The beach is warm and the water is loud and Nessa's phone is playing a video neither of us went looking for.
Gideon, exiled. Lilian, dead in her cell. Suicide, the report says.
I look at Cassian.
He arranges his face into an expression of complete innocence. "I didn't do anything. Her choice."
Sure.
I look back at the water. At my mother beside me, her feet in the sand. At the curve of my stomach, still small enough to hide if I wanted to.
Whatever happened in that city, in those rooms —it has nothing to do with me anymore.
Not even a little.
