Into the Fire
Kieran POV
The delicate, floral warmth of the greenhouse seemed to fade the moment the words left my mouth, replaced by the heavy, familiar mantle of my title.
I held my hand out to Aurora, watching as she slipped her incredibly soft hand into my own.
As she stood up beside me, I felt a distinct, remarkable shift in her posture.
The profound vulnerability she had just displayed with my mother—the raw, tearful grief for her lost family and the fragile, beautiful acceptance of her new one—was carefully and deliberately tucked away.
It was like watching a blade being drawn from a velvet sheath.
Her spine straightened, her slender shoulders squaring with the regal, unyielding grace of a born queen.
I reached out through our newly forged mating bond, expecting to find at least a flicker of anxiety or apprehension about facing the most dominant and overbearing wolves in Valdora.
Instead, the tether between us hummed with a cool, sharp clarity.
There was absolutely no fear in her mind.
There was no nervousness. She was entirely focused, her eyes hardening into chips of polished gemstone.
The survivor of the Forbidden Lands had merged seamlessly with the Princess of the Argent Kingdom, and the result was a deeply terrifying, magnificent she-wolf who was more than ready for a political bloodbath.
My chest swelled with a roaring, undeniable pride. Let the old lords try to intimidate her, I thought grimly. They had absolutely no idea what kind of woman they were about to corner.
As we stepped out of the glass conservatory and back onto the manicured stone paths of the royal gardens, I tapped into the pack link. I cast my mental voice out, seeking the familiar, steadfast presence of my right hand.
‘Silas,’ I projected, keeping my tone casual and brotherly, a stark contrast to the formal Alpha commands I usually issued during emergencies.
The connection flared to life instantly.
‘I’m here, Kai. Is the family reunion over?
Are you two ready to finally come down and properly greet the rest of the gang?
Kael is literally vibrating through the floorboards.’
I couldn’t suppress the fond, amused smirk that tugged at the corner of my mouth.
This morning, Silas had been the first to welcome us back to the land of the living, leaning casually against the stone corridor outside our chambers with that signature, crooked grin of his.
He had instantly treated Aurora with the absolute devotion and respect of a Luna, completely bypassing the archaic court formalities and putting her feral nerves at ease.
‘The reunion with the inner circle is going to have to wait a little longer, brother,’ I linked back, my amusement hardening into a cold, tactical edge.
‘It seems the guards were rather enthusiastic about reporting the end of our seclusion. The council has demanded an immediate audience, and they are already gathering in the chamber.’
I felt Silas’s profound groan echo through our mental tether. ‘The council? Today? They couldn’t give you twenty-four hours of peace before throwing grain tithes and border disputes at your head?’
‘They aren’t here for border disputes. They are here because they heard about Aurora, and they want to know exactly who their Alpha has claimed. I need you to meet us at the Council chamber.’
‘On my way,’ he responded instantly, all traces of his previous playfulness vanishing, replaced by the crisp, disciplined focus of the Vanguard.
It was customary for the Beta to stand at the Alpha’s right hand during these specific proceedings.
The council was a complex, fragile ecosystem of massive egos and ancient bloodlines.
Not every single seat at that massive obsidian table was filled by one of the ruling Alphas from Valdora’s fifteen territories, but every single pack was fiercely represented, either by their respective Alpha or by a seasoned,
highly influential elder appointed to speak for their region when the Alpha was unavailable.
The elders are traditional, they were stubborn, and they were entirely obsessed with lineage and control.
They wanted a tractable, highly political Luna who would smile pretty and secure their alliances. I was about to walk in there with a woman who had solo-killed a Shadow-Stag and survived a genocide.
I looked down at Aurora as we crossed the threshold back into the heavy, torch-lit stone corridors of the royal keep. Her steps were silent, her grip on my hand firm and steady.
“Silas is meeting us there,” I murmured, my thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. “The lords are going to demand answers, my love. They might try to pry into your past, and they will try to test your strength.”
She didn’t miss a beat. She didn’t even look up at me, simply keeping her eyes fixed dead ahead on the heavy oak doors of the council chamber looming at the end of the hall.
“Let them try,” she replied, her voice smooth and lethally calm. “I have dealt with worse monsters in the dark, Kieran. I can handle a few dominant wolves.”
I let out a low, vibrating chuckle, my wolf howling in absolute approval.
“That’s my mate,” I rumbled, pushing the heavy doors open with my free hand.

Aurora POV
The transition from the sunlit, floral warmth of the royal gardens to the corridors of the palace felt like stepping between two entirely different worlds. The air grew instantly cooler, carrying the ancient, heavy scent of polished iron, old tapestries, and stone.
I didn’t flinch at the overwhelming wall of Alpha scent looming ahead.
Eight years of hunting monsters in the ruins of my homeland had burned away any capacity I had for being easily intimidated.
