The Wild Awakening

Kieran POV

I held her, pressing my lips to her wet temple, my own heart hammering a chaotic rhythm against my ribs. I was in physical agony from my own unmet need, but seeing her completely soft and safe in my arms was a profound, grounding kind of peace.

I waited for her breathing to slow, for the tremors to subside.

But they didn’t.

Instead of cooling down, the skin pressed flush against my chest felt like it was radiating heat from a furnace. Aurora shifted against me, a low, guttural whine tearing from her throat that sounded far more animalistic than human.

Then, the scent hit me.

It wasn’t a subtle shift. It was an explosion.

The fragrant lavender steam of the bathroom was violently overpowered by a fragrance so thick, so impossibly sweet and primal, that it literally made my vision blur at the edges. It was the scent of crushed silver-leaf, wild honey, and pure, raw pheromones.

I froze, the blood roaring in my ears. I knew that scent. Every male was biologically wired to recognize that scent from miles away, let alone when the source of it was sitting completely naked on their lap.

“Kieran,” she whimpered, thrashing her head against my chest, her hands clenching weakly in my hair. “I’m so hot. Make it stop... please, I feel like I am on fire.”

A heavy, feverish flush was rapidly spreading across her chest and up her neck. Her eyes, when she managed to crack them open, were hazy, completely blown out, and completely wild.

The realization slammed into me with the force of a falling mountain.

The trauma and the profound isolation of the Forbidden Lands had likely suppressed her biology for years.

Her body had been in survival mode, shutting down all non-essential functions just to keep her alive.

But the sudden, violent introduction of the mating bond, the safety of my territory, and the explosive trigger of her first climax had acted as a biological catalyst.

Her system wasn’t just waking up; it was overcompensating for years of dormancy.

She wasn’t just aroused anymore.

Aurora was going straight into Heat. And this one was the most overwhelming one I had ever sensed.

Shit. Shit, shit, shit. The curse tumbled from my lips in a ragged whisper.

Aurora was practically burning alive in my arms, her skin radiating a feverish heat that made the hot bathwater feel cool by comparison.

The scent of wild honey and silver-leaf was no longer just sweet; it was a physical weight in the air, a suffocatingly thick blanket of pheromones that was driving my wolf absolutely insane.

Suddenly, a sharp, urgent spike of pressure hit my temples. The pack link.

‘Kieran.’ Silas’s voice echoed in my head, tight, strained, and laced with absolute alarm. ‘Alpha, tell me I’m losing my mind. Tell me that scent flooding the upper levels isn’t what I think it is.’

My stomach dropped. The fact that Silas was affected by her scent from completely different quarters, especially considering he was a happily mated wolf himself, spoke volumes about the sheer, apocalyptic magnitude of Aurora’s pheromones.

If Silas could feel it, every unmated male in the castle was currently having their minds scrambled.

‘You’re not losing your mind,’ I gritted back, tightening my hold on the thrashing, whimpering girl in my lap. ‘She’s gone into Heat. Full, sudden onset.’

I heard Silas curse colorfully through the mental tether. ‘How? She was fine thirty minutes ago! Did you—’

‘No!’ I growled, my protective instincts flaring defensively.

‘It is probably her biology that has been suppressed in survival mode for eight years in the Forbidden Lands. The mating bond, the sudden safety of the territory, and... well, she just had her first release. It acted as a catalyst. The dam didn’t just break, Silas. It exploded.’

A heavy, stunned pause hung in my mind. Then, the Beta kicked into gear, his tactical mind overriding his shock.

‘Understood. I’m locking down your entire wing immediately.

No unmated males within a mile of your quarters.

I’ll have Torin help me stand guard at the corridor entrance, and Lyra will leave food and water at the outer doors.

You’re on your own, brother. May the Moon give you strength.’

The link snapped shut.

I was going to need a lot more than strength.

“Kieran... please,” Aurora sobbed, her hips rolling blindly against my thigh. Her hands scrambled for purchase on my wet shoulders, her eyes hazy and entirely consumed by the fever. She was in agony, her body demanding a claiming she didn’t fully understand.

My heart ached for her. This was so far from ideal.

I had wanted to court her properly. I had wanted to give her romance, soft words, and the time she needed to heal from the trauma of the Forbidden Lands before we took this step.

I wanted her to be fully present, not drowning in a biological fever. I had wanted her to be more prepared.

But biology didn’t care about my plans, and it certainly didn’t care about royal etiquette. My only priority right now was her. I had to take care of her, ensure her needs were met, and guide her safely through the storm that was currently ravaging her system.

A standard werewolf heat could last anywhere from a few days to a week. But a heat triggered after years of dormancy? Fueled by suppressed Argent magic and a fresh Alpha mating bond?

