Chapter 43

Roark

The weekend got here faster than I wanted it too. The library was filled with politics and the wealthy of wealthy from the area and surrounding areas. There are more elite families in this place then I care to admit. There’s also many single women roaming the stacks and looking to go home with the single males from those elite families.

The Paxley’s showed up as if nothing had happened. As if we didn’t watch their family implode. They looked in the box just like Andy thought they would, but the quick little walk onto the Paxley property was enough for him to hack into their security system and watch the cameras inside and outside of the house. We got a nice show from them all. The Paxley’s have a daughter we didn’t know about, but something tells me the last remaining Paxley son has no idea that the girl is his sister.

Andy is working on her background, seeing if she is biologically a Paxley or adopted. The Paxley’s did adopt a child when they first married back in the eighties but shortly found the child a home with another family. The child is in their late thirties now, but still alive and as far as Andy could tell, no trauma. The kid was probably a talker and wouldn’t play along with their games. Kids had a tendency to open their mouths if they thought it would help save them.

Megan caught my attention and pulled me over to the side of the room, dragging me from my thoughts about how horrible these families treated children.

“My cousin Lexi is here, can you do me a huge favor and make sure that Alan Paxley stays far the fuck away from her?” Megan asked of me before diving back into twirling around the room checking in with guests and the caterers and the staff that was handing out materials and talking to guests. She made this hosting thing look so damn easy. She even checked in with each of us throughout the night making sure we were good and seeing if we needed anything.

I followed her up to the front desk. “Point her out and I’ll do the best I can,” I said, resting my back against the desk. She pointed over to a petite, blonde-haired, green-eyed woman. She looked like someone I would’ve tried to take behind the bleachers at a high school football game. Definitely the cheerleader type. I nodded at Megan and headed over to where Max was standing watching the entire room from a vantage point on the side of the stage.

“Arden Mitchell arrived with the Paxley’s. No other security members though, and Arden is sticking closely to Rebecca and Bridget,” Max stated as I looked over clocking eyes on Lexi. I still don’t know why Megan asked me and not Max.

“Wonder twins still stalking Megan from the shadows of the rows?” I said. Max chuckled at my nickname for Tony and Ally.

“They’re either watching her from the aisles, or they are fucking in the bathroom. Megan ask you to watch Lexi?” He asked me like he already knew what she asked.

“Yeah, is there a reason she didn’t ask you?” I asked him, my eyebrow raised in suspicion,

“She did, but Rick told her I have to keep eyes on the Paxley’s. She has the wonder twins, you, Monty, Pete and Andy all following her every move throughout the room. I’m surprised she can do this with a straight face. She doesn’t seem like someone who enjoys these types of parties,” Max replied. His eyes locked on her as she blew him a kiss. He acted like he caught it and put it in his pocket, she smiled and went about her business.

These two were disgustingly sick with their love. Maybe one day I can have a love like that. For now, I’ll enjoy the company of random women. No strings attached. I noticed Alan Paxley walk into the room and he looked right at Lexi. She immediately excused herself from the conversation she was having and walked away from him.

“See that? She doesn’t want him to see her. What the fuck happened between them?” Max asked me, but it was my job to keep an eye on him, so I walked away from Max and stalked through the crowd. A woman, who was clearly drunk, reached out and grabbed my dick as I was trying to pass her. I politely grabbed her hand and removed it from me.

“Oh, come on. You can’t tell me you wouldn’t be interested in having a good night out with someone like me. I can pay you handsomely for your time,” she smiled at me.

“Ma’am, while that sounds tempting, I could arrest you for solicitating an officer,” I said as politely as I could. She giggled like a little school girl to her friends who were all eye fucking me. None of these women were my type, desperate housewives or politicians wives who just need a quick fuck because their husbands are banging the nannies or the secretaries.

“Right, because you’re a police officer,” she said, exaggerating the you’re in her sentence. I pulled my badge out and showed it to her. Their faces all dropped, “I’m sorry officer, I think I’ve had a little too much to drink.”

