Chapter 37

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Kinsley

I broke our embrace and placed my hand on his cheek.

“Are you sure you want this?”

“I’m definitely sure.” He smiled. “Are you?” His lips softly brushed against mine.

“Yeah. I’m definitely sure.” I returned his kiss.

I lay in his arms, my head resting against his chest and my body snuggled tightly against his.

“We have to tell my dad,” Chase spoke as he stroked my hair.

“I know, and I’m not sure how he’s going to react because I lied to him.”

“Don’t worry about that.”

“What if he fires me?”

“You’re carrying his grandchild. He isn’t going to fire you. I think the best place to tell him is at the office.”

“Why?” I lifted my head and looked at him. “You don’t think we should do it privately, like at his house?”

“I think we’d be safer at the office. We can tell him and everyone else tomorrow.”

“They’re all going to be mad we lied to them,” I spoke.

“They’ll get over it.” He kissed the top of my head.

I climbed out of bed the next morning and ran to the bathroom.

“Are you okay?” Chase asked as he walked in and held my hair back.

“I’m fine. It’s just morning sickness.”

“Do you do this every day?” he asked with concern.

“Yes.” I vomited again.

“Gee. How long is this going to last?”

“Hopefully, only a couple of more weeks,” I spoke.

He handed me some tissues to wipe my mouth, and as soon as I stood up, he wrapped his arms around me and held me tight.

“Are you nervous about telling my father?”

“Yes. Very nervous.”

“Me too.” He grinned as he kissed my forehead.

We drove into the office together, and I walked Chase to his office.

“Good morning, Sunshine.” He smiled at Lexi.

“Morning, Lexi,” I spoke.

She looked at both of us with narrowed eyes, for she knew something was up.

“Good morning. Did the two of you, by chance, drive in together?” Her brow raised.

“We did,” Chase spoke. “We’ll explain later. I’ll be down in a bit.” He kissed my lips.

“Okay. See you soon.” I smiled.

“What the hell is going on?” Lexi exclaimed.

“Like I said, we’ll explain later.” Chase winked at her.

I walked down the hallway and took a seat at my desk. My nerves were getting the best of me and my legs were starting to shake. I was scared to death to tell Mr. Calloway that I was carrying his grandchild.

“Good morning, Kinsley,” he spoke. “Can you come into my office for a minute? I want to go over a couple of things with you.”

“Good morning, Mr. Calloway.” I smiled and nervously followed him into his office.

“Oh good, you’re both in here.” Chase grinned as he walked in and shut the door.

“Not now, Chase. I’m going over a few things with Kinsley.”

“This can’t wait, Dad,” he spoke as he took the seat next to me and grabbed my hand.

“What the hell is going on?” Mr. Calloway asked as he looked at our hands interlocked.

“You’re going to be a grandfather!” Chase blurted out.

“Excuse me?” He cocked his head.

“The baby Kinsley is carrying is mine. Your grandchild.”

“What?” He shook his head. “Kinsley told me you weren’t the father.”

“That’s because I told her no one was ever to know. I was in a different place then, and I’ve come to my senses. Kinsley and I are going to have a baby, Dad, and you’re just going to have to deal with it.”

“I’m so sorry I lied to you, Mr. Calloway.”

He sat behind his desk with his hands cupped together, glaring at the both of us.

“So, the two of you are in a relationship?” he asked.

“I believe we are.” Chase smiled at me, and I smiled back.

“Thank God.” He let out a breath.

“What?” Chase spoke in confusion. “Aren’t you going to yell or something?”

“Yell? Why the hell would I yell?” He stood up from his chair with his arms spread wide. “My son is finally in a relationship and with a woman whom I like very much, and he’s going to be a father. This is the best news anyone could ever give me.”

“Well.” Chase grinned. “I’m happy you’re happy.”

Mr. Calloway walked over to me, grabbed my hand, and helped me from my chair.

“Welcome to the family, Kinsley.” He hugged me.

“We’re not getting married, Dad,” Chase spoke.

“Doesn’t matter, son. Kinsley is carrying my grandchild; that alone makes her family.”

He turned to Chase and hugged him.

“Congratulations, son.” He patted his back. “We’re going to have a celebratory dinner tonight. I can’t wait to tell Penelope.”

“Thanks, Dad. If it’s all right with you, I’m going to steal my girlfriend for a few minutes. We need to tell Lexi.”

“Yes, of course. Go.” He grinned.

Chase and I walked out of the office and headed down to his.

“Well, he took that better than I thought he would,” he spoke.

“I think I’m still in shock.” I glanced at him.

When we approached his office, he asked Lexi to come in.

“For the second time, what the hell is going on?” she asked.

“Kinsley and I are having a baby.” Chase grinned as he placed his hand on my belly.

“It’s about damn time.” She blew out a breath.

“What? You knew?”

Lexi walked over to him and began slapping his arm.

“Of course, I knew, you idiot. Do you think I’m stupid? Do you really think I believed that Kinsley slept with some random guy? I’ve been waiting for one of you to come to your senses and tell me.”

“I’m sorry, Lexi,” I spoke.

“It’s not your fault, Kinsley. I know you were doing it to protect this idiot.” She began hitting his arm again.

“Will you stop hitting me?” He grabbed her hand.

“Anyway, I suspected the day we had that talk, and I told you that you shouldn’t be a dad and you got all defensive.”
