Second Wind

Aurora POV

From my vantage point on the watchtower, I could see the exact moment the dragon chose its target. A terrified woman was huddled on the cobblestones. She was trembling violently, her arms wrapped tightly around two small, whimpering pups, using her own body as a futile shield against the inevitable.

Deep within the the dragon’s throat, a sickening orange-black glow began to build. The corrosive fire.

I launched myself off the watchtower, calling upon my magic to violently accelerate my descent. If there was one thing I remembered from surviving the Forbidden Lands, it was that dragons were reptilian in nature. They absolutely despised the cold.

As I closed the distance, I manifested a barrage of ice arrows in the air around me. With a vicious mental shove, I sent them rocketing directly at the dragon.

The ice shattered against its iron-like scales with deafening cracks, but the freeze of the magic did exactly what I needed it to. The dragon jerked violently in surprise. Its jaws snapped shut, causing the building corrosive fire to choke and turn into a plume of foul black smoke in its mouth.

I hit the cobblestones sliding several feet to position myself directly between the dragon and the civilians.

My wolf’s let out a deafening, aggressive bark. The woman didn’t need to be reminded twice; she scooped up her pups and scrambled desperately away from the dragon.

The dragon recovered quickly. It shook its head, shaking off the shards of frost, and glared down at me.

I didn’t give it a chance to act. I whipped up a cyclone of freezing wind, funneling a blinding storm of ice dust and hail directly into its sensitive eyes. ’Come at me, you overgrown lizard’, my wolf purred with a feral confidence.

The dragon let out a soul-shredding shriek that shattered the nearby tavern windows and lunged, its jaws snapping the space where I had been standing a millisecond prior.

As I approached the crater where the outer walls used to stand, the dragon lunged again, its jaws snapping shut with the force of a falling guillotine.

I didn’t break stride. I summoned a concentrated burst of wind magic beneath my back paws, propelling myself forward in a massive leap.

I soared over the jagged rubble, twisting mid-air to land perfectly on the crumbled surface of a collapsed guard tower.

Using my momentum, I rebounded off the ruined building, rocketing into the air just as a stream of corrosive fire bathed the spot I had just occupied.

’Missed me, you stupid lizard,’ my wolf purred.

I hit the ground rolling as the tree line finally rushed up to meet me. The forest bordering Valdora was more my element. The dense canopy and towering, thick-trunked oaks were a nightmare for a massive, winged behemoth, but for a smaller, magically enhanced wolf? It was an absolute playground.

The dragon smashed through the tree line like a battering ram, splintering trees into kindling. It shrieked again, clearly furious.

I didn’t give it a second to adjust. I drove off the side of a massive boulder, launching upward to snatch the lowest branch of a nearby tree.

Claws bit into bark as I scrambled higher, then I hurled myself back just as the dragon’s tail shattered the trunk into splinters.

Mid-air, I summoned another volley of jagged ice spears, sending them raining down onto the beast’s face.

They shattered against its scales, causing little physical damage but delivering a blinding, freezing sting that made it thrash in pure, unadulterated fury. It abandoned any thought of the city. Its eyes were locked entirely on me. I was a glowing white gnat that it desperately wanted to crush.

I zig-zagged through the thick underbrush, keeping my movements erratic and utterly unpredictable. I used localized bursts of wind to change my trajectory mid-leap, bouncing off tree trunks and sheer rock faces to stay exactly one step ahead of its snapping jaws and breath attack.

I was burning through my stamina, but I only needed to hold its aggro for a few more minutes.

Finally, I felt it. A heavy, rhythmic vibration in the earth that had absolutely nothing to do with the dragon chasing me.

Then, my mate bond flared to life, burning with a dark, suffocating wave of protective rage.

‘Drop, Aurora!’ Kieran’s voice thundered into my mind, a lethal, absolute command.

I didn’t hesitate. I threw all my weight forward, sliding on my belly through the dirt and dead leaves just as a massive, towering blur of black fur and fangs vaulted entirely over my head.

Kieran hit the dragon like a falling meteor.

The sheer force of my mate’s momentum stalled the beast’s charge entirely. Kieran’s massive jaws clamped down with bone-crushing force right at the joint of the dragon’s neck and shoulder.

Before the dragon could even shriek in surprise, the forest erupted.

The tree line behind me literally exploded with motion.

Silas, a dark grey phantom of lethal efficiency, surged past me, sliding low under the dragon’s snapping jaws to slash at its underbelly.

Seconds later, Alpha Torrance, Garrick, Kaelen, and dozens of the most terrifying, battle-hardened warriors in Valdora poured into the clearing we had arrived at.

It was a tidal wave of pure, synchronized destruction.

Around sixty wolves swarmed the massive dragon.

There was no hesitation, no fear. Thanks to the royal Pack Link connecting their minds, they moved as a single, flawless organism of violence.

They weren’t just attacking; they were systematically dismantling the dragon that had dared to threaten their kingdom.

I scrambled back to my paws, shaking the dirt from my coat, my chest heaving as I watched my mate and his warriors tear into the beast.

Kieran POV

The beast thrashed violently, its iron-hard scales grinding against my fangs, but I anchored my massive weight, refusing to yield an inch.

