Chapter 52

Ihad never seen her so agitated before. And more than anything, I had to admit that it was incredibly arousing. Ever since we had started dating, she wasn’t exactly promiscuous in the way she dressed, but she did dress a little less conservatively, which meant that her neckline sometimes dipped lower than I would have tolerated in the beginning. However, now I have absolutely no problems with it. I couldn’t take my eyes away from the way her body moved as she paced back and forth in thought and then turned to me.

I was so turned on it hurt, but I knew that she was genuinely worried, so I tried my best with the break time I had now to pay attention to what she was saying.

“I’ve always had this nagging suspicion, but there was no way I could confirm the doubts. But after what she said... I didn’t think I was crazy. For instance, when you fired them for the mistakes they made, didn’t you find it odd? Were they that sloppy from the onset?”

I listened and thought back, then nodded.

“I didn’t find it odd, especially because the errors were so blatantly obvious and incredibly potentially devastating to the firm. There was no way I could forgive it.”

“And before then, was there a track record of mistakes like these?”

“Not really, no. So far, and to be honest, you were the only one not quite equipped for this job. The others were very experienced legal secretaries.”

“I know,” she said. “And somehow, I’m the only one that has been able to keep the job. If they do bring this lawsuit against you, it’s going to look very bad.”

“I know,” I shrugged and picked up my phone.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Calling Gloria, Human Resources.”

She immediately panicked and hurried over to me until her chest was almost in my face.

“What do you mean? What are you doing that for?”

I pulled the phone out of her reach even as she all but fell onto me trying to reach for it above my head.

“To fire Sandra, of course. I should never have forgiven her for what she did that first time. Since then, I thought she’d focused on her work with John, but turns out she has been nothing but a canker sore to the rest of the firm. I can’t have her working here anymore.”

“Oh no!” She shrieked, “You can’t do that?”

“Why?” I asked, and she paused for a moment to think.

“I’m immediately worried that this will bring even more problems if you fire yet another staff without proper grounds.”

“I have proper grounds,” I replied. “For her and the others. They made severe mistakes that put the company at risk.”

“And Sandra?” she asked. “What’s her mistake? Exactly?”

“Threatening another member of my staff,” I replied. “Inappropriate sexual misconduct. And from what I hear from you now, intentional sabotage of colleagues. I”m sure there”s more if we start digging, and that”s what I intend to start doing.”

A few seconds later, Gloria picked up, and I informed her of what needed to be done.

“I”ll start work on it immediately,” she said, and I nodded.

I lifted my gaze then and saw her watching me. Suddenly, I was even more nervous than I should have been, and I didn’t even know why.

“This Sandra seems incredibly crazy. I”ve been a lawyer long enough to know not to take crazy stalkers like this for granted, so... we need to have her monitored for a little while.”

Once again, I picked up the phone and after the instructions were given, I hung up.

I looked at her but couldn”t quite decipher the look she was giving me. It was soft and affectionate, as though she was in disbelief.

“What?” I asked.

She came over to me then and held me in a way that I couldn”t deny that I liked.

With her hand cupping the side of my face, she stared deeply into my eyes, and then she leaned down to kiss me.

“I thought you’d dismiss this,” she said. “I thought you”d chalk it up to me overreacting.”

“Why would I do that?” I asked, and she shrugged. Then she leaned down to kiss me and the affection in it damn near stopped my heart.

“Thank you,” she said, and I nodded.

“You’re welcome.”

“Can I ask for a favor though?” she asked, and I nodded.

“Don”t fire Sandra. Not until she does something monumentally bad.”

“She”s already done something monumentally bad,” I replied, stiffening at this.

“I know, but it”s just my word against hers. Let”s wait for evidence first.”

I watched her and even though I didn’t want to admit it, I couldn”t help but agree that she was right, so I nodded and agreed.

“Okay.”

She hugged me one more time, and then she got up and went back to work.