I swallowed hard, feeling my fangs lengthen as my own control began to violently fray at the edges. Judging by the blinding intensity of her scent, this wasn’t going to be a quick, three-day fever. We were looking at two, maybe even three weeks of absolute, feral isolation.

“Alright,” I murmured, wrapping my arms securely around her and standing up, lifting her dripping, burning body out of the water. “I’ve got you. I’m right here, and I’m going to take care of you.”

I grabbed a massive, plush towel with one hand, wrapping it hastily around her shivering frame, and carried my mate out of the bathroom and toward the massive bed waiting in the center of the room. The real challenge was just beginning.

Aurora POV

My mind was a fractured, hazy mess. One moment I had been floating in the blissful, exhausting aftermath of a pleasure so intense it had literally blinded me, and the next, my blood had turned to liquid fire.

The transition from the steaming bathroom to the cool air of the bedchamber should have been a relief, but the air against my wet skin felt like a physical abrasion.

Kieran laid me gently onto the center of the massive bed, the dark, plush furs swallowing my shivering frame as the heavy towel fell away.

“Kieran...” I gasped, my hands tangling blindly in the silk sheets. My vision was swimming, the edges of the room blurring into shadows as a suffocating, desperate ache clawed its way through my lower half. “What’s happening? Why does it hurt?”

“Shh, you’re okay. You’re safe,” his voice was a low, resonant rumble that vibrated straight through the bond, acting as the only anchor in the chaotic storm of my senses.

He climbed onto the mattress beside me, his large, calloused hands smoothing the damp white hair away from my flushed face. His golden eyes were pitch-black with his own barely restrained feral need, but his touch was agonizingly gentle.

“You’re in heat, Aurora,” he murmured, pressing his cool forehead against my burning one. “Your body is finally waking up.”

Heat. The words cut through the feverish fog in my brain, bringing a sudden, clarifying wave of realization.

Of course. In a normal life, a female werewolf experienced her first heat around her eighteenth birthday, settling into a more or less yearly cycle after that.

It was basic biology. Werewolves weren’t prudes; sex was a completely natural, celebrated part of our existence, and it wasn’t at all unusual for wolves to have had other sexual partners before finding their Chosen or Fated mates.

But I hadn’t had a normal life. I had spent almost half my life in survival mode, my body locking down every non-essential biological function just to keep my heart beating.

Now, well-fed on the Alpha’s presence, secure in a safe territory, and triggered by my first climax... the dam hadn’t just broken. It had completely obliterated.

A new, terrifying thought pierced through the haze.

“My scent,” I panicked, my hands flying up to grip his broad shoulders. I knew exactly what an unmarked female in heat smelled like. It was a biological distress beacon, a siren song broadcasting to every unmated male for miles. “Kieran, the guards, the castle…”

“Silas has already locked down the entire wing,” Kieran promised, his voice taking on a dark, violently possessive edge.

He leaned down, his nose brushing the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.

“No one is coming near you. And once we get through this heat and you’re marked by me. It will concentrate, and it shouldn’t leak out like this next time.”

“Mark me,” I whimpered, the words an involuntary plea. My hips arched up off the mattress entirely on their own, seeking the heavy, solid friction of his body. “Please.”

Kieran let out a ragged groan, his jaw clenching as he forced himself to pull back just an inch. He looked down at my writhing body, the war between his Alpha instincts and his restraint playing out plainly on his face.

“I have to prepare you first,” he rasped, his gaze dropping to where my thighs were trembling against the dark furs. “You are untouched. And I am... too large to just take you in the middle of a fever frenzy. If I don’t stretch you properly, I will tear you apart, and I refuse to hurt you.”

He shifted his weight, moving between my knees. He parted my legs gently but firmly, exposing me completely to his heated gaze.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart” he whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion as he coated his fingers in the heavy, slick evidence of my own arousal.

He slid one finger inside me, slow and deliberate, before adding a second.

“I wanted to court you. I wanted our first time to be slow, romantic, and entirely on your terms. I am so sorry we have to rush this.”

I gasped, my spine bowing off the bed as his fingers began to move, stretching the tight, aching muscles of my core with a relentless, agonizingly good rhythm. He hit a sensitive bundle of nerves, and a loud, melodic moan tore from my throat.

“Don’t be,” I panted, opening my eyes to look at the beautiful, deadly King who had saved me from the ruins. I reached out, tracing the sharp line of his jaw. “I don’t want slow, Kieran. I just want you.”

He leaned into my touch, turning his head to press a fervent, branding kiss to the palm of my hand.

“I swear to the Moon,” Kieran vowed, his pitch-black eyes blazing as he slid a third finger inside me, pushing me closer to the edge of madness, “I will spend the rest of our lives making this up to you.”
