CHAPTER 8

Controlled conditions mattered.

No visible blood. No shouting. No unnecessary men. A table bolted to the floor, two chairs, a recording system maintained by the Commission rather than either organization. Violence remained available, which made performance unnecessary.

The attacker called himself Daniel Price.

His fingerprints belonged to a warehouse contractor who had vanished eight months earlier. The Volkov token registered to Yuri Antonov had opened two gates during the convoy attack and a pharmaceutical loading zone three weeks earlier.

Price looked at Nikolai's bandaged shoulder and smiled.

"Your wife did better than the route sheet predicted."

"She is not my wife."

"Not yet."

Nikolai did not ask who had told him. Information offered too easily usually concealed the path that mattered.

Caterina watched through the observation glass with Daria and Camille. Nikolai could feel her attention as distinctly as another weapon in the room.

"Who supplied the token?" he asked.

Price leaned back. "Paper envelope."

"Location."

"Different each time."

"Payment."

"Preservation consulting."

"Company."

"Orison. Sometimes Grayhaven. Sometimes a church foundation that probably never saw a church."

Cross-linked preservation companies.

"Instructions?"

"Printed. Burn after reading."

"Who verifies completion?"

"Account posts a one-dollar transfer. Then the rest clears."

"Which account?"

Price recited a sequence routed through three digital wallets and a Luxembourg intermediary. Cyberfinance would follow it. The architecture was designed to be found in fragments - enough to blame, never enough to understand.

"Who ordered Caterina separated from me?" Nikolai asked.

Price's smile returned. "The route sheet called her Queen Asset."

Nikolai's body did not move.

Inside, something precise and violent changed direction.

He had read men who threatened family. Most wanted reaction because reaction proved value. Price watched for it now.

Nikolai gave him none.

"You were told to preserve her alive."

"Preferred."

"And me?"

"Alive if separated. Dead if not."

Not murder for its own sake.

Widow creation. Succession fracture. A marriage proposal transformed into evidence of betrayal.

"Commander?"

"Never met him."

"Voice?"

"No calls."

"Paper source?"

"A printer leaves habits. You people know that."

Nikolai did. So did Caterina.

He asked for the exact envelope stock, fold pattern, ink behavior, staple placement, and delivery intervals. Price answered because operational details felt harmless to men accustomed to hiding behind names they did not know.

By the end of forty minutes, Nikolai had a map of six dead drops, four payment paths, and two preservation companies tied to refrigerated cargo losses.

No Galina.

No Nerovelli insider.

No direct Meridian order.

Enough to prove a network.

Not enough to stop it.

He left Price under neutral custody and entered the observation room.

Caterina stood beside the glass in a dark green suit, one hand resting lightly against the bruised side she believed no one noticed.

Nikolai noticed.

"Imaging," he said.

"Completed. No fracture."

He looked at Camille.

Camille said, "She authorized me to confirm that much."

A boundary delivered before he could cross it.

Good.

Irritating.

Necessary.

Daria placed the dead-drop map on the table. "Two sites are in Volkov territory. Two in Black Harbor. One on municipal land. One at the old Saint Orsino freight chapel."

Caterina's expression changed at the chapel name.

"Marco was injured there during Paolo's vehicle fire," she said. "The site touches Book Five evidence custody."

"Could the attacker be referencing known history?" Daria asked.

"Possibly. Or the dead drop predates the murder. We do not assign meaning yet."

Nikolai looked at Caterina. She separated emotional relevance from evidence without denying either.

Again, competence.

Again, the dangerous pull of it.

"You will move to a Volkov residence tonight," he said.

The room became still.

Caterina turned fully toward him. "No."

"The island route is compromised. Crown House may be compromised. A Volkov residence gives us a controlled perimeter."

"Controlled by you."

"Controlled by security I can verify."

"The attack used a Volkov token."

"A dead man's token."

"Which passed your gates."

"Because someone compromised the system. That does not make every physical location equal."

"Correct. It makes exclusive control unacceptable."

Nikolai felt fear take the shape it always took inside him: routes, vehicles, locks, layers, men whose loyalty had been tested.

He could place Caterina inside the Volkov river residence within an hour.

He could seal the access road, rotate guards, isolate communications, and reduce the available attack surface by seventy percent.

He could keep her alive.

He could also violate the language she had spent two days forcing him to understand.

"Alternative," she said.

He waited.

"The commandant's residence. East side of Breakwater Island. Restored but not currently occupied. Separate entrances, separate security chains, Commission-controlled utility core. We establish written joint command and independent communications."

"The island is penetrated."

"The Commission hall was penetrated through maintenance access and network injection. The residence has a mechanical security layer Valentina reviewed last year."

"You knew that?"

"I asked."

"Before the convoy attack."

"Preparation is not exclusively male."

He ignored the edge in the sentence because he had earned it.

Daria opened the building file. "The residence can be secured within three hours. Two bedroom suites, central operations room, independent generator, sea access, tunnel access sealed since restoration."

"Separate teams," Caterina said. "No team enters the other's private wing without visible lethal threat or direct invitation. Joint route changes. Joint visitor approval. No internal surveillance of bedrooms or counsel rooms."

"Common corridors monitored," Nikolai said.

"By the Commission, with both teams receiving the same feed."

"Medical files available to emergency personnel."

"Emergency summary only. Full records remain private."

"Armored vehicle assigned to each entrance."

"And neither vehicle may be disabled by the other's security."

The negotiation accelerated.

Not soft. Not friendly.

Intimate in a way Nikolai had not expected intimacy to become.

Each clause revealed where the other anticipated betrayal.

Each concession exposed the fear beneath preference.

By the time Daria drafted the provisional residence order, Nikolai knew Caterina slept with no staff inside her private rooms, kept paper copies of every route, and refused security systems that required biometric ownership by another person.

She knew he demanded two exits from any sleeping space, prohibited unsecured windows above accessible roofs, and placed medical equipment where he could reach it without calling for help.

Neither commented on what the details revealed.

Daria placed the order before them.

Nikolai signed.

Caterina signed beside him.

"I will occupy the east suite," she said.

"West has the stronger sea exit."

"Then you take west. You are the one who inventories exits as emotional support."

His mouth almost moved.

"Proximity," Caterina continued, gathering her papers, "is not acceptance of marriage."

"You have said that before."

"You require repetition where authority is concerned."

She walked toward the door.

Nikolai looked through the observation glass at Price, the man who had called her Queen Asset and believed the phrase would provoke possession.

Possession was simple.

It required only force and the willingness to rename it.

What Caterina demanded was more dangerous.

She wanted him near enough to protect her and disciplined enough not to convert nearness into ownership.

Nikolai followed her from the holding room toward the residence they would share under written command.

For the first time, he understood that the marriage proposal had not created forced proximity.

Her refusal to be absorbed had.