Her and the group of desperate housewives fluttered off back into the crowd to harass someone else for sex. I looked around the room and spotted Lexi standing with her back to one of the bookshelves, Alan in front of her pressing himself up against her. Oh, fuck no!

I stalk through the crowd practically throwing people out of the way. I caught Megan’s stare of horror as she looked to where I was stalking off toward. I met her gaze and tapped my gun. She wasn’t going anywhere tonight.

I slowed my pace to a casual stroll, slipping through the remaining people in the crowd until I was within reach of Lexi. I slipped my arm around her shoulder, “Hey babe, Megan’s looking for you. Something about needing your help, with what, I have no idea.”

Lexi to her credit didn’t flinch at my touch or act as if I was a stranger, “Oh hey babe. I was just telling Mr. Paxley here that I was taken,” she said as she nuzzled up to my chest. A smug smile crossed my lips, I held my hand out to Alan in a friendly gesture. He looked at me with disgust, before taking my hand in a semi aggressive way. I met his aggression with my own, squeezing his hand until I felt a slight crack.

“Officer Roark Lochlan. I’m assuming you are Alan Paxley. We’re part of the security for this evening,” I introduced myself, pulling Lexi in tighter. She wraps her arms around my waist and takes a deep breath. She’s cute, I’ll give her that.

“Yes, thank you for offering to help keep this event safe. My family appreciates it,” He says, pulling his hand back from me as if I was literal fire scorching his skin.

“I was surprised that your brother wasn’t listed as a VIP guest this evening, I hope he’s alright,” I feigned like I cared. However, Alan’s eyes widened quickly then went back to a bored expression.

“He’s sick,” he said bluntly as if talking about his brother was not allowed and he would be stricken down for speaking about him.

“I hope he recovers quickly,” I said trying to keep a positive attitude. “I am sorry though; I must excuse us. Megan is waiting for us.” Lexi nodded her head and said a quick goodbye as I hauled us away from Alan who was standing there raging that I wouldn’t let him hug her.

“Thank you for that,” she muttered, trying to pull out of my grasp. She looked up at me, the look of rage flickered in her eye like a fire about to ignite.

“He’s still watching us, unless you want him to come back over and start bothering you again, stay close. Megan asked me to keep Alan away from you. I’m doing exactly as she asked,” I said to her pressing a fake kiss to the top of her head.

“She’s overbearing,” Lexi snorted. “I can handle myself. I’m not weak.”

“She doesn’t think you’re weak. She just doesn’t trust the Paxley family, I don’t blame her,” I remarked. I don’t want to speak about Megan’s business without her permission or else I’d be warning Lexi to stay the fuck off their radar.

“Our whole family doesn’t trust them. I know how to keep my distance. He just made a beeline for me, and I wasn’t expecting to trip and fall into the aisle. Stupid fucking heels,” she groaned.

“Well, if you need my help again, I’ll tell Megan to give you my number. Anything you need, I got you,” I gave her my best smile as we arrived next to Megan who was spinning in circles looking for something behind the desk.

“Megan, top drawer to your left, I guarantee whatever you are looking for is there,” Lexi said, Megan looked at her and pulled her brows. She opened the drawer and pulled out a notepad and a pink pen with one of those cheap fake diamonds on it.

“I don’t know how the hell you always manage to know what I’m looking for, but thank you,” Megan said as she quickly wrote something down and handed the paper to a waiter who was at the other end of the desk.

“Thank me by giving me his number,” she said cheekily to her cousin. Megan’s eyes widened and her mouth popped open to retort.

“It’s fine, just give it to her. If she needs me for another rescue, I rather her be able to get ahold of me. And besides, we have to keep up appearances of our relationship for the idiot Paxley,” I grinned at her, placing another kiss on Lexi’s head and mockingly bowed. “I’ll be just over there if you need me love.”

Lexi blushed as Megan quickly texted her my number. I walked away before Megan could start to give me shit about it. Lexi however was blushing a cute pale pink. My work for tonight might just be interesting after all.
