4. Maria
With the dress on that Nathan bought for me, I feel like a million bucks — and I wouldn’t be surprised if the gown had cost nearly that much.
It fits like a second skin and is sexy without being too revealing. I’ve never worn anything like it in my life, and I’m not na?ve enough to think I ever will again.
“Now we need to have your hair and makeup done,” Nathan says casually as we get back into the car.
“Oh. Um, all right.” But of course I need to get dolled up. My everyday look is best described as natural, and everyone else at this gala will probably be fully done up.
We arrive at a salon that has all but one light off. Apparently, they’ve kept the place open just for us. I could ask how Nathan pulled all of this off last-minute, but I already know. As his assistant, I’m well aware of the sway he holds in this city.
Even though he’s the most high-profile person I’ve ever worked for, though, in some ways he’s the easiest. If he needs or wants something, I just place a call. Nine times out of ten, people fall to their knees and provide whatever they can, no questions asked.
And the money helps, too. He’s always believed in sharing the wealth and paying people well for their time.
Feeling a little bit like a princess, I lift my skirt and follow Nathan into the salon.
As soon as we step inside, the hairstylist greets us with a smile. I feel a little intimidated by her perfect hair and makeup, but she quickly puts me at ease. “What can I do for you tonight?” she asks, eyeing my hair critically.
“I’m thinking something elegant, but not too fussy,” Nathan says, taking a seat on a plush couch.
The stylist nods, running her fingers through my hair. “What do you think of an updo? Something like a chignon?”
I nod, feeling a little nervous but also excited at the prospect of a fancy hairstyle.
As she works her magic, Nathan and I chat about the upcoming gala. He fills me in on some of the other guests and what they’re likely to wear. “You’re going to be the belle of the ball, Maria,” he says with a grin. “Just wait until you see the looks on everyone’s faces when they see you.”
I feel a blush rise to my cheeks, both from the compliment and the way he’s looking at me. There’s something in his gaze that I can’t quite decipher, but it makes my heart race nonetheless.
As the stylist finishes up my hair, I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and gasp. I look like a completely different person.
Next up is makeup, and I’m a little bit nervous about that. I’ve never been one for a lot of makeup, but I trust that the stylist knows what she’s doing.
And she does. When she’s finished, I barely recognize myself. My eyes are smoky and dramatic, my lips a deep crimson. I look both sophisticated and a little bit dangerous.
Nathan’s eyes widen when he sees me, and I grin. Maybe this is the start of him seeing me as something other than his assistant.
But as soon as I have the thought, I shake it out of my mind. I shouldn’t be thinking that way. Nothing will ever happen between Nathan and me. Even if he weren’t my boss, there’s still the fact that he’s a serial dater. I’m not interested in a wham, bam, thank you ma’am.
“You look gorgeous,” he says — well, more like breathes it. And then he blinks and shakes his head, as if he’s snapped to and remembered who he’s talking to. I’m not a real date. I’m just his assistant. I’m off limits. Clearing his throat, he nods at the door. “Shall we?”
I nod once, not trusting myself to speak. I feel like a princess, but I’m one that will be leaving the ball on my own. Even though Nathan is by my side, he’s not mine for the keeping.
As long as I remember that, I can enjoy tonight. I just need to make sure I don’t get too swept away in the fantasy of it all.
The car takes us to a famous event space by Columbus Circle, where there are ropes and security galore. Lights flash from the photographers on the sidelines, and onlookers gather on the sidewalk, like they’re hoping to catch a glimpse of someone in particular.
And then I see who they’re looking for. It’s not just one person, but multiple.
There’s Sloane Hawthorn, the movie star. And Reggie Thompson, the senator. Then a model whose name I can’t remember, and a businessman who I’ve definitely seen on the cover of Forbes. There are more, all dressed in their finest and strutting down the red carpet.
I feel like a fish out of water, but Nathan smiles at me reassuringly. He steps out of the car first, holding out his hand for me to take. I glance at it for a moment, hesitating, before placing my hand in his. It’s warm and strong, and I can’t help but feel a little bit giddy.
Cameras flash and people shout out greetings as we make our way down the carpet. Nathan’s name is called out a few times, and I realize that he’s just as famous as some of the people we’re mingling with.
You would think I’d know this, but as his assistant much of my work is done behind my desk. He’s only taken me to a few events with him before. Usually, I’m back at the office making the phone calls to set up all the details.
Together, we make our way through the ropes and up to the entrance, where we’re greeted by a team of photographers and reporters. Nathan’s face is all smiles, while I’m trying my best not to look like a deer in headlights.
I can feel the eyes of everyone on us, and even though I’m used to being invisible, tonight I feel like the star of the show.
“Nathan!” one of the photographers calls out. “Who is your date tonight?”
Heat floods my face. Nathan ignores the question, but does place his hand on my lower back as he smiles for the pictures.
His touch is like electricity, running through my body and making me feel alive. For a moment, I forget that I’m just his assistant and not his real date.
As the camera flashes continue to illuminate the night, I find myself swept away by the surreal atmosphere. Nathan’s touch on my lower back feels both comforting and thrilling, grounding me amidst the sea of unfamiliar faces.
