Chapter 21- The Battle At The Quarry

For one frozen moment, the battlefield went completely silent.

Moonlight poured over the abandoned quarry, turning the jagged stone and scattered debris into a silver-washed landscape of shadows. The wind whispered through the trees above the ridge, stirring loose leaves across the ground.

And in the center of it all...

Emily stood in her true wolf form.

Silver.

Not gray.

Not pale.

But brilliant silver fur that shimmered like liquid moonlight beneath the sky.

Every wolf present stared.

Even the warriors already mid-shift had paused.

Marcus Vale's deep, amused laugh echoed across the quarry.

"Beautiful," the Bloodfang Alpha said.

Jay's black wolf stepped forward immediately, placing himself between Emily and Marcus. His massive body radiated protective fury as he lowered his head in warning.

Marcus didn't seem impressed.

"Oh, calm down, Carter," he said lightly, pacing forward in his dark wolf form. "I'm not going to steal her in the first five seconds."

Jay's answer was a bone-deep growl that rolled through the quarry like thunder.

Emily felt the vibration through the ground.

Her wolf responded instantly.

The silver wolf inside her rose taller.

Stronger.

The power she felt in this form was nothing like the unstable bursts she'd experienced before. It flowed through her muscles like electricity, sharpening her senses until every heartbeat on the battlefield felt clear.

She could hear Rowan's breathing.

Owen's heartbeat.

Even the slow rhythm of Marcus's pulse.

Her wolf snarled softly.

Fight.

The tension snapped.

Marcus lunged first.

The Bloodfang Alpha shot forward with terrifying speed, aiming directly for Jay's throat.

Jay met him head-on.

The two massive wolves collided in the center of the quarry with a crack of bone and fury. Their bodies slammed together so hard that dust and loose gravel exploded outward across the ground.

The rest of the battlefield erupted instantly.

Blackridge warriors surged forward.

Bloodfang wolves met them with equal ferocity.

Growls filled the air.

Claws tore through fur.

The sound of battle echoed against the quarry walls.

Emily didn't hesitate.

Her silver wolf launched forward.

The first Bloodfang wolf rushed her from the left, clearly thinking she was the weakest target on the field.

A mistake.

Emily twisted mid-charge, her enhanced speed catching the attacker off guard. Her claws struck first, slicing across the wolf's shoulder with surprising force.

The Bloodfang warrior yelped and stumbled backward.

Emily barely registered the movement.

Her senses were blazing.

She could see every shift of muscle in her opponent's body before he moved.

Her wolf lunged again.

This time she knocked him completely off his feet.

The wolf rolled across the gravel with a snarl before scrambling away, suddenly cautious.

Emily didn't chase him.

Her attention snapped back toward the center of the battlefield.

Jay and Marcus were still locked in combat.

Their fight was brutal.

The two Alphas moved faster than most wolves could track. Their bodies crashed against each other again and again, claws striking, teeth snapping as they fought for dominance.

Marcus was strong.

Stronger than Emily expected.

But Jay was relentless.

The black wolf drove forward with controlled fury, forcing Marcus backward toward the edge of the quarry.

Nearby, Rowan was battling two Bloodfang wolves at once, holding them off with sharp, efficient strikes while Owen fought beside him.

Emily darted toward them instinctively.

Another Bloodfang wolf lunged toward Rowan from behind.

Emily hit the attacker mid-air.

The impact sent both wolves crashing across the dirt.

The enemy wolf snarled as he scrambled up, but Emily was already moving again.

Her silver claws flashed.

The Bloodfang wolf retreated with a wounded growl.

Rowan glanced toward her briefly.

Even in the middle of battle, his surprise was obvious.

Emily almost laughed.

If he thought that was impressive...

He hadn't seen anything yet.

Across the quarry, Marcus suddenly broke free from Jay's grip.

The Bloodfang Alpha leapt backward, landing lightly on a rocky ledge above the battlefield.

"Enough," Marcus called.

The command echoed across the clearing.

The Bloodfang wolves instantly began retreating toward the edges of the quarry.

Blackridge warriors slowed but didn't pursue.

Jay stepped forward, his massive black form tense with barely restrained rage.

Marcus shifted back into human form.

The move was deliberate.

Controlled.

A show of confidence.

He brushed dirt from his coat as he looked down at the battlefield.

Then his eyes settled on Emily.

The silver wolf.

His smile returned.

"Well," Marcus said calmly, "that answers that question."

Jay shifted back to human form as well.

"You came for confirmation," Jay said coldly.

Marcus nodded.

"And now I have it."

Emily stepped forward, shifting back into human form herself. The sudden loss of fur made the night air feel cold against her skin, but she barely noticed.

"You started a war for that?" she demanded.

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"A war?"

He gestured around the battlefield.

"This was barely a skirmish."

Jay's voice dropped dangerously.

"You crossed into my territory."

Marcus shrugged.

"And you defended it. Congratulations."

Emily clenched her fists.

"You're insane."

Marcus's gaze softened slightly.

"No."

He stepped back toward the forest edge.

"I'm patient."

Emily's stomach twisted.

Marcus's smile widened.

"Enjoy your victory tonight."

Jay's voice hardened.

"You're not leaving."

Marcus laughed.

"Oh, I am."

Behind him, the Bloodfang wolves had already vanished into the forest.

Marcus paused at the edge of the trees.

Then looked back one final time.

Directly at Emily.

"You run well, silver wolf," he said quietly.

Emily's wolf stirred.

"Next time..."

Marcus's smile turned sharp.

"...I won't be testing you."

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

The forest swallowed him whole.

And the battlefield fell silent.