Below me, the clearing was a maelstrom of fur, fangs, and tactical brutality. But even amidst the chaotic blur of several dozen wolves tearing into the dragon, my awareness was tethered entirely to the blinding white streak weaving through the carnage.

Aurora didn’t retreat to the safety of the tree line. She threw herself right back into the center of the slaughter. Of course she did. So I did the only thing I could do in this situation, fight alongside her.

We moved like two halves of the same soul.

It was a flawless, terrifyingly lethal dance that we had first discovered when we faced the Aberration at River’s Edge.

We fell into absolute, unspoken synchronization.

When the dragon bucked, trying to throw me from its neck, Aurora was already there, summoning a concentrated blast of icy wind magic to slow its movements.

Because she hadn’t been officially initiated into the pack or kingdom yet, she couldn’t access the Pack Links. She couldn’t hear the tactical commands I was barking to the others. Her voice existed solely in the private, sacred sanctuary of our mate bond.

‘Kaelen is overextending on the right flank!’ she projected sharply into my mind, her jaws snapping shut on a vulnerable joint near the beast’s wing. ‘It’s drawing a breath for a breathattack!’

‘Kaelen, Silas, fall back!’ I roared instantly through the Pack Link. The two massive wolves aborted their strikes and dove into the brush a fraction of a second before a sickening wave of corrosive, black fire bathed the earth where they had just stood.

We were winning. The dragon was bleeding heavy, viscous pools of black ichor, its remaining wing shredded beyond repair by Torrance and Garrick.

But then the sky above the canopy suddenly tore open with a sound like grinding metal and thunder. The shadows over the clearing deepened unnaturally, completely blotting out the midday sun.

I ripped my jaws free and looked up just in time to see the forest canopy literally explode inward. A second Corrupted Dragon, this one entirely uninjured and radiating a blistering, suffocating heat, dropped from the clouds like a falling mountain.

It hit the ground with enough force to send a shockwave of displaced dirt and pulverized timber ripping through the clearing.

Absolute chaos erupted.

We had been entirely focused on executing the killing blow on the first dragon. The arrival of a second completely shattered our formation.

Through the dust, I saw a younger Beta from the Stormwatch Pack stumbling backward, deafened and disoriented by the concussive landing. The second dragon didn’t hesitate. Its eyes locked onto the vulnerable wolf, and it whipped its massive tail through the air with devastating speed.

The Beta didn’t even see it coming. And because Aurora couldn’t use the Pack Link to warn him, she did the only thing she could.

She threw herself into the path of the attack.

‘NO!’ I screamed through our private bond, a sound ripping out of my throat as a physical, thunderous howl.

A streak of white intercepted the strike as Aurora slammed her sleek body directly into the Beta, violently shoving him out of the tail’s path just as it swept through the space.

She saved his life, but she couldn’t clear the blast radius in time.

The sickening crack of the dragon’s tail colliding with her echoed through the clearing like a cannon shot.

A blinding flare of physical agony ripped through my own chest, stealing the oxygen from my lungs. Aurora was launched through the air, her body thrown backward with terrifying speed.

She flew directly toward the dense tree line where Alpha Garrick had been repositioning. He didn’t flinch. Seeing her hurtling toward a tree, Garrick lunged forward, planting his massive paws deep into the dirt. He braced his russet bulk like a stone wall, shifting his angle to catch her.

Aurora crashed into Garrick’s broad side. The impact was heavy enough to make the Alpha slide back several feet, but his thick fur and muscle absorbed the lethal momentum that would have otherwise shattered her spine against the oak tree. She crumpled to the dirt at his paws, a whine escaping her.

My wolf thrashed against my sanity, screaming at me to abandon the fight, to run to her, to tear the world apart to ensure she was breathing. The possessive, frantic instinct to shield my mate was a physical agony, a chain wrapping around my throat and pulling me toward the tree line.

‘Kieran... focus!’ Her voice was a strained, breathless whisper in my mind, fighting through the dark haze of immense pain. ‘’You have to lead them!’

She was right. If I broke formation now, if I succumbed to the terror of a mate rather than the tactical mind of a King, my warriors could be slaughtered. I had several dozen wolves relying on me to keep them alive against two corrupted dragons.

I forcefully swallowed the agonizing howl building again in my chest, anchoring myself to the faint, stubborn pulse of her heartbeat through our bond.

‘Garrick! Defend our Luna with your life!’ I bellowed through the Pack Link, my voice ringing with unquestionable authority.

‘Until my last breath, my King!’ Garrick roared back, planting himself firmly over her crumpled form, his lips peeling back to bare his fangs at the encroaching nightmare.

I whipped my head toward the dragons, my eyes blazing. I focused my consciousness, flooding the Pack Link with absolute, icy command.

‘Torrance, Silas! Take a third of the warriors and finish the first dragon! Do not let it stand back up!’ I projected, my muscles bunching as I locked eyes with the second, uninjured dragon. ‘Kaelen, Vane, Lukan, Rhyon, you are with me! We take the new arrival! Break its wings first!’

‘Yes, Alpha!’ their voices thundered unison across the Pack Link as we launched ourselves at the dragons.
