Chapter 19
A few weeks later, Dove and May discussed at length the conversation May had with their Queen. May had not spoken a single word to Taylor since. Dove and Taylor had had a conversation that lasted a few hours but May hadn’t poked in, believing Dove would share if she wanted to.
After a slow morning of making love, Dove had struck up a conversation once May had cooked their morning meal.
They sat at the small wooden table with the sun high in the sky.
Dove cleared her throat instantly, capturing May’s attention.
Her posture was rigid with anxiety running through their bond.
“May, I don’t want you to be forced to commit treason and I want you to do this before the pup comes.
” She reached her small hand across the table to capture May’s.
She was dressed in a light blue chemise that covered her legs.
“Just go to town and make sure that it’s safe enough.
I know you said that some tension may have been relieved with the last council meeting but go see for yourself.
You don’t even have to tell Taylor why you are going.
If you want an excuse, you can get me some stuff for the pup.
I’ve heard they have the perfect ingredients for nausea tea.
I would just like to make sure that everything is all right.
I know you are upset with Taylor for practically telling you to choose between us and the kingdom, but I know you don’t want to bring the pup into the world if there’s a uprising brewing.
” Her hazel, almost gold eyes pleaded with the Alpha.
The journey would take all day and if anything happened to Dove, she could feel it in their bond.
She wouldn’t be able to do anything, and her Alpha would probably haunt her until she saw Dove.
“What if I leave and something happens? You are in the final stage of your pregnancy.” She touched on their mating bond.
They were mates for almost two weeks now and they were still navigating it.
Their souls were intertwined for the rest of their lives.
While they didn’t share physical pain or thoughts, their emotions were bound together.
They could always feel each other and use their emotions to soothe the others.
It differed from pheromones because they could do it anywhere and anytime, and others weren’t able to see it.
Anyone in the vicinity could tap into the pheromones being produced, but no one could touch their bond, making it one of the purest things.
If anything was wrong with Dove, May would know.
“How about I spend the day with Eveleen. We can get pampered by the palace staff!” The anxiety from their connection switched from nerves to joy as Dove used her other hand to feel their pup.
May wanted to protest that this was her first time off in a while and she would rather remain glued to Dove’s side, but she knew that if Dove remained by the other Queen’s side, nothing would happen to her Omega.
She had finally rewarded herself with a day off after Caleb and Zoe’s return from the ruins.
The group that was there seemed to be fighting amongst themselves after the death of their rebel, cause by another.
Half of the group was advocating for a violent demand while the other half just wanted an audience with the Queen.
Caleb, Zoe and her other guard members brought back the one’s advocating for a meeting, white arresting the others.
In the last week, Taylor had meet with more than a few of them to get their account on the rebellion.
She heard their demands for the lower taxes and explained her plan to pull from the money she had going toward weaponry.
May wasn’t particularly happy about it, but it helped soothed some of them.
As for the more violent offenders they were going to be put on trial while Taylor tried to gather more information on the rest of the rebel groups.
“Please, May. I do not think I could rest until I know what it’s like out there, worrying that Taylor would force you out there while I’m here.
I know Taylor. She’s our best friend, but if she needs you to step in, she will make you do it.
She has to as our Queen.” Dove’s pleas did not fall on empty ears.
This was what Taylor had brought up. It was her duty to the throne.
May’s boots were by the door, and her cape was hung up on the dresser—she would grab them on the way out.
“You are asking me, she was telling me. I will do this for you, Dovely, but when I come back, I need to rethink my place in the Queen’s army.
” May moved to stand between Dove’s parted thighs.
Leaning down, she sniffed her Omega’s head.
The sweet scent of her hair was reassuring enough for May. Dove was safe here.
“If you could tell one of the guards that I want to see Eveleen, then I will stay here and clean up.” Dove gathered up their dishes, setting them in the wash basin.
May looked around their living space—the furs were scattered everywhere, fresh ingredients were in the kitchen, and their clothing covered most of the bed.
She did not want Dove to exert herself, but she would welcome a clean space when she returned.
May nodded to Dove in acknowledgement. Once May gathered her boots and cape, she stood by the door.
“I love you, Dovely. I will see you all fresh and pampered when I get back.”
“I love you too, May. Bring me back some tea please.” May waved goodbye to her mate before leaving the room.
First, she went to her office to page Zoe and Kaden, then went up to a guard to relay Dove’s message before making her way to the stables.
She tried to fend off her worry by remembering who she was in love with.
Dove was the strongest person she knew. May knew with their mating, Dove’s pregnancy, and the fact she got to be with her sometimes clouded her judgment.
Dove was a powerful Omega. May could handle a day away from her mate.
She alerted her guards about the excursion without giving away too much, later finding herself nearing Reverwallow, with her two newest guard members.
Their energy had been off all morning, but she was too focused on Dove during the entire horse ride to care.
Her side of the bond was elated as she was with Eveleen, but May could not help but worry.
The last time she was here, the Queen was charged and her Omega ended up on the ground instead.
If Taylor’s audience meeting had had the desired impact, then May hoped word spread to the other rebel groups.
Even so, she was glad that Dove was at home, as May contemplated stepping down.
May slowed down to a trot as they neared the entrance gates.
“All right, we could be entering a potentially dangerous situation. I know you are both aware of the political tension and today we are going to be here as observers. This is not a mission from the Crown but be aware that some of the civilians could be on edge with our appearance.” Zoe nodded, clearly having seen some action in Luiza.
“Is that why we wore our casual dress, Captain?” Kaden’s brown hair flowed in the wind. She usually kept it up but it was down in the wind, while Zoe’s blonde strands were tucked tightly up.
“Yes, stay by my side.” They approached the gates, each dismounting their horses and encountering Reverwallow’s guard.
With their horses secured after some chatter with her guards, they started walking into town.
Since it was nearing dusk, most people were out.
May and her newest guard members moved towards the town’s center.
She noticed a few people that scowled at her and the royal symbol that locked her cape together.
Her two companions stood behind her as they walked smoothly through the streets.
“Are you with the royal guard?” A small Beta ran up to May, grabbing the end of her cape.
The little boy had blue eyes which twinkled up at her, and shaggy brown curls.
He couldn’t have been older than six or seven.
She bent down to touch the fake wooden sword he was holding.
He giggled when she recoiled as if the tip of the blade would hurt her.
She wondered where his parents were, but the town had always been safe, at least that’s what she knew.
“I am. Did you make this sword yourself?” For a wooden sword it looked pretty accurate.
He probably fought with the other young pups that were around.
Many people had stopped to watch their interaction.
She could see the market area indicating that there were even more people around this area.
She would have to be careful with what she said.
She had yet to see any signs of unease, but most people were on edge. She could feel it in the air.
“My older brother made it for me. He wanted to join the army when he turned of age.” The little boy’s scent shifted a bit to sadness. She didn’t want to ask about what happened to his brother, but she could sense it wasn’t good.
“May I see it?” She opened both her hands with her palms facing upwards.
He bit his lip softly before handing over what was probably his most prized possession.
He carefully placed the wood in her hands.
She could feel Zoe shifting closer to Kaden, but she refused to break the moment with this boy.
May turned the sword over in her hands. It had marks that could only be obtained from fighting, but some of the dents showed he was great at defense.
