Chapter 61

Chapter

Sixty-One

SABLE

T he warmth of the fire fills Kael’s chambers, casting flickering shadows across the walls. I sit cross-legged on one of the massive cushions sprawled near the hearth, a glass of something dark and heady in my hand. My body still aches from the trials, but it’s a good ache—a reminder that we won. That we’re still standing.

Torin lounges against the arm of a low sofa, one leg hanging lazily over the edge, his ever-present grin curling his lips as he swirls his drink in hand. Finn sits near me, sharp and composed even in relaxation, rolling a silver ring between his fingers as if lost in thought. And Kael… he leans against the mantle, his eyes on me, unreadable but intense, as always.

“So,” Torin says, breaking the comfortable silence. “Kitten, how does it feel to be the most dangerous person in the keep? Besides me, of course.”

I snort, shaking my head. “I’m just trying to figure out how I survived Rothgar without you stepping in to steal all the glory.”

Torin chuckles, tipping his glass toward me. “You wound me. I gave you the stage, didn’t I? Best decision I’ve ever made.”

Kael rolls his eyes, but I catch the faintest flicker of a smile. “He’s not wrong,” he says quietly. “You earned it.”

The words settle over me, heavier than they should. I take a sip of my drink to hide the sudden lump in my throat. “Thanks,” I murmur.

Finn leans forward slightly, his piercing gaze locking onto mine. “It’s more than earning it, Sable. You’ve changed things—for all of us. For the tribe. And… for me.”

My heart skips. Finn isn’t the type to lay his emotions bare. He’s controlled, precise, guarded. But his voice carries an honesty that I can’t ignore.

“I’ve spent my life keeping people at arm’s length,” Finn continues, his tone measured but softer than usual. “I thought it was safer. Easier. But you’ve reminded me that sometimes strength comes from letting people in.” He sets his glass down, his fingers brushing mine briefly. “I want you to stay. With us.”

The words hang in the air, and I look between them, my throat tightening. “Stay,” I repeat, almost to myself. “You all want me to stay?”

Torin laughs, standing and stretching like a predator satisfied with its kill. “Of course we do, kitten. You’re ours now. Took you long enough to figure that out.”

Kael’s gaze sharpens, and he steps closer, towering over me. “It’s more than that,” he says, his voice low. “You belong here. With us. You’ve proven that.”

Emotion wells up inside me, a mix of relief, hope, and something deeper. I look down at my glass, trying to steady my hands, when Finn clears his throat, his sharp gaze softening .

“There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you,” he says, his voice low but deliberate.

I glance up at him, my brow furrowing. “What is it?”

Finn sets his glass down, his fingers absently rolling the silver ring on his knuckles. “After you told us your story, I did some digging. Quietly. I wanted to know more about the tribe that attacked your family.”

My chest tightens. “And?”

He holds my gaze, his tone steady but grave. “It was Rothgar,” he says. “The tribe that killed your family was acting under his direction. This was long before Kael united the north, but his influence was there. They were his pawns.”

The weight of his words crashes over me, leaving me breathless. I clutch the edge of the cushion, my knuckles white. “Rothgar,” I whisper, the name tasting bitter on my tongue. “He...he ordered it?”

Finn nods solemnly. “Yes. You’ve avenged them, Sable. Your oath is fulfilled.”

The realization strikes me, raw and overwhelming. It’s over. The rage, the hatred that’s driven me for so long—it doesn’t need to consume me anymore. “It’s over,” I whisper, the words trembling as they leave my lips. “I’ve done it.”

Torin kneels in front of me, his hands gripping my knees, his usually mischievous eyes now deadly serious. “You’ve done more than that, kitten. You’ve changed us. Changed me. I’ve never thought much about what it means to... care about someone. Hell, I don’t even think I’ve loved anyone before. But with you, it’s easy.” His voice drops, rough and raw. “I’d burn this place to the ground if it meant keeping you safe.”

A watery laugh escapes me, and I reach out, resting my hand on his. “You’re crazy, Torin. But... I love that about you.” My voice softens, and I feel my chest tighten as I admit the truth. “I love you. ”

Torin’s grin splits wide, that unhinged edge flickering behind his expression. “Damn right you do, kitten.” His hands tighten on my knees, his voice lowering to a playful growl. “And you better, because you’re mine now. All mine. And I’m yours.”

