Chapter 46
Guess what came in our mail last week? Yes, the electric bill but that’s not what I had in mind—the J. C. Penney’s and Sear’s Christmas books!! Glory, glory!!! Proof that this miserable hot summer does have an end and there REALLY is going to be a holiday season this year.
Just think back. We had rain at the first of June then presto the political fight was on, and the heat came right along with it. The closer it got to election time the higher the thermometer rose. Then the primaries and run offs were over—it’s cooler now, isn’t it? We even have had some RAIN!!
With the snow or at least COLD weather we can look forward to those things we had almost put on the endangered species list. Things like long flannel nightshirts to wear when we snuggle into nice CHILLY beds, mittens and scarves to keep our hands from becoming FREEZING red, and noses that turn red with COLD.
And supper again! Real suppers with hot biscuits and gravy, and popcorn for bedtime snacks. Doesn’t it sound grand after a steady diet of Cheese Whiz sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches, and bologna sandwiches. (Who could stand to cook in all the heat?)
Our poor stomachs, conditioned to eight gallons of tea and a cold cut slapped between two slabs of bread three times a day, may not know how to react to FOOD again.
It’s not long until visions of sugar plums, creamy fudge, pralines and all those other yummy goodies can dance through our minds—even hot chocolate will good again!!
Yep, September is gone. We can throw it a farewell kiss and say “hello” to October. Goodness!! Only 83 shopping days ’til Christmas!!
