Livia places the three parts of her conclusion beneath separate pools of light.
Gideon's original photograph lies beneath a clear protective sheet.
Her timestamped records from seven years ago rest to its left, imaged and mirrored outside Blackwood control.
The paired presentation case and catalog history occupy the center of the table.
Its rigid cover remains sealed, both empty recesses visible through the transparent top.
No one touches the evidence directly.
Sabine controls the custody log. The conservator watches from the adjoining room. I stand across from Livia with the board waiting on the secure screen and one instruction at the top of my notes.
Listen before deciding.
Livia shifts the photograph's clear carrier by less than an inch.
"The conclusion depends on all three sources agreeing," she says. "No single object carries more weight than it can."
She begins with the photograph.
Gideon Blackwood and Elias Cross stand on opposite sides of the presentation table at Blackwood House. The original image register names both men and calls the event a founders' seal ceremony. Neither stands behind the other. One seal rests beneath Gideon's hand, another beneath Cross's.
Livia moves to her old records.
Her sketches predate the accusation, Gideon's confession, and every motive Conrad now assigns her. They record the repaired crescent on the Blackwood seal, its dimensions, and an interrupted edge she believed belonged to a larger design. The geometry matches the object beneath Gideon's hand.
Then she lowers the examination light over the empty case and places its catalog history beside the cover.
Compression marks define two fitted recesses, with wear traveling inward from both sides.
The oldest surviving catalog entry calls it a paired founders' presentation case for Blackwood and Cross seals in joint emblem configuration.
A later hand struck out Cross and converted the description into a single Blackwood ceremonial object.
"The photograph establishes equal ceremonial placement and names both men," Livia says. "My records connect the Blackwood object I examined to the repaired half in the original image. The case and catalog establish that two related seals were presented as a pair."
She pauses before the line everyone is waiting to use.
"These sources support the historical conclusion that Elias Cross was represented as a cofounder beside Gideon Blackwood."
The word needs no drama.
Cofounder.
Not a creditor or lender whose contribution ended when the Blackwoods repaid a convenient debt.
I look at the empty recess beneath the Cross side of the case.
"What does this not prove?" I ask.
Livia's gaze comes to mine for the first time.
"It does not establish a present ownership percentage or how the founding interest passed through either family. It does not identify the complete legal terms, the Cross seal's location, who altered the records, or who directed the present attacks."
The limits make the conclusion stronger, not smaller.
Last night has no place at this table. I will not turn her professional precision into evidence of affection for me.
Livia faces the board screen.
"The historical question is ready."
She neither asks whether I agree nor watches my face for rescue.
Seven years ago, she brought me a professional contradiction and needed permission to continue.
Today she has built a conclusion that can survive my approval.
What remains is whether I help the institution face it or teach it another way to wait.
Helena Ward activates the emergency session.
Only the necessary directors appear. Conrad sits beneath the severe lighting of the Manhattan conference room, outside counsel beside him. Malcolm joins from his office. Tristan takes the secure window reserved for company counsel.
Helena speaks first. "Mr. Blackwood, has the evidence been released beyond the approved custodians and external specialists?"
"No."
"Has communications received the conclusion?"
"No."
Her attention shifts to Tristan. "Legal assessment."
Tristan does not soften it for the room.
"The historical case is strong. The contemporaneous caption, image register, preexisting examination records, physical wear, and original catalog language support Cross being represented as a founder. That is not the same as establishing a current equity claim."
Conrad leans toward his camera. "Then we are holding an emergency board session over a ceremonial interpretation."
Livia does not react to the insult.
Tristan continues. "Founder status and present legal ownership are separate questions. The first may change how we investigate the second. It does not answer it."
Helena folds her hands. "So the record can support Cross as a cofounder without telling us what Blackwood Global owes, to whom, or in what amount."
"Correct."
Conrad looks at Livia. "And your conclusion depends on your own notes from the investigation that destroyed your reputation."
"My notes are one part of the authentication," she says. "They were timestamped, mirrored, and created before the seal was found in my case. The photograph and case exist independently of me."
"You cannot authenticate an ownership theory."
"I did not."
His mouth tightens.
Livia turns one page of her report.
"I authenticated the historical representation.
Gideon Blackwood and Elias Cross were recorded in equal ceremonial position at a founders' seal presentation.
The paired case and earliest catalog record name them both.
A later revision removed one name and one object.
What that means for modern ownership belongs to counsel and independent governance review. "
She gives him neither defensiveness to attack nor a legal claim to distort.
Conrad tries another angle. "A ceremony can be symbolic."
"Yes," Livia says. "That is one reason my report does not assign ownership."
He gets the distinction he wanted, not the dismissal.
Helena looks from the photograph on her screen to the written legal qualification.
"The board is not being asked to approve a Cross claim today."
"No," Tristan says. "It is being asked whether the historical conclusion may proceed into independent review without suppression."
That is the real vote, though no one has called it one yet.
Malcolm removes his glasses and sets them on the desk.
"I believe Ms. Arden has done careful work," he says. "Nothing said here should be used to question her competence."
"But a conclusion this serious will not remain historical once it leaves this session. Employees will hear fraud. Lenders will hear disputed ownership. The brothers will hear that everything Gideon taught us may have been built on a lie."
Callum and Nash are not on the call. Tristan is present as counsel, not as their brother. Malcolm invokes the family as people who will bear whatever happens next.
"We have external authentication underway," he continues. "Give it time. Let Tristan determine what disclosure is required. Let Helena establish the governance process before Alexander endorses language the company cannot recall."
