Chapter 41
The intrusive and loud knock on the door pulled me awake. At first, I had been determined to ignore it, but when eventually it was accompanied by quite rude and harsh words, Evelyn got up.
“What the fuck,” she started to curse as she reached for her phone, and then I watched as her eyes widened.
“Holy shit!” she cursed. “It”s 10 am.”
This still seemed pretty early to me, given that this was a vacation week, so when she tried to jump out of bed, I held her back.
“Just a little while longer,” I said; however, she refused and continued to fight. She giggled, however, since I still refused to let her budge even while she tickled me, and suddenly, as though in response to her amusement, we definitely heard from the outside someone kick the door open and barge in.
From my waist down I was covered underneath the blanket, so there was no cause for alarm, but Evelyn, on the other hand, had to quickly grab the sheets to cover her breasts.
At her alarm, I turned around then in bloody annoyance to see whom had the audacity and unsurprisingly saw that it was Victoria. She seemed incredibly startled though as though this was not a scene she had been expecting in any way. She stared at both of us, and then I, immediately began to get up, her eyes widened in shock.
“Um... I”m sorry, Sir,” she said with a strained smile. “I-I just wanted to tell her about the planned photoshoot. The photographer has arrived, and Aurora has been calling for you for the past hour. We’re already running behind schedule.”
“You”re still talking?” I asked, and it took her a moment to process my words. Afterward, she turned around and sped from the bedroom. Thankfully, she closed the door behind her, which gave me some more alone time with Evelyn.
“I need to go,” she said as she hurriedly stood up and then headed toward the lounge area from the previous night to retrieve her clothes.
“Fuck, so late.”
She started hurrying toward the bathroom; however, just before she could go too far, I reached forward and caught her.
“I”m late, Drake,” she said. “We overslept. I”m in huge fucking trouble.”
“I”m the boss,” I told her. “You”re not in any trouble. You”re fine.”
“Actually, Aurora is my boss, and right now she needs me and I”m not there. This was one of the things I was scared of. I have to go, now.”
I listened to her words, and even though I didn”t necessarily agree with her haste, I understood where her loyalty was. It was one of the things that had immensely drawn her to me, but now it was keeping me from her.
“Alright,” I replied. “I need to get ready as well, plus I left my phone in my room. I can only imagine the fires waiting for me to put them out.”
She smiled then, and I tilted my head as I watched her.
“We don”t have any time to take a shower together?” I asked, wanting to milk every moment with her as much as I could.
“No,” she immediately refused. “This will lead to more sex, and guess who Aurora will be furious at?”
“The both of us?” I replied, and she gave me a dry look.
“I”m serious.”
“She”s already furious at you. I didn’t want to be labeled an enemy as well,” she said and tried to pull her hand free. I let her go, but not before placing a kiss on her hand.
I was startled though, just as she was when I did this because it was unnecessary. For what had to be the past twelve hours, I had kissed her on and in nearly every single part of her body, and yet I couldn’t just let her go now to get ready for her day without this little one?
She felt just how special and intimate it was because she looked at me then and a long silence passed between us. Without a word, she continued on to the bathroom, and I really began to wonder if I was as unaffected as I thought I was.
I had had more casual relationships with women than I could count, and I had never been this way. For one, I had never spent a night with them and remained reluctant to leave till the morning.
If we weren’t being interrupted now, if I could, I would spend the entire day in bed with her. Talking and eating and fucking. Sleeping and then waiting to do it all over again.
Currently, as I thought about this, excitement filled me, and I wanted to burst but I felt some dread as well. This was far from normal, and I truly didn”t want to restrict myself from enjoying it all.
Plus, I wondered as I found my clothes and began to put them on. What was so bad about being with her even after this week was over? She was breathtaking, loyal, hardworking, driven. What would be wrong in taking this even further?
I couldn’t see a problem whatsoever, and so with one last look at the bathroom, I decided to open my mind toward it. I was in the best of moods, even after I returned to my room and found my phone still blowing up with missed calls and messages, I patiently sat down to eat my breakfast and started responding to them. Only a few seconds in, however, and my heart lurched.
Most of them I realized now had been from my father and mother, and I wondered why. They had called, sent urgent messages asking where I was. Surely, they weren’t worried about my location, so all I could think of as to why they would have urgently needed me was one thing.
Immediately, I put the coffee I had been sipping aside and rushed out of the room. In no time, I was knocking on their door, however, it took a while for them to answer. I was so terrified I found myself shaking. If anything had happened, I knew that they would remain silent until I came over for Aurora”s sake so that we could calmly decide on what to do. So, as I grew impatient with the locked door and barged in, I prepared myself for the worst.
It was just as expected. I headed in and found my mom in bed covered with the blanket. My dad was by her side, and he had her hand in his. She looked so weak and ill. During the day and with color and her outfits, she had managed so far to not look so different, at least to those not looking too closely.
But now she seems so pale, lifeless, and weak. At this moment, I could truly see the illness eating away at her.
“What happened?” I asked as I headed over to her side.
“Where the hell were you?” my dad asked, and I could tell just how upset he was from the tone of his voice and sternness in his tone. I knew that he was scared, worried, and possibly helpless.
“We wanted to call a helicopter last night, but we couldn’t. We couldn’t reach you, and we didn’t want to alert Aurora either.”
I looked at my mother, and she shook her head.
“Unnecessary,” she said. “I just started having difficulties breathing earlier this morning. Not last night. He was worried and wanted to raise the alarm, but I stopped him. I wouldn’t have waited this long before contacting you, and if we had overreacted, Aurora would have found out.”
“Overreacted?” he asked, his tone rising.
“Darryl,” she called softly, trying to calm him, but he grew even angrier.
“I understand that we’re trying to be considerate of Aurora. That we want her to be happy during this period, but that”s not all that”s important. We also have to take care of your mother as well.”
My mother sighed, while I stared between the two of them. I headed to the couch to take my seat. Truly, at times like this, I wish I could rewind time. Currently, I”d take the past few hours over this. From feeling so relaxed and happy, I was tense and scared all over again. I kept a straight face and began to corral my thoughts, but my insides were in turmoil.
“Can you hold on for the next hour?” I asked. “I”ll send for Dr. Harold immediately.”
“We”ve already spoken to him,” my father replied. “He”s on his way.”
“So no need for a helicopter?”
“Absolutely not. I”m fine,” my mother replied. “But what I need you to do is to ensure that Aurora is occupied with her shoot on the golf course. The other guests as well. In this way, she won”t notice we”re gone or that we’ve not arrived yet until later.”
I stared at them, understanding, and then I nodded.
“I”ll do my best to keep her busy.”
