Chapter 50
It had been such a long time since I had looked forward in any capacity to returning to this home. However, here I was, expecting Hannah, and couldn’t have been any happier. My parents, on the other hand, were less impressed and just as I had expected.
”Where is she?” my mother came over then, seemingly floating through her sea of high society guests in order to get to me. ”She”s your secretary, shouldn”t she have gotten here before you?”
”I didn”t want her to get swallowed up in this crowd you know, so I had her come a bit later. She”ll be arriving soon.”
”Hmph,” she gave me a look and started to walk away, but I grabbed her arm as softly as I could. I stared at her, and she stared back with a knowing smile.
”Don”t make this difficult for her or for me. She”s already flighty.”
”As she should be,” she replied. ”I mean, I know you made your name for yourself all on your own, but I expected you to be with someone of a higher caliber, an heiress or something, or at the very least, a top-tier lawyer like yourself. Yet in the end, you date one woman in a decade, and who you choose is a secretary?”
My scowl became even darker, and she knew that she was acting dangerously.
”Fine,” she sighed, pulling her arm away. ”I”ll try to play nice.”
She went on her way, and just then, my dad came up to me. I glanced at him but didn”t pay him much attention.
”By the way,” he said, “and don”t tell your mother I said this, but secretaries are hot. I approve.”
Amused, I turned at the encouraging pat he gave me on the arm, and then walked into the crowd to mingle with his own colleagues.
Just then, the notification came to my phone, and instantly I turned around and walked out to the hall. I met her at the entrance, still in the back seat of my town car, waiting nervously.
I headed over, to open the door for her, however, I found it locked. She instead rolled down the window, and I could tell just how jittery she was. Before that, however, and for a few seconds, I couldn”t move because she looked impossibly beautiful. At this point, I was sure I had taken in all the different ways in which her physical appearance could mesmerize me; however, with a little darker makeup than usual, more sultry red lips, and a gorgeous black dress, she took my breath away.
”Come out,” I said. ”I need to see you.”
Actually, I was dying to see her full outfit, but she didn’t need to know the extent of my excitement.
”You made me come late,” she said, and I smiled.
”You’re my guest of honor; you shouldn’t have to arrive when everyone else does.”
”Guy,” she complained as I gave Raul a look, and the door clicked open.
”Come on,” he cajoled. ”You should have learned to trust me by now.”
”I do trust you,” she replied as she got out. ”It”s just…”
She turned to me and could barely meet my eyes.
”I understand,” I told her. ”So, let”s take today to feel things out, and then let me know afterward what you decide. Whatever it is, I”ll respect it.”
At this, her expression softened, and then she smiled. I leaned forward to kiss her, and immediately she dodged away and continued toward the entrance to the mansion.
I couldn’t believe I had been rejected. It was for sure a first, but I had to admit that I enjoyed every moment of it.