Conrad says nothing. He does not need to. Malcolm has made waiting sound like the adult choice.
Helena looks at me. "A short delay would not alter custody or stop the technical work. It would allow the board to receive independent confirmation before adopting the conclusion."
Adopting. Endorsing. Releasing. Every verb moves the question from whether Livia is right to when the institution can survive saying so.
Seven years ago, she placed a contradiction before me and asked for an independent review. I told myself I needed certainty before opposing my father, the archive, the investigation, and the authority I had barely learned to hold.
Certainty never came because I allowed the people protected by the answer to control the questions.
Malcolm leans closer to the camera.
"Alexander, I am asking you to wait until belief and consequence can be separated. Twenty-four hours. Perhaps forty-eight. No destruction. No concealment. Only care."
The request offers every comfort my old instincts recognize.
Time to speak to my brothers. Time to calculate lender exposure.
Time to contain cofounder inside a historical footnote.
Nothing falsified. Nothing burned. The truth simply powerless until the people endangered by it decide how much power to allow.
Livia does not look at me.
She has already stated the conclusion. She will not ask me to believe it again.
The board can preserve every object and still repeat the betrayal. It can secure her report, praise her method, authorize more tests, and refuse to let the truth exist until no one powerful is threatened by it.
I once called that responsibility.
Now I know its cost.
"No," I say.
Malcolm's expression does not change. Conrad's does.
Helena studies me. "No delay?"
"No delay in recognizing what the current evidence establishes."
I place both hands on the conference table because I want them visible when I decide.
"Elias Cross was represented as a cofounder of the enterprise Gideon Blackwood later presented as his alone."
Conrad begins to speak.
I continue before he can turn the conclusion back into an argument about Livia.
"That statement does not assign modern ownership, calculate damages, determine remedy, or accuse any living director of the original alteration. Those limits will appear beside the conclusion every time it circulates."
Tristan watches without interrupting.
"I authorize continued independent archive access under the existing custody agreement.
Livia's report and every revision remain mirrored to Arden Provenance and Sabine.
The photograph, case, catalog, and original records go to external authentication under neutral custody and without Blackwood editorial control. "
Helena's eyes narrow slightly. "And governance disclosure?"
"All directors receive Livia's documented historical conclusion and its limits today.
The governance committee receives the underlying materials under existing custody controls.
Communications receives nothing until the committee determines what must be said publicly.
The board does not get to decide whether the conclusion exists. "
Conrad's voice cuts through the speaker. "You are committing this company to the allegation that it stole its foundation."
"No. I am committing it to an independently documented founding record that includes Elias Cross."
"You are doing this because of her."
The accusation reaches for the private truth he cannot prove.
I look at Livia only after I answer.
"I am doing it because the evidence supports her conclusion. My history with Ms. Arden is why every control must remain in place. It is not a reason to bury her work."
Conrad turns to Helena. "He should be recused."
"That question will be considered separately," she says. "The present authorization stands unless the board votes to countermand it."
No one moves to call the vote.
Helena enters the authorization into the record. Conrad states his objection, then demands the underlying materials under the same custody restrictions as every other director. Tristan agrees to access, not control. The distinction is written before the meeting can blur it.
Malcolm puts his glasses back on.
"If this is the decision," he says, "the minutes should state the historical conclusion, the legal limits, and the requirement for external review."
He accepts the decision without resistance.
"Agreed," I say.
He nods once. "Then proceed carefully."
For the first time in seven years, careful does not mean silent.
Sabine sends the preservation confirmations while the session is still open. Tristan begins the external-review instruction. Helena orders the governance committee to receive the complete file by noon.
Consequences follow the words before anyone can make them safer.
The board session ends at eleven thirty-seven.
Sabine leaves to complete the external transfer record. Tristan remains on another call. The conservator reseals the rigid cover with a fresh tamper strip and withdraws.
Livia and I remain in the room under the fixed camera, separated by the examination table and everything on it.
She closes the report but does not pack it away.
"You understood the distinction," she says.
"Founder status is not a completed ownership claim."
"That is not the distinction I meant."
The old answer would ask her to explain more gently. I wait.
"You believed the work before the board approved it," she says. "Before Tristan could tell you what it would cost."
I look at the photograph between us. Gideon and Cross stand with a shared object while generations after them learned to see only one man.
"I believed what the evidence established."
"Seven years ago, you said the evidence was incomplete."
"It was incomplete."
Her fingers still against the report.
I do not let the sentence stand alone.
"It was incomplete, and I used that as permission to reject every question that threatened the answer I wanted. Today the legal case is incomplete. Your historical conclusion is not."
She watches me in the silence after it.
This is not the apology she is owed. I do not yet know enough to name every decision I made, and I will not offer broad regret where precision belongs.
Livia touches one finger to the edge of her report.
"This does not restore what happened."
"No."
"It does not make last night a promise."
"No."
"It does not mean I trust what you will do when belief becomes public damage."
The words hurt. Pain is not permission to argue.
"Then judge the next choice when it arrives."
Her gaze lifts to mine.
"I will."
She signs the external-transfer authorization and slides it across the table for Sabine's return. The gesture is procedural. It still sends her conclusion forward under rules neither my family nor I can quietly reverse.
No forgiveness or reassurance. Something more demanding.
A future test.
The engagement ring remains locked in her field case. The old promise has not returned to her hand. I have not earned the right to imagine another one.
But she leaves the report open between us.
On the first page, beneath the photographs and qualifications, one sentence now belongs to the formal record.