I try to steady my breathing as we finally make our way up the steps to the extravagant venue. As soon as we’re inside, I’m met with a sea of beautiful people, all dressed in their fanciest attire. I’m suddenly very aware of my own plainness, despite the dress and hair and makeup.
The inside of the event space is as luxurious as I’d imagined. Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling, casting a warm glow over the room. There are waiters carrying trays of champagne and hors d’oeuvres, and a stage at the far end of the room where a band plays.
I can’t help but be entranced by the opulence surrounding me, feeling like an imposter in this world of glamour and sophistication.
“I don’t know if I’m ready for this,” I whisper, feeling intimidated by the sheer amount of wealth and power in the room.
Nathan puts a hand on my arm, giving me a reassuring squeeze. “You’ll be fine. Just stick with me and we’ll get through it together.”
His voice is calm and soothing, easing the nerves that have consumed me. I take a deep breath, allowing his touch and words to ground me in this overwhelming atmosphere. With Nathan by my side, I feel a surge of confidence coursing through my veins.
As we navigate through the sea of glamorous attendees, whispers follow us like a soft breeze. I catch snippets of conversation, speculation about who I am and why I’m here with Nathan. Being his assistant, I’m used to being in the background, invisible. But tonight, under the glow of the chandeliers and in his presence, I feel like the protagonist of a story.
Nathan guides me through the crowd, greeting people left and right. I try to keep up, but it’s overwhelming.
As we enter the ballroom, I’m struck by how beautiful everything is. The ceiling is covered in glittering chandeliers, and the walls are adorned with golden wallpaper. There are people everywhere, drinking champagne and laughing.
Nathan leads me to a table, and as we sit down, someone comes over to take our drink orders.
“This is amazing,” I say, still looking around in awe. The opulence of the room is even further enhanced by the exquisite floral arrangements and the soft music coming from the orchestra.
Nathan smiles, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “I’m glad. Thank you for coming with me tonight.”
I blush, feeling a flutter in my stomach. “I should be thanking you. This is wonderful.”
He reaches across the table to take my hand in his. “You deserve it, you know. You’re an amazing assistant and an even more amazing person.”
I can feel my heart beating faster as he stares at me. I know we’re not a couple, and he might just be touching me for show, but I can’t stop myself from leaning towards him.
Our eyes lock, and for a moment, time stands still. The noise of the bustling ballroom fades into a distant hum, and all I can focus on is the warmth of his hand against mine, radiating a sense of security that I’ve never felt before.
The moment is broken by the sound of someone clearing their throat. We both turn to see a man standing at the end of the table, a wide grin on his face.
“Nathan, my old friend!” he exclaims, extending his hand. “It’s so good to see you again.”
Nathan stands up, offering his hand in return. “Likewise, Jack. How have you been?”
“Good, good.” Jack’s gaze strays to me. “I don’t believe we’ve met…”
“This is Maria.” Nathan’s voice is off, his body language stiff. I’ve worked with him long enough to read him in social situations. He’s not the biggest fan of whoever this Jack is.
“I heard your building has been approved.” Jack smiles at Nathan, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “For now.”
Nathan’s jaw tightens, but he maintains a polite smile. “Yes. We’re very excited about it.”
“Well, I’m sure you are.” Jack’s eyes flicker over to me again, and I can sense something predatory in his gaze. “You’re a lucky man, Nathan. Maria is quite a catch.”
I can feel myself flush with embarrassment.
“Yes, she is,” Nathan clips, his gaze steady on Jack.
“Well.” Jack sips his drink. “I suppose I should make the rounds. See if there is anyone here worth talking to.”
He leaves without a goodbye, and Nathan is frowning as he sits down.
“Jack…” I trail off.
“Finn.”
“Ah.” The recognition finally turns on. Jack Finn, another real estate mogul in the city. And one of Nathan’s biggest rivals.
Nathan takes a sip of his champagne, his eyes still dark with anger. “He’s a shark. And he’s always been a bit too interested in my personal life.”
I can feel the tension between us, and I don’t know what to say. Nathan is my boss, and I should leave him to his own business, but I hate seeing him upset.
“He’s not worth it,” I finally say. “You’re already on top. I’ve seen the numbers, Nathan. He’s no threat to you.”
His eyes light up. “Finally. I was wondering when you would get comfortable using my first name. And thank you. You always know how to make me feel better.”
There’s a flutter in my stomach, and I quickly avert my eyes. I catch a glimpse of Sloane Hawthorn, standing with a crowd around her, and I feel as if I’ve come down to earth with a bump. She’s stunningly beautiful, and seeing her up close is all it takes to remind me that I’m a fraud.
I’m not a glamorous swan like her. I’m a frumpy assistant playing dress-up.
“Would you like to meet her?” Nathan suddenly asks.
“What?” I feel my eyes get big as I turn to look at him.
“Sloane,” he clarifies. “Would you like to meet her?”
“Oh.” I laugh nervously, feeling foolish. “No, that’s okay. I don’t want to bother her.”