Instead, I let my spine straighten, rolling my shoulders back as I allowed the hyper-vigilant instincts of the survivor to seamlessly intertwine with the regal composure my mother had drilled into me before my world was turned upside down.
My eyes locked onto the massive, iron-banded oak doors at the far end of the hallway.
Kieran was a solid, immovable mountain of heat and absolute authority beside me.
His large, hand enveloped mine, his thumb resting possessively over my knuckles.
Through the shimmering tether of our mating bond, I could feel the low, continuous rumble of his wolf.
It was a dark, lethal frequency, a warning broadcast to anyone who dared to challenge what was his.
Yet, whenever that possessive energy brushed against my consciousness, it softened into a profound, grounding warmth.
A few paces behind us, the rhythmic, unhurried click of Seraphina’s heels echoed sharply against the flagstones.
Her presence at our backs was a tactical masterpiece.
She wasn’t just Kieran’s mother; she was the former Luna Queen of Valdora, a woman who had helped command this very place for decades.
Having her shadow our steps was a silent, impenetrable wall of endorsement.
Any lord who thought to drive a wedge between Kieran and I would find their efforts utterly obliterated before they even spoke a word.
As we neared the final intersection before the chamber, a lean figure peeled himself away from the shadowed alcove beside the doors.
Silas.
Kieran's Beta was completely devoid of the easy-going, crooked grin he had worn when he first greeted us outside our bedchamber earlier this morning.
The relaxed, brotherly warmth he shared with Kieran in private had been thoroughly submerged beneath the icy, disciplined armor of his station.
He was dressed impeccably in dark, tailored leathers that bore the silver crest of the Valdoran Vanguard, standing with his hands clasped behind his back, his posture radiating a coiled, predatory tension.
As we approached, Silas bowed his head, a sharp, deeply respectful dip of his chin directed first at Kieran, and then, with equal reverence, at me.
“Alpha. Luna,” Silas murmured, his voice pitched low enough that it wouldn’t carry through the heavy oak doors. He shot a brief, affectionate glance over my shoulder. “Lady Seraphina.”
“Report, Silas,” Kieran commanded, his voice dropping into the smooth, frictionless baritone of the Alpha King. It was a tone that demanded instant, unquestioning obedience.
“They are all here, and they are practically foaming at the mouth with impatience,” Silas replied, his dark eyes flashing with a mixture of annoyance and grim anticipation.
“All fifteen territories are accounted for, and we have a much higher turnout of actual Pack Alphas than usual. Most didn’t even bother sending an Elder to proxy for them today as they usually do. They are seated at the obsidian table,
with their betas standing at attention behind their respective chairs. Total head count is exactly thirty, not including the royal guards stationed at the perimeter.”
I let out a slow, measured breath, cataloging the information. Thirty powerful, territorial males, all of them deeply entrenched in the archaic politics of a kingdom that hadn’t seen a true war in a decade.
“What is the mood in the room?” Seraphina asked from behind me, her voice cutting through the chilled air with aristocratic precision.
Silas grimaced slightly. “A volatile mix of outrage and intense curiosity. The scent of the heat lifting was the catalyst, but the rumor mill has been working overtime since three weeks ago. They know the King brought a she-wolf back from the Forbidden Lands.
The older traditionalists are already muttering about rogue bloodlines and the necessity of a ‘proper’ political vetting.”
Silas paused, his gaze shifting directly to me, a fierce, protective loyalty burning in his chest.
“They are preparing an interrogation, my Luna. They want to expose whatever cracks they can find.”
“Let them search,” I replied smoothly, my voice eerily calm as I met the Beta’s intense stare with a soft smile.
I felt Kieran’s hand tighten around mine, a surge of fierce, answering pride flooding our bond.
“A crack only matters if the foundation is weak. Mine was forged in the Argent Kingdom and through war and survival.”
A feral, thoroughly delighted smirk finally broke through Silas’s professional facade. “Goddess,” he muttered, shaking his head. “I am going to enjoy watching you tear them to shreds.”
Kieran stepped forward, releasing my hand only so he could place his palm flat against the center of the massive oak doors.
His broad shoulders blocked out the torchlight, his aura expanding until it filled the entire hallway.
A suffocating, terrifying wave of Alpha dominance that made the air itself feel heavy and difficult to breathe.
“Take your place, Beta,” Kieran ordered softly, though the command vibrated the very stones beneath our feet.
Silas instantly stepped to Kieran’s right, his posture snapping back into rigid, lethal attention. I moved to Kieran’s left, standing tall and utterly unbothered by the crushing weight of my mate’s power. Behind me, Seraphina stood in perfect, silent alignment.
“Ready?” Kieran murmured, shooting a sideways glance at me, his dark eyes blazing with an unholy fire.
I gave him a single, definitive nod.
"Ready."
