mirror as she places a gentle kiss on my neck and then sucks my earlobe into her mouth, nibbling on it lightly. My knees grow weak, making me nearly fall to the floor.

She tuts and wraps her arms around me to keep me standing. “My, my. You’re so easy to tease.”

“It seems like my body is at your beck and call,” I say with a sultry undertone to my voice.

Her tongue darts out to lick a trail up my neck to my ear. “I do owe you an orgasm.”

I shake my head and sigh. “Not now. We should get to my father’s house sooner rather than later. The longer we wait, the more guards they’ll be pulling in to look for me. I’d rather not fight with the lot of them unless I have to.”

With one last kiss to my neck, she huffs out a grunt. “Fine. Let’s get this over with.”

Pulling out of her hold, I adjust my veil. Avyanna continues to stand behind me, looking me up and down. Her ice-blue eyes darken, making it hard for me not to turn around and crush my lips to hers.

But then I realize what she’s wearing. Since I’ve come into the bathroom, she’s changed into a sleek black tuxedo with a slim green tie, one that matches the color of my eyes perfectly. My heart flutters hard in my chest, a feeling that’s both unfamiliar and not entirely unpleasant.

Avyanna chuckles, pulling me out of my trance. “If you’re going to just stare at me, I’m going to have a hard time not ripping that dress off you. Aren’t we supposed to be getting out of here?”

I clear my throat and mutter a quick ‘brat’ before finishing my attempt to get myself ready.
