The Acolyte (The Crimson Knot #2)

Chapter 1

Landen

The Knot was quiet in the way it always was before a scene settled into itself.

That low hum, that breath held just beneath the surface; Landen had known it for years, felt it vibrate through his chest like a second heartbeat. The murmur of distant conversation, the soft whisper of fabric against leather, the mournful slide of a cello from speakers hidden in the dark corners.

Light spilled in golden pools from the chandeliers, catching on polished hardwood and leaving the plush seating islands draped in intimate shadow.

He stood at the center of the main floor. The low circular platform was solid beneath his shoes. Familiar. He'd stood here a thousand times. A thousand scenes. A thousand bodies laid bare at his feet.

Warm leather. Clean sandalwood. The honeyed sweetness of beeswax candles burning low.

He breathed it in.

His hand settled against the small of the young man’s back.

Leo. His name was Leo. Landen wanted to remember that.

The men blurred sometimes, soft edges and eager eyes and the same trembling anticipation, but this one stood before him in simple dark linen pants and nothing else.

Smooth skin, pale in the warm light. Shoulders drawn up tight, fine tremors running through him like a plucked string.

Shallow breathing. Rapid. Fear and desire, all tangled together.

This was the part Landen knew. Had known so long it had worn grooves into him.

His voice came out calm. Measured. It cut through the anticipatory quiet like a blade wrapped in silk.

"Kneel."

A hesitation, a fraction of a second, and then Leo lowered himself to the padded leather.

"Good."

He'd said it ten thousand times. He wondered, distantly, if he'd ever meant it.

"Hands on your thighs. Palms up."

He reached for the blindfold. Simple black silk, cool and liquid against his fingers. He held it up so Leo could see it. "I'm going to put this on you now. It will help you focus.”

A nod. Jerky. Desperate.

Landen stepped behind him, lifted the silk and settled it over Leo's eyes, tied it securely at the base of his skull. Leo's breathing grew louder in the sudden dark.

"Breathe in." Landen's voice was slow and close beside his ear. "And out. Just follow me."

The cuffs were next; leather lined with lambswool, soft as a caress. He buckled them snug at each wrist, clipped the short, weighted chain between them, and settled Leo's bound hands back onto his thighs.

"You look perfect."

Leo's shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch.

Landen picked up the deerskin flogger. The falls were soft and supple, almost liquid in his hand. He drew the tips across Leo's shoulders, down the knobs of his spine, and felt Leo shiver beneath the touch.

He drew the flogger back. "I want you to count the strikes for me. Out loud. Can you do that?"

"Yes."

Thwap.

Soft against the meat of Leo's shoulder. Barely a sensation.

"One." A whisper.

"Good. Again."

He built a rhythm, soft, firm, soft again, mapping Leo's back with the falls, watching the skin pinken beautifully under the assault. Leo's counts grew steadier. His body began to sway, subtly seeking the impacts, giving himself over to it.

He set down the flogger.

The whip was smooth, braided, deceptively gentle in his hand. He let it drape over Leo's shoulders first. "This is different. It will be a line, not a spread. A sharp kiss."

The crack was startlingly loud.

The tip landed in a burning line across Leo's upper back. He cried out, sharp, pained, before his training caught up a heartbeat later. "E… eight!" His whole body had gone rigid, hands fisted on his thighs, knuckles white.

Landen stilled.

He watched the welt bloom. Saw Leo's shoulders locked tight, pleasure fled, only shock remaining. He discarded the whip without hesitation and knelt beside Leo on the platform, his hand finding the curve of his neck.

"That wasn't for you, was it?"

Leo shook his head. Tiny motion. Ashamed. "I'm sorry, I…"

"Hush." Landen's fingers tightened slightly. "No apologies for truth."

He smoothed his palm over the heated skin of Leo's back, avoided the stinging stripe, traced the soft pinkened places where the deerskin had kissed him. "You take the flogger beautifully." His voice dropped lower, rough velvet. "But the whip frightens you. It steals your focus. Your pleasure."

He leaned in, lips brushing the shell of Leo's ear. "I don't want to steal from you. I want to give to you."

"Do you trust me to give you what you need?"

A shaky inhale. "Yes."

"Then let go of the count. Let go of everything except my voice."

He turned Leo, arranged him over the low padded bench, bound wrists secured to the ring at the front, trousers peeled down just enough to bare the curve of his cheeks. His hand came down in a firm, open-palmed spank.

The crack echoed through the quiet. A deep pink handprint bloomed across pale skin.

Leo moaned, long and low, his back arching, pushing into the contact, seeking more.

Another spank. Other cheek.

"Ah... yes..."

"This is for the sound you made on seven." Smack. "So pretty."

Leo cried out. "Fuck!"

"This is for telling me the truth." Smack. "So brave."

A choked sob of pleasure, his fingers curling into the leather of the bench.

Landen spanked until the skin was hot and glowing beneath his palm, until Leo was a writhing, pleading mess; cock leaking against the padded leather, cries spilling out of him in a continuous, wanton melody.

The sounds filled the room.

They didn't touch him.

He registered that with a cold detachment that disturbed him more than the emptiness itself. The boy was gorgeous. Undone. Utterly at his mercy, put there with nothing but Landen's hands and voice and fifteen years of experience.

And he felt like a man reading from a script he'd long since memorized. Delivering lines correctly. Hitting every mark.

Performing.

He stopped.

Unclipped Leo's wrists. Turned the boneless boy over and knelt between his spread thighs. Leo's chest heaved, the blindfold askew, a dark tear-track cutting through the sweat at his temple.

