Chapter 31 Independent Terms #2

Every sensation arrived sharpened by separation. The texture of his shirt beneath my palms. The scrape of stubble at my jaw. The faint tremor in his fingers when I opened his collar and found the pulse he usually kept invisible.

"Bedroom," I whispered.

He looked at me.

Not a request for permission. A final chance to change direction.

I took his hand and led him.

Inside my room, no hotel glass reflected us. No company owned the sheets. No morning schedule waited outside the door.

Conrad stopped beside the bed.

"Take off my shirt," he said.

The quiet command sent heat through me.

I opened each button while he watched. His body remained still, but the breathing beneath my hands lost its measured pattern. When I pushed the fabric from his shoulders, he caught my wrist and kissed the inside of it.

Tenderness entered without reducing the hunger.

That was new.

"I love you," he said against my skin.

The words were private this time.

They did not ask me to forgive anything.

"I love you too."

His control broke audibly.

My name left him rough and low as he pulled me close. We fell onto the bed with none of London's negotiated distance, laughing once when his knee caught the blanket, then losing the sound inside another kiss.

He touched me as if memory had kept every response and separation had made none of them ordinary.

His mouth followed the path of his hands.

Heat gathered slowly, then all at once, until my body tightened and every thought narrowed to the pressure of him, the sound of his breathing, and the way command became service without becoming submission.

When I reached for him, he caught my hand above my head.

"Not yet."

The words were pure Conrad.

I smiled despite the ache. "You are enjoying this."

"Immensely."

He made me wait until waiting became unbearable.

Then he knelt.

His hands drew the last lace down my legs, unhurried, as if the floor were an appointment he had kept for eight months. He kissed the inside of one knee. The other. The crease of my thigh, close enough that my fingers found his hair.

"Conrad."

"I know what you refused to ask for." His breath touched me. "You will not have to."

He put his mouth on me.

The first slow stroke of his tongue emptied every planned sentence I owned.

I had forgotten nothing about him, and my body proved it had learned more than I admitted, rising to meet the patience he used like an argument.

He read each answer as I gave it. The tightening of my hand.

The hitch when he changed pressure. The sound I stopped trying to file somewhere dignified.

When my knees threatened the arrangement, he guided one of my legs over his shoulder and held me steady, palm spread warm across my hip, and did not slow.

"Look down," he said against me. "I want you to watch what missing you did."

I looked.

The sight of him, patient and ruined at once, finished what his mouth had started.

Pleasure broke through me with his name in my mouth, my hand in his hair, rain striping the dark window. He stayed until the tremors gentled into breathing, kissed my hip bone once, and rose.

For one suspended moment, I held nothing back.

Conrad gathered me against him until my breathing slowed. His mouth touched my temple, my cheek, the corner of my lips.

"Still with me?" he asked.

"Yes."

One check. One answer.

Then I rolled him beneath me.

Surprise flashed across his face before desire replaced it.

"My turn," I said.

His hands settled at my hips.

"Use judgment."

I did.

I started at his jaw and worked down, learning him again with my mouth. The pulse he kept invisible. The flat of his stomach, muscles pulling tight beneath my lips. When I reached his belt, his hand lifted, hovered, and returned to the sheet without landing.

Judgment, exercised.

I freed him and took him in my hand, slow, watching eight months of discipline fail by degrees. The sound he made was low and involuntary and mine.

"Simone."

"Mm."

"The drawer."

The nightstand held what he had not presumed to mention until asked. I opened the packet and rolled it onto him myself, and his head tipped back against the pillow as if the touch alone required management.

Then I rose over him.

His hands settled at my hips again, steadying without steering. I took him inside me slowly, in increments that let me feel every place separation had made new, and watched his face do what it never did in any boardroom. Open completely.

"Conrad."

"I am here."

I moved.

The rhythm belonged to me first, unhurried, testing. He met it and did not take it. His restraint was no longer a wall; it was attention, spent entirely on the places that made my breath fracture. When I leaned down to kiss him, the angle changed and we both made the discovery aloud.

After that, neither of us led.

Control moved between us because neither of us needed to keep it to remain safe. I learned the sound he made when patience failed. He learned that my name for him, said at a certain pitch, could pull his hips up hard beneath me. The bed lost its manners. Rain kept the only schedule in the room.

His hand slid between us, sure of its errand, and pleasure gathered again with shocking speed, winding tight while he watched me with the entire unguarded attention I had once mistaken for interrogation.

"With me," he said. Not an order. An invitation.

I came with his name breaking in half, and the sound pulled him past every remaining increment of control. He drove up into me, gripped my hips, and followed, my name rough in his throat and his eyes open on mine until the last of it left him.

I folded onto his chest. His arms closed around me. Beneath my ear, his heart worked like something recently used for its actual purpose.

There was no contract between us and no uncertainty about the choice. Only heat, rain, and the look on Conrad's face when love stopped being something he could contain through silence.

Afterward, he lay beside me with one hand open on the sheet.

Not offered as a test.

Simply there.

I placed mine over it.

"You can stay," I said.

His fingers closed around mine.

"Tonight?"

I understood the question.

"Tonight."

No future smuggled inside the word.

No disappointment that it did not contain more.

He pulled the blanket over us.

For several minutes, rain and breath were the only sounds in the room.

Then Conrad said, "I do not want tomorrow morning to become a test I can pass by behaving correctly."

I turned toward him.

His hair had lost its order. A mark from my mouth darkened the skin below his collarbone. The sight satisfied me at a level no governance structure was designed to reach.

"What do you want it to become?" I asked.

"Morning. Coffee if invited. Departure when requested. Another date if we both want one."

"You have made breakfast sound like a compliance framework."

"I am attempting romance in a language I speak."

I traced the line of his shoulder.

"Coffee is invited," I said. "Departure will be discussed after it."

"And another date?"

"You are using the afterglow to negotiate."

"I was informed no contract would exist. I am adapting."

I laughed into his chest.

His arm tightened around me, not trapping, simply answering.

"Yes," I said. "I want another date."

His body released a tension I had not noticed he was holding.

"Thank you."

"Do not make me regret rewarding excessive patience."

"I will be commanding again by breakfast."

"Good. I like you commanding. I object to collateral damage."

He kissed the top of my head.

"Understood."

The word was still a locked room sometimes.

Tonight, the door stood open.

Outside, the city continued without our supervision.

For the first time, independent terms did not feel like distance.

They felt like the reason I could choose closeness without disappearing inside it.
