Chapter Twenty-Eight The Last Blackthorne

Augustus Blackthorne was formally charged on forty-seven federal counts, including racketeering, conspiracy, corporate fraud, attempted murder, and ordering the execution of Elias Vale.

Victor accepted a federal plea agreement, surrendering the location of Elias’s original ledger in exchange for a reduced sentence.

The physical book—bound in worn black leather—had been hidden inside the family’s private chapel on the Blackthorne estate, concealed beneath the marble floor stone bearing the name of Damien’s mother.

When federal agents recovered it, the ledger cleared Aria completely, implicated over half of the former board, and provided investigators with the evidence needed to systematically dismantle the family’s criminal network.

Damien faced separate charges for illegal surveillance networks, corporate obstruction, and unauthorized financial maneuvers.

Aria refused to bury his crimes. When his legal team urged her to suppress the secondary drives, she used them to demand full accountability.

Damien pleaded guilty to reduced charges, paid seventy-five million dollars in restitution, surrendered his private surveillance infrastructure to federal monitors, and accepted three years of probation with strict oversight.

“You could have destroyed those drives,” Damien said quietly as they walked out of the federal courthouse after his sentencing hearing.

“You gave them to me because you promised you were ready to surrender,” Aria answered, looking at him.

“I remember.”

“Then this is what surrender looks like.”

He accepted it without argument.

Six weeks later, Blackthorne Global underwent a historic restructuring.

The Last Blackthorne was a title Damien no longer wanted.

As corporate lawyers spoke of inheritance and succession as though the family name were a prize to be claimed, Damien signed away controlling shares with a calm that stunned the board.

He wasn’t destroying his legacy—he was deciding what deserved to survive it.

The twelve community hospitals were officially converted into a protected nonprofit foundation, protecting thousands of employee livelihoods, while every offshore shell corporation and corrupt subsidiary was liquidated under court supervision.

At their mid-trimester ultrasound, Damien sat beside Aria’s exam table in absolute silence. The technician applied clear gel and pressed a button on the monitor. Suddenly, the steady, rhythmic sound of a tiny, rapid heartbeat filled the room.

Damien’s breath hitched. His eyes locked onto the glowing monochrome screen, watching the small form shifting inside her. His hand rested on the edge of the table, fingers twitching, wanting to reach for her but hesitating—waiting.

Aria looked over at him, turned her hand palm up, and held it out. Damien slipped his fingers into hers, gripping her tightly.

“That is our child,” he whispered, his voice trembling.

“Yes,” Aria said softly.

He closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against the side of her hand. Aria saw terror, wonder, and deep, unconditional love collide inside the man who had once believed that total control was the only way to prevent loss.

“I will protect both of you,” Damien murmured, looking up at her.

“With us,” Aria agreed gently. “Not from above us.”

Damien looked straight into her eyes, his jaw softening. “With you.”

Outside the medical pavilion, reporters waited for the latest scandal surrounding the fall of the Blackthorne dynasty. Aria and Damien walked past them together into the crisp afternoon air. For the first time, his hand remained open at his side until she chose to take it.