Landen lowered his head and took Leo's weeping cock into his mouth. Swallowed him down to the root.

It was over in less than a minute.

Leo came with a shattered cry, his back bowing off the bench, hands fisting in Landen's hair. Landen took it all; the bitter salt on his tongue, the violent tremors, the raw and total surrender.

He pulled back. Wiped his mouth. Rose.

The blanket was soft. He wrapped it around Leo's shaking shoulders, guided him to the divan, brought water, murmured the aftercare.

You were perfect. So responsive. I'm proud of you; his hands gentle as he blotted the sweat from Leo's forehead.

The script. That word again, following him like a shadow he couldn't outpace.

Leo looked up at him. Eyes wrecked. Worshipful. "Thank you."

"Rest now." Landen said it warmly. Said it perfectly. Hated himself a little for how easy it was.

He sat beside Leo until the boy's breathing evened and his face smoothed into sleep. And felt the full weight of what he'd done settle over him.

Not guilt. Nothing as clean as guilt. Something murkier; the particular self-disgust of a man who has delivered something exquisite and knows, with absolute certainty, that his heart was never in the room.

Leo had given him everything. Every tremble, every cry, every shuddering breath.

Landen had given him a lie.

He stayed until Leo stirred and said he was good. Then he rose, quiet as smoke, and walked away.

The taste of another man's release was still sharp on his tongue. The echoes of pleasured cries still hung in his ears. His own blood still hummed with the play.

But it was just noise. Sensation without weight. Technically perfect and utterly hollow, like a song played in an empty concert hall.

He leaned against the wall in the corridor and pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes.

What are you doing?

The question arrived flat, without inflection.

What are you doing, and when did you start doing it, and why can't you stop?

He eventually found a seat at the bar, a long slab of black stone, lit from beneath like banked embers, and watched the amber liquid in his glass catch the low light. He didn't remember ordering. But there it was. Neat. Top-shelf. Waiting.

He lifted it. Let the first sip sit on his tongue.

Oak. Vanilla. Heat.

He catalogued it like evidence, as if naming every sensation precisely enough might locate the place where feeling had gone.

Around him, the lounge held that particular after-hours hush.

In a curtained alcove to his left, a man laughed.

Low, exhausted, genuinely happy. The submissive in his lap burrowed closer, face pressed into the curve of his neck.

Across the way, a Dominant's hand moved in slow, rhythmic strokes through their partner's hair.

Eyes closed. Lips parted. Breathing in time with that gentle touch.

Landen watched them.

He recognized it, the ease of it. The specific, unperformable quality of two people who had found their exact fit in each other.

He looked away before it could settle into him properly.

His own reflection stared back from the dark mirror of the bar top. Blond hair, every strand in place. Jaw sharp. Shirt still crisp at the collar, not a wrinkle, not a crease.

He let his face go slack.

No one noticed. No one ever noticed. His posture stayed impeccable, his expression settling into something readable as contemplative ease.

But inside, a different accounting was taking place.

Quiet and merciless. The kind of reckoning that came in the small hours when the performance had finally run out of audience.

He was good at this. Exceptionally good. A lifetime of reading rooms, managing bodies, navigating the language of dominance and surrender had made him something close to masterful.

Mastery, he was discovering, was its own kind of cage.

He could do all of it perfectly; had just proven it.

But Landen had only been going through the motions.

And he was so tired of it.

His mind drifted the way it did now, lately; slipping its moorings when he wasn't paying attention, reaching toward something he couldn't name or define or touch no matter how far he stretched.

Not the pliancy of a well-trained submissive. Not the performance of surrender, beautiful though it could be.

Something else.

Softness.

The kind of yielding that came from trust so deep it didn't need to brace for impact.

A body that would curve into his not because he'd commanded it, but because it wanted to be there.

Because his arms were the safest place in the world.

Warmth that wasn't a reward to be earned but a refuge freely offered.

Someone who would need him to slow down; not from fear, not from overwhelm, but from a wanting so profound it sought to stretch every second into eternity.

Someone who would look at him and see him. Not the mask. Not the flawless, impenetrable Dom who always knew exactly what to do.

Him.

The ache was physical. A hollow, dragging weight behind his sternum, in the space where his heart kept beating its steady, mechanical rhythm.

He finished the bourbon in one swallow.

The burn was good. Concrete. Real in a way the last two hours hadn't been.

He set the glass down. Soft click of crystal against stone. When he lifted his gaze, the mask was back in place; easy, mild, pleasantly neutral, the faintest suggestion of a smile at the corners of his mouth.

He stood. Nodded once to the shadow by the door and stepped out into the night.

The transition was always jarring. One moment, the warm weighted hush of bodies and breath and leather. The next, the city; distant sirens, the diesel grumble of a late-night bus, wind slicing down the sidewalk.

He pulled his coat tighter. Fine wool. Cashmere-soft.

But the cold was inside him. Had been for longer than he wanted to admit. Long enough that he'd stopped noticing it, the way you stopped noticing a sound that never ceased.

He walked. His footsteps echoed on slick pavement, the street stretching empty in both directions, reflecting amber streetlight in fractured pools.

The feeling followed him. Not desire; desire was a flame he knew how to spark and bank, how to feed or starve at will. This was something else.

An absence.

A shape where something should be, but wasn't.

He reached his car and stood beside it, keys in hand, not moving. The metal bit cold against his palm.

Whatever he'd been reaching for, in the dim light of the club, in the press of bodies and the rhythm of surrender, wasn't there. Had never been there.

And the most terrible part, the part that settled into his bones like frost, was that he already knew it never would be.

Not here. Not like this. Not anymore.