For a moment, the room stills, the weight of his words settling between us. There’s no teasing, no bravado in his tone—just an honesty I wasn’t prepared for, but one that wraps around my heart like a protective shield.

“And you better believe,” he adds, his grin returning, “if anyone tries to take you from me, I’ll show them just how crazy I can be.”

Finn steps forward, quiet as always, his sharp gaze soft but focused. He’s been standing slightly apart from the moment, observing with his usual intensity, but now, his hand moves, and my attention is drawn to the silver ring he’s rolling between his fingers. That familiar habit, the way it seems to ground him, holds an almost hypnotic quality.

“Finn?” I ask softly, watching the way the firelight catches on the metal as it glints between his knuckles.

He exhales slowly, the kind of breath someone takes when they’re about to do something that costs them. His eyes meet mine, and there’s something in them I don’t often see—a rawness, an unspoken weight. “Sable,” he says, his voice low and measured. “This ring...it’s more than just a keepsake. It’s a reminder.”

I nod, not wanting to interrupt him. Finn doesn’t open up easily, and whatever he’s about to say feels monumental.

“I’ve carried it for years. Rolled it between my fingers every day to remind myself of the past. Of what I’ve lost. Of what I’ll never allow myself to have again.” He pauses, turning the ring over in his hand. “But maybe it’s time for that to change.”

The words hang in the air, heavy and charged. My heart beats faster as Finn steps closer, the small silver band held carefully between his thumb and forefinger.

“May I?” he asks, and his gaze flickers to my hand.

I lift my hand hesitantly, my chest tightening as he gently takes it in his own. His touch is steady, warm, and I can feel the significance of this moment radiating from him like a pulse. Finn isn’t Torin—he won’t voice grand declarations, won’t offer flowery words or promises. But this...this is something deeper.

He slips the ring onto my finger, his movements precise and deliberate. The cool metal feels heavy, almost alive, as though it carries the weight of everything he’s gone through. Everything he’s letting go of.

“It’s yours now,” he says simply, his voice quieter than before but no less intense. “For safe keeping. For...us.”

The breath I’ve been holding escapes in a rush, and I look down at the ring, my fingers trembling slightly. “Finn,” I whisper, my throat tight with emotion. “This means so much to you. Are you sure?”

“I’m sure,” he replies, his eyes never leaving mine. “You’ve already changed so much for us—for me. It’s time I let go of what’s holding me back. And if anyone deserves this, it’s you.”

The warmth in his tone, the vulnerability he’s rarely shown, makes my chest ache. I curl my fingers, feeling the ring settle against my skin. “Thank you,” I manage to say, my voice thick. “I’ll protect it. Always.”

Finn nods, his usual stoic expression softening just slightly. His thumb brushes over the back of my hand before he steps back, giving me space. But the weight of his gesture lingers, as tangible as the ring itself.

Kael steps forward next, his presence commanding as always, though there’s a flicker of something in his eyes that softens the edge. His gaze is locked on me, and I feel my breath hitch. Kael rarely lets his guard down, even around me, but tonight...tonight feels different.

He looks down at my hand, at Finn’s ring now resting on my finger, and then back up to my face. His jaw tenses, but it’s not with jealousy—it’s something deeper. A decision forming behind those ice-blue eyes.

“I have something for you too,” Kael says, his voice low but steady. He reaches into his coat, pulling out a small, worn object. When he holds it out, I realize it’s a leather-bound journal, the edges frayed from years of use.

I glance up at him, confused. “What is this?”

He hesitates, his fingers brushing over the cover before he hands it to me. “It’s...my past. My thoughts. The things I’ve never shared with anyone. Not even Torin or Finn.”

My eyes widen as I take the journal, the weight of it feeling heavier than its size. “Kael, this—are you sure?”

“I’m sure,” he replies, his tone firm. “You wanted to understand me, to know who I really am. This is everything. The things that made me, the decisions I’ve questioned, the truths I’ve buried. It’s all in there.”

Emotion wells up in my chest, and I clutch the journal tightly. Kael, the man who keeps everyone at arm’s length, who rules with an iron will and never falters, is offering me something so personal, so raw. “Thank you,” I whisper, my voice trembling. “This means...more than I can say.”