Nathan gives me a curious look, and I can feel myself getting even more self-conscious. “I mean, I’m sure she’s busy. And I don’t really have anything to say to her.”
“Maria.” Nathan’s voice is firm, and I look up at him. “You’re a wonderful person, and you’re just as important as anyone else here.”
It’s like he’s looked right into my soul and seen what’s bothering me. Usually, I would be compelled to turn away, but shock at his awareness has me staring back at him.
Before I can look away, he reaches across the table and takes my hand. “Trust me,” he says softly, his eyes locked on mine. “You have nothing to be ashamed of.”
“Okay,” I finally say, trying to focus on the matter at hand. “If you think it’s a good idea, I’ll do it.”
Nathan smiles. “Great. Let’s go.”
He stands up and offers me his arm, and I take it hesitantly. We make our way through the crowd, and I can feel all eyes on us as we approach Sloane’s group. My nerves are getting the better of me, and I’m not sure I can go through with it.
But Nathan is beside me, his presence calming me down.
Sloane turns to us, a dazzling smile on her lips. “Nathan, so good to see you. And who is this lovely young lady?”
“This is Maria.” Nathan steps back, giving me and Sloane space.
Sloane’s eyes flicker over me, assessing me. “Nice to meet you, Maria,” she says, extending a hand.
“Likewise,” I shake her hand awkwardly. “I loved you in Project Break.”
She flashes me a genuine smile, and the last of my nerves melt away. “Thank you so much,” she says. “It was a challenging role to take on, but I’m glad people enjoyed it.”
“I did more than enjoy it,” I say, blurting out the words before I can stop myself. “I was obsessed with it. I must have watched it at least ten times.”
Sloane laughs, and I can’t help but join in. “That’s amazing to hear. It’s always nice to know that your work is appreciated.”
Sloane’s laughter is infectious, and I find myself feeling more at ease around her. She’s not the aloof and unapproachable star I’d imagined her to be, but rather warm and personable.
Nathan introduces us to the rest of her group, including a few other actors and some industry executives. I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the names and titles being thrown around, but everyone is friendly and welcoming.
It’s not until a woman walks onto the stage that the conversation dies down. “Welcome everyone!” She raises her hands. “And thank you for coming here tonight. I could talk your ear off, but I think I’ll let the man who is responsible for tonight do that instead. It is my great honor to introduce Nathan Colton.”
The room bursts into applause, and Nathan makes his way to the stage. I clap as loud as I can, enjoying being swept away in the excitement.
Nathan takes the microphone and the room quiets down. “Thank you all for coming out tonight. This organization is near and dear to my heart, and I know that all of you are here because you also believe that we have the ability to change the world. So, let’s dig deep and make a real difference.”
The crowd cheers loudly, and Nathan flashes a smile. “But enough with the speeches. Let’s start the auction!”
Sloane and her group move closer to the stage, and I follow them, eager to see what’s going to happen. Nathan starts off with a signed guitar from a famous musician, and the bidding starts off slow.
But then, Sloane turns to me and whispers, “Watch this.”
She raises her hand and starts bidding, and soon a bidding war breaks out between Sloane and an older man in a suit. The price keeps going up and up until Sloane finally wins with a bid of twenty thousand.
As the auction continues, I feel a bit intimidated by the amount of money being thrown around. But Sloane seems completely at ease, laughing and joking with the other bidders as they compete for various items. It’s clear that she has a lot of experience with events like this, and I find myself admiring her confidence and poise.
Almost too soon, the auction is over. I was actually enjoying watching the bidding war, even though I never could have bid on anything myself.
But then Nathan is leaving the stage and walking right back to me, and I have to work to not smile too big.
“You were great,” I tell him.
He ducks his head and grins. It’s an oddly shy moment from such a confident man, and it leaves me wondering what parts of him I haven’t seen — and will never see.
Someone comes up to Sloane, and she turns to me before getting involved in the conversation. “It was good to meet you, Maria.”
“You too.” I watch as she gets pulled into yet another circle of adoring people.
“Are you having a good time?” Nathan asks me.
“The best. Thank you for introducing me to Sloane.”
“My pleasure. She’s quite the force to be reckoned with,” Nathan chuckles. “But don’t let her intimidate you. We all started somewhere, you know.”
The band switches to another song, this one slower and more romantic than anything they’ve played yet. Nathan offers me his hand, a softness in his eyes. “May I have this dance?”
I hesitate.
Yes, of course I want to dance with him. But I don’t want to get too carried away. The more I indulge in this crush, the harder it will be when we return to the real world.
But he’s my boss, and I’m here tonight to play the role of his date. A part like that involves dancing. And so I slip my hand into his. “Yes.”
He draws me onto the dance floor, where other couples sway and twirl. Everywhere he touches me lights up like a Christmas tree, and I start to doubt my ability to stand up straight.
Nathan draws me closer to him, and his body heat envelops me. All I need to do is let go of the last tiny bit of resistance, and I would melt right into him.
This moment is too perfect. This night is too magical. Soon enough, it will all evaporate into thin air, and I know that. For now, though, I intend on savoring every second of it.