Kael steps closer, his towering frame casting a shadow over me, but there’s no intimidation in it. Only warmth. “You’re not just some binding or ally to us, Sable,” he says, his voice softer now. “You’re part of this—part of us. And I’ll spend however long it takes proving that to you.”

My heart twists at his words, and before I can stop myself, I step forward, closing the space between us. “Kael...” I murmur, my hand brushing against his chest. His gaze drops to mine, intense and unwavering, and I feel the air between us shift.

Then, without warning, Kael’s hand cups the back of my neck, and he pulls me into him. His lips crush against mine, firm and unrelenting, but there’s a tenderness there too. A rawness that makes my knees weak. I lean into him, my fingers gripping his shirt as the kiss deepens, a surge of electricity crackling between us through the bond.

Behind us, Torin lets out a loud whoop, breaking the moment. “Finally!” he shouts, his voice dripping with glee. “Took you long enough, Alpha!”

Kael pulls back slightly, his forehead resting against mine as he mutters under his breath, “Of course, Torin couldn’t keep quiet.”

I laugh softly, my cheeks flushed, and glance over at Torin, who’s grinning like a maniac. “Thanks for the commentary, Reaper,” I call out, and Torin winks.

“Anytime, kitten.”

Kael’s fingers tighten slightly on my neck, drawing my attention back to him. “Ignore him,” he says, his voice low and possessive. “This moment’s ours.”

I nod, my heart pounding, and he leans in again, his lips brushing against mine in a kiss that’s softer this time but no less intense. This isn’t just a kiss—it’s a promise, a declaration of something that runs far deeper than words.

Kael pulls back, his thumb brushing over my cheek as he looks at me with an intensity that sends shivers down my spine. There’s something unspoken in his eyes, something that doesn’t need words. He steps back, his hand lingering on mine for just a moment before he releases me .

I glance around the room, my gaze landing on each of them in turn. Torin is still grinning like the devil, lounging against the edge of Kael's bed now, his tattoos catching the soft light. Finn watches me carefully. And Kael...Kael stands tall and resolute, but there’s a rare softness in his expression, one that makes my chest ache.

The air between us feels charged, heavy with an unspoken understanding. These three men—these brothers—have changed everything for me. I feel their presence through the bonds, each one unique, each one pulling at a different piece of me. I realize how much I want this. All of it. Them.

Torin breaks the silence with a low chuckle, his voice carrying a teasing edge. “So, kitten, now that the Alpha’s finally caught up, what’s next? A toast? A celebration? Or...” His grin turns wicked. “Something a little more hands-on?”

I roll my eyes, but my lips twitch into a smile despite myself. “You’re incorrigible, Torin.”

“And you love it,” he shoots back, his eyes gleaming.

Finn clears his throat, his expression carefully neutral but his voice carrying a subtle heat. “It’s been a long night. Perhaps we should...unwind. Together.”

The suggestion hangs in the air, heavy with implication. My breath catches as I look between them, their gazes locked on me, waiting. The bond between us hums softly, a thread connecting all of us, pulling tighter with every passing second.

Kael’s voice is the one to cut through the silence, low and steady. “If this is what you want, Sable, we’ll follow your lead. But the choice is yours.”

My heart pounds as I take a step back, the weight of their attention making my skin tingle. “All of you…” I murmur, my voice barely above a whisper. “You’ve each given me something I didn’t even know I needed. Torin, your chaos and passion. Finn, your quiet strength and insight. And Kael…” I meet his gaze, my lips curving into a small smile. “Your unwavering protection.”

They’re watching me, waiting for my next move. I take a deep breath, letting the bond between us guide me. “I want this. I want all of you. Together.”

Torin’s grin widens, and he’s the first to move, stepping closer and brushing his fingers against my cheek. “Kitten, you have no idea how much I’ve wanted to hear that.”

Finn is next, his touch more hesitant but no less meaningful as he reaches for my hand. “Then let us show you what that means.”

Kael doesn’t speak, but his eyes say everything. He steps forward, his hand resting on my lower back as he leans in, his lips brushing against my temple. “We’ll take care of you,” he murmurs, his voice rough with emotion. “Always.”

The tension in the room shifts, turning from something heavy and unspoken to a spark ready to ignite. I feel the pull of the bond, the connection between all of us growing stronger, more certain. And as they close in around me, their warmth, their strength, their unwavering presence, I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
